Internal Slave Blew Up

This was a long day. I've got a 3 hour drive from my guard weekend when 6 miles away from home at a busy intersection my clutch doesn't disengage. Usually can be fixed by double clutching, but everytime I pressed the pedal it just had less and less resistance. I knew exactly what happened, my internal slave decided to take a piss and I lost hydraulic pressure. Good thing she was in neutral. The good news? I've got an ax15, t-case, clutch, pre-bled external slave system and almost everything else for a swap back in my garage. I just need a mount bracket and an axle. The bad? I need that damn mount bracket, and it took AAA almost 3 hours to get there. 220,000 miles and this is her first major break down, and it's not even her fault. The negligent PO didn't replace the slave system when he replaced the clutch, for all I know it probably had 220,000 miles on it, too.

So, any annoying instances like this you'd all like to share?

with some practice you can learn how to drive an MJ around without the clutch. :D

  I did it for 3 months.....It is only those dead stick starts from the red lights that were hard....... :rock on:

Is it the crossmember you need or the AX-15 specific trans mount? Will a later model auto trans cross member work or is it specific to the AX-15?

The pukey and aw4 crossmembers all work with a t-case drop kit, it's just the mounting bracket that's needed. I actually did find a website that sells them, but at almost $100, it's tough to shovel that much over for a piece of bent metal, haha.

My old man was telling me about that, had to do that with one of his old VW bugs. A skill I'd like to learn, haha.

Driving without a clutch is just as easy as with a clutch. I learned it in about 3 city blocks, only use the clutch anymore to take off from a dead stop, and reverse. Helps that I pretty much only drive backroads with 1 or 2 stops too.

All youre doing when you shift without the clutch is using engine rpms to make the gear you want "mesh up". When youre driving just take some time to figure out at what speeds and rpms your gears line up at, and bam. Clutchless driving.

Even so, I figure I was still dead in the water since I was at a dead stop on a flat surface. Unless I shut the engine off, put it in first and let the starter push me forward, which I'm sure would do more harm than good. But, something to try once I replace the slave system.

That is exactly how it is done....mine lived through the 3 months and still has the same starter....still going strong

Really? I had no idea those starters could take that kind of abuse, that's good to know! Hell of alot of torque out of that little motor.

  • 2 weeks later...

I am sure you have checked but mine stopped working one day when i forgot to top off the clutch fluid (I have a slow leak) and I grabbed a bubble of air. Once bleed it can fine.

I had pumped it several times, so when I checked it was empty. Once I got it home, I refilled it and pumped again to find the bottom of my bell housing pouring out brake fluid, which confirmed my internal slave went boom.
