87 Mj "farm Find" Ressurection

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the Forum, so here's my 1st post. Found an 87 4.0 4x LB auto with a topper on CL. It was listed under Cadillacs. Sitting on a farm it was abandoned for at least 12 years. Had 2 flats, stone dead battery and covered in grease and mud. Got it for 1/2 asking price and towed her home. What a rat! BUT... there be a gem underneath. To be continued....

Yeah, I'm a glutton for punishment. There are actually 4. First one is an 86 2x LB 2.5L auto bought new in Oct. of 1985. Only option was an AM radio. Sticker was $6195.00 +/-. It has seen 2 accidents, 1 OEM color re-paint ( that crappy half yellow half brown tan AMC offered ) and them a color change to Plum Crazy/Purple that lasted about 6 years. She is now black and old skool resurrected with 147000 miles and the iron horse is still running strong. If I ever figure out how to post pics on this Forum I will post 'em all including the 88 Olympic that some brothers are scoffing at. You will drool, ya bastid!

Got the Farmer up off the ground yesterday and put 4 matching tires and wheels on that I had laying in the barn. Now at least it will roll. Tried charging up the ancient Sears Weatherbeater battery but no real success. Too far gone. Ran over to Wal-mart with the dead Sears bat and picked up a replacement @ 84.00 - 9.00 core credit plus the Governors share. New juicer in place, the Farmer actually started, stale gas and all. Lifters were a little clacky till the antique oil got circulating and a little heat built up. Slapped her in Drive and it moved! Got all gears. Will wonders never cease. Got to the back of the property and Wham! It just shuts down. I started her back up and it ran for about 10 seconds and shut down again. After hobbling back to the barn for a chain and a tractor I towed it back. It seems to run fine after it cools down. Once it starts to get to operating temp it shuts off. My neighbor says its probably a crank sensor? Gotta do some research on this one. I never had this happen to any of my MJ's before.

What is the "right way" to take it? I make my living selling pencils and apples on the corner in my home town. When I get a jug full o' quarters, I buy another MJ. What a putz! Glued the mirror tab back on Farmers windshield today. Boy do I feel productive. Let me run out and take a pic of that real quick to keep my new buddy amused.....

I don't know, I thought I took it pretty well. I can take a poke in the ribs as well as the next guy. Guess my reply must have come across as harsh to you fellas but that's fairly mild as it goes in Jersey (Soprano State & all that). If I could see ya face to face, I'd just give ya the Manson lamps and laugh like a hyena. Gotta go now. The kid down the street that's been sitting on a nice 87 4.0 5 speed with a 2.5" lift has finally called and is ready to sell. Gonna take a jug o' quarters and my $69.00 tow bar and try to steal it. (This MJ was MINE 8 years ago. Sold it when I was hard up for cash for $2500.00 to some dude from Delaware. How it got back into my own back yard should be a good story to hear.) ]8{)>

People are @#$%ing crazy now a days the prices that they are trying to sell used cars damn at dealer and private seller. If have been look for a used Unlimited Wrangler Rubicon you would not believe the prices :fs1:Ā  :nuts:Ā  :rant:Ā  :soap box:Ā  :fs2:Ā  :mad:Ā  :no:Ā  :wall:Ā  :headpop:Ā Ā

I'm with you there, brother. I have paid less for a house than they are trying to sell a new truck for. It turns into a vicious circle - if a dealer wants 55000.00 for a new pickup, then everybody thinks 20,000.00 for a used POS is s bargain! Count me out. There are plenty o' cheap gems out there. Just be patient and keep poking around. You will find it!

Nah, not crazy OR stupid, just hornswaggled. This day and age the newbys coming up by far have had it pounded into their heads that the only way to get a bad @$$ Jeep is to buy the plastic and al-loo-min-ium toys the factory churns out. And you gotta have a big expensive warranty because if it breaks we (the factory) are the only ones that can fix it. The kids don't realize that for 35,000 dollars they could learn to build their own ride, like it better and get a sense of satisfaction from it. 8 times over. But no, we'll keep our skulls pointed at a stupid @$$ video game or walking around with our pants down around our knees. Ooops! I just fell off my soap box. While I'm down here I guess I'll check my tie rod ends....
