Well as a small update the fuel pump which was working before I pulled the tank/ bed no longer works. I tested the pump with it out of the truck altogether and no life.

I went looking for a photo of a behind the cab fiberglass storage area that I seen once in the back of a fullsize truck back maybe 7-10 years ago. This truck reminds me 100% of that storage only area tied in to the cab and molded in. I know this might be worthless without that picture but I would hope someone else has seen something the same as what I am saying.

I now see the errors of my ways as well as the previous owners. It would seem that he removed the fuel pump to tank o-ring. There is also a zip tie holding the remainder of the fuel level arm all the way up.I do see that the pump is removable with the bed in place.

I had noticed the distinct odor of fuel in and around the truck at which point I started looking for the cause of the odor.... I found out the previous owner had somehow almost removed the pump from the tank with the bed still firmly attached. The retaining rin and the top plate of the pump are hanging over the edge of the top side of the tank. The connectors at the filter are also loose. I am still working on getting the bed off (waiting on a little assistance lifting it) so I can re-install the pump and see what else he may have fiddled with.

I will check all the vacuum lines. The "emission control" light is on. I don't know how to go about checking what would be causing that so Off to the search engine I go. The truck does seem to go down the road quite well, I took it on a short trip just to check it out. It would seem that it has a rather high gear in the rear axle.

At the time I posted that last night I hadnt had the truck running on its own to be able to smell the exhaust. I was getting good fuel at the rail after the pump had primed, just wasnt 100% on the pressure. Just as an update, I was able to get the truck to run on its own. No water or oil smell through the exhaust, a slight misfire which could be coming from one or both of the OEM injectors. Its rather hard to start and you have to give it a bit of throttle to get it to start. I am going to reset the timing after I figure out the proper procedure.

Purchased my 89 mj for a song not running..... The previous owner told me it was the injectors not working so I got it to start and run on starting fluid. I brought it home and I can hear the fuel pump priming when you first turn the key, and according to the noid light set all 6 injectors are getting signal. I installed 4 neon injectors due to an oversight on my part(bought 8 injectors but only 4 were right and I didn't check), and still have a no start condition. I am going to be renting a fuel pressure tester tomorrow to double check that it is maintaining while cranking, is there anything else I should look into? Thank you before hand for any insight you may offer.

Do tell please. I would love buckets in my comanche so I can run a center console of sorts. -
Looks like an awesome start... Might I ask what your plans are for the bedsides?

With the RWD Corolla being my primary love I have come across this story many times.... but I think this will fit your bill on the lowest odometer reading. H3RESQ. http://www.speedhunters.com/2011/08/Toyota_corolla_ae86_with_48_original_KMS_found_time_capsule_/ Two extremes in one thread... "can not compute"... haha. This is effing awesome. Nice.... Yup Yup....

...and then at the bottom of the ad it says "Pictures are a custom installation of a 99 Mercedes E-300 210 Diesel". Exactly.

They list the 5 cylinder engine in the description, yet the engine in the photos clearly has 6 runners for the intake.

Does anyone know the fate of that jeep?
-
It is too late I have already started tinkering with the truck doing some little things that I know will need to be done soon anyway, as well as spray bombing it od green.

I have wanted one since the first(and only) time I drove one when I was 14. Just the low range torque of the I6 and the 5 speed, when this one was posted up on my local craigslist fir $500 and ran with starter fluid I knew I had to have it so I sold the wheels to my project Corolla to fund the purchase of the Comanche. Thank you both for the welcome wishes.

Well I just picked up my first Jeep and it happens to be an 89 MJ 4.0 5spd 2wd. The injectors were all coated in JBWeld (i would assume to stop the injector leak) and not firing. I have used a noid light set and verified the signal was getting to them so I am going tro buy the upgraded units when I get paid. Either way I am new here just wanted to introduce myself. Names Brian and I am from a podunk town just outside Ft.benning GA /Columbus Ga. Edit: The vinyl down the side of the truck says "Sportruck"..... From what I have been able to find that is the "base" model?
