Side Molding Or No Side Molding - Need Your Help

Recommended Posts

I just picked up my MJ from the body shop.  They did a GREAT job.  However, they could not find the exact side molding from the factory.  They did not want to put back on the old stuff.  They can get some that is very close to the original, but before they order it they want me to decide: molding vs. no molding.  Some people suggest I should leave it off.  I am not sure.  I think it will protect from stray doors.

Molding

No Molding

I guess it all comes down to where you live and if you think its a necessity.  My '88 never had moldings and in all these 25years, I've only received on major ding from some clueless lady driving a '70 something LTD (six foot long doors).........  If this is your daily driver and people are disrespectful with others property at the local grocery store, put the molding on.....  I think it looks better without.  But if you had the black molding around the wheel openings like mine has, then I'd being leaning toward putting it back on. ...  Nice paint job by the way!

It is a DD.  As I said, I am leaning toward getting the molding.  The samples they had were for Chevy S10 and full size Chevy trucks.  From 20' away you could not tell the diff.

The pin stripping was done.  This picture was before that.

Your truck looks great! I like moldings and it helps to break up things IMO. I used the plain black moldings from a junkyard longbed wreck I found, then ran a strip of aftermarket 1/2" wide chrome half-round molding down the center, like some of the Eliminators and Laredos had. With all the chrome on your truck I think it would look good.

I personally like the molding because of the protection it adds. People around here do not care at all about others vehicles. My mom's 2011 Yaris got a door slammed into it somewhere she was at after only having it for a few months, very noticeable on a white vehicle. Last thing I want is someone doing that to my MJ along the bed or something.

I have a full set of factory chrome trim in my garage waiting for the day I have an MJ worth putting a fresh coat of paint on. Of course I gotta get the factory tape off the back first, and that stuff is really on there.

I have those moldings on my '88 XJ, which I bought new in 1988. I GUARANTEE that they do NOTHING to protect your doors from other people's carelessness. They do, however, trap dirt and moisture.

Leave 'em off.
