terrawombat
When Chryco went all electronic with their transmissions is when the quality went down the tubes.
a1500ram
Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the torque flight 8 a Mercedes transmission or is it a Mercedes design?
terrawombat
The Torque Flight 8 is based on a transmission designed and built by a German company called ZF Friedrichshafen. Mercedes hasn't used their transmissions for quite some time (like 30+ years), but a lot of other European automakers use them - typically higher end manufacturers like Audi, BMW, Porsche, Jaguar, Maserati, Rolls Royce and Range Rover. This is a great move for Chrysler since their modern, home-built transmissions are absolute garbage and are extremely unreliable.
JeepcoMJ
Nothin wrong with the 45rfe trans though And incommando, You have a good argument but I would still rather have the muscle car. A buddy of mine has a smart car with a hyabusa motor in it, wicked fast and would beat stock Ferrari. It is still ghey, and I would rather have the slower Ferrari than a smart car. terrawombat
Somehow the RFE line of transmissions were able to skirt under the blanket of awfulness that is Chryco transmissions. They must have either outsourced that design or had their senior engineering team work on it rather than the interns who came up with the RE lineup. jimoshel
I think we've hashed this over about long enough. Sh*t or get off the pot. I'm donating a MJ, garage space and labor. So who's coming up with the engine? :brows:
big66440
I love mopar but have to agree with you guys,I work for an engine rebuilding supply warehouse and we make tons of money on the 2.7 3.7 and 4.7 Chrysler engines (but we sell as much for ford 4.6 and 5.4 :P ) I hope the pentastar engines and newer tranny's had some serious engineering to keep them from further ruining Chryslers image as piles of junk. azdiesel
How about buying a Mopar wreck with a SRT-8 and put the whole works in a comanche. My brother is putting one of these drive trains into a 64 Satalite . Should be interesting! Regarding Mopar junk, My 98 Intrepid has 320k miles on it. Engine & trans have had regular maintenance/ oil changes and have never been apart for repairs. By the way, i drive the hell out of my vehilces! The materials all come from the same hole in the ground and the engineers more than likely worked for various different companies. So every car company is going to have good components and then some not so good. A 2.7 engine in an Intrepid (to me) is bad news. Mine is a 3.2 and it is probably the best car i have ever owned considering price, fuel mileage and component failures. An eco-boost Ford in a Comanche would also be a killer package! If you have never had a turbo engine, its the only way to fly in the mountians and still have some economy.
xjrev10
Bring this back from the dead. These engines are plentiful and are getting fairly cheap... Wiring is still a real issue but with everybody swapping them out for Hemis or Diesels, they are very available....
benjy_26
They may be available, but are they desirable? For my money, I'd rather shoehorn a GM LS based drivetrain into a MJ than the Pentastar.
johnj92131
...... I can't imagine what one would do in a 3000 lb Comanche! Hmmmm... my Comanche with a half a tank of fuel and two 160lb people weighs 4620. :hmm: My 91 long bed with the SnugTop and over 500 lbs of fat people weight = 3840 lbs after a dump run. Not sure how much fuel on board any more. You are 1000 pounds heavier than a fully factory optioned long bed???
88mjblue
I personally, never been a big fan of Chryco powertrains. I do, however, like me some XJ/MJ, ZJ and WJ's. Yes, the 242-I6 is super reliable, but was in existence before Chryco owned AMC/Jeep. My plan for both my XJ and MJ is GM LSx style engines. If I can make it happen, use the 6L80E, 6 spd trans as well. These GM engines are super reliable, plentuful, and powerful. Novak makes pretty much everything you need to drop in an go, from motor mounts, to headers/rad etc. Other than diesel, you will say to yourself "Could have had a V8" Agreed. If you want to put a "modern" engine in, then go with an LS (for all the reasons above). And the 3.6 will never come close to the legendary status of the AMC straight six. Someone tried to claim this earlier in this thread, but I'm not sure how/why/for what reasons they would say that? Sorry, but Chrysler products today are garbage. xjrev10
Some folks like to keep their Jeep, Jeep. I'd take a 3.6 in my MJ over an LS any day. Just to be different. I take it nobody has seen a swap in a MJ/XJ yet. I'm sure it's coming.
Swampy
Just cane across this thread because swapping a 3.6 into my mj. Maybe with a ripp supercharger? Its a hell of an idea and i like the way it sounds. Maybe after I graduate college I will look into it more
johnj92131
Check to see how wide that 3.6 is first. Then measure the MJ engine compartment width.
