Recommended Posts

Got it done :)  Been driving it for a few days looks good no leaks. Got that crappy Fram filter off and my new Bosch one put on too.
Here are some pics .SDc8DSG.jpg4Ocl9js.jpg

So were did you reroute ccv and pcv to??
Kinda hard to tell in pictures.
Found this on eBay with some help from another forum.

Polished it inside and out with mineral oil and emery-cloth. Thats your old VC Harley.
Cut out a gasket out of ABC1835 Cork / Rubber Rollpack

Where did you find an actual cork gasket at ?

Try out car-part.com it's a search for junkyards. I was able to snag an aluminum VC  for my 87 2.5L.  Came off a 95 YJ.  It seems to be a superior system at venting the crankcase gases.  Also, snag the felpro rubber gasket for a  98 2.5L Dodge Dakota instead of cork. Seems sturdier and I haven't had any leaks after replacing.  Part # is VS50502R. Looks like it's around $6 on rockauto right now.

Well started on replacing the plastic crap ola valve cover with aluminum valve cover today. Man at the oil cleaning to be done in engine compartment when I’m done.

Who’s brain storm idea at Chrysler was it to put a plastic valve cover and rubber gasket on .

Have new to me aluminum valve cover and old school cork gasket ready to go on in the am

New longer bolts, bushings and O rings (that was a surprise cost) 1/4” O rings .89¢ each. They were worn out so they get replaced also. Found bolts an bushings at Ace Hardware.

New bolt, bushing, O rings I came up with ....

All this will go together with the blue pro permatex not that brittle crap I cleaned off.

So hopefully by end of day tomorrow she will be back on the road and leak free. Weather permits I don’t have a garage to work out of, got a bit chilly after sunset tonight.

I’m retired from printing industry and we also used cork gaskets and the good permatex

On all kinds of printing presses, printing deck gear boxes, planetary gear box’s, machine heads , etc.

That brittle crap that was on it and plastic valve cover was a terrible combo.

But still got to get oil cleaned up after installation tomorrow.
I try to get a pic or two of the final product.

I recently just did the same upgrade, but I like your bolts, any chance you could share where you got them and what bushing and o rings you used? Thanks.

Hey Matt,
The bolts and bushings I got at Ace Hardware. Bolts are Grade 8 flange bolt 1/4”x 20 x 1”
a80992d3c8202e792a6bcd2fd46d6432.jpg

Plastic bushings are 1/2” x 1/4” with a collar around the top. I trimmed 3/16” off the length so they would be flush on bottom of valve cover when inserted.

Like I said in previous post O rings I got at Advanced auto.

3 of the bolt holes I honed out to use original stud top bolts for mounting heater hose looms and tubing bracket on back of valve cover.

Plastic VCs required shoulder bolts.

Plastic VCs where prone to warping and cracking........ie.........the need for shoulder bolts.

Cork gaskets split, leak...........ie...........the need for shoulder bolts.

Aluminum VCs do not use shoulder bolts or spacers or Orings.

Aluminum VCs require the blue Felpro gasket........that is if you don't want it to leak.

Studded bolts are available anywhere if you want to mount brackets.

If you do anything......grind down the nubs as I did, shown here, mates better with the Felpro, does not, will not, cannot leak.

Well got everything done and put back together and she’s running. Still have to clean oil off from old vc.

Now the question is where to plumb vc lines too ??

Old vc had 2 lines 1 pcv and

1 ccv that went too metal tubing around and under the throttle body.

New aluminum valve cover has brass port on side of front and 1 pcv elbow on back of valve cover.

1. I could plumb pvc and ccv together with a tee and run to pvc elbow and plug the front brass fitting ?

2. Where previous pcv was connect to brass port on front of vc and plumb back 1 previous ccv to the new pcv elbow ?

Any comments or suggestions welcomed will be doing that tomorrow.

Kind regards

The brass fitting has a 'metered' orifice, it is plumbed directly to the TB base. Use 3/16 brake line and vacuum connectors.

The vent tube to the rear goes directly to the air box or the carb hat.

Those spacers appear to be nylon, could be ABS but looks like nylon.

Nylon and ABS both have a melting point of 220 degrees, some nylons will melt at 250 degrees, but seeing that it came from ACE it is likely a low-end nylon.

Either way, neither will survive, even at 210 degrees they will distort, a spike of 220-230 and they are gone.

From your photo you have not a VC leak but oil saturation due to blow-by, extreme blow-by.

Swapping a VC will not solve blow-by, your engine is worn out. The excessive crank case pressure has to go somewhere, it carries oil with it, when everything in the engine compartment is covered with oil........this is what blow-by looks like.

Plumbing the tube to the air box will, in short order, saturate the air box.

Plumbing the tube to the carb hat will saturate the TB, including the injector.

Neither is good.

Thank you Jeep Driver

My motor is a long block with less than 30,000 miles on it. I did not have all the oil blow by until a tune up about a year ago. They changed vc gasket from a small leak around the back of vc. After that was done the blow back as appeared and gotten worse with time.
Vc came with brass orfice fitting. Just unsure where to route it too.
The plastic valve cover and gasket was replacement was a crappy job as the bolts were over tight , vc was cracked around every bolt hole, gasket and rtv they used was brittle when I took it of.

The areas circled is what I’m referring to. The one with arrow does run too air box thru the tb metal tubing under the tb. Hope this helps explain my problem solving better.

Best I could do in the dark.

Fyi all my fittings for it and coolant system I think I used old brass and copper pex fittings I had in a recyclable pile since all the local box stores were out of 90s etc only had that plastic garbage that always eventually breaks at the worst time in the worst places.

Top back hose on valve cover goes to front large pipe you have circled in your pic near the front of the engine bay on manifold. The side brass fitting goes to the back on opposite side.
