First Comanche

Recommended Posts

I just picked up an 87 Comanche 4wd and I want to put a 6in lift on it and put 35's or 37's on it. I was wondering what recommendations you guys would have about the lift kit to put on it. I feel redundant asking this because I'm pretty sure this has been asked a million times. So if anyone could offer any advice that would be awesome!

A soa in the back with new shocks would lift the rear around 6 to 6.5 inches. For the front you could run 4.5 inch lift coils and two inch spacers, or 6.5 inch lift coils. With new shocks of course. If you're running 35s or 37s, you'll most likely want to upgrade the rear axle if you have a dana 35. IMHO even a comanche dana 44 would be stressed pretty good with 37s. With 6 inches of lift you would also probably have to trim and bumpstop to eliminate rubbing.

First and most important question, how much money do you have to spend? serious question.

Just an FYI. Just the drivetrain swap I done was around 2 grand. Toss in 1200 for tires, lift, and all the other crap you will be looking at least 4 grand IMO..... Once again, ask me how I know.

Sweet jesus on iceskates!     2k just for the drivetrain??? Did you do any of the work yourself? What all did you swap out?

Also, there are NICE tires that can be had for less than 800 a set, (Treadwright.com) and if you do the 5.5 lift thats in the DIY section for 600 bones. . .

granted this is from my JY, but a complete engine is $200, transmission is $75, t-case is $70, axle is $40, driveshaft is $13.

add that all up

800

600

200

75

70

40

13

$1798, which is a helluva lot less than 4k

To be fair i would say a more accurate and "average" cost would be more like $2000, but we have no idea what the OP is staring out with. He may already have the 4.0, the 4x4, maybe even a Dana. If that be the case, he could have a killer rig just by getting some good ole craigslist tires and the DIY $600 lift. Total invested might even be less than a grand.

I've got a 9" and a D44 with Yukon chromolys under my Wrangler. It also has a broke outer and a busted Warn premium hub from my stock 4.0 on some 38's from a little escapade I got into over the weekend. If you're a fan of the skinny pedal like me, you're going to need to ditch that running gear altogether to play on 37's.

I couldnt find 33's for 800 dollars that were worth a crap much less 37's. Unless you are planning on buying used tires. Let me see if I can recall how much I have in mine.

8.25 with locker 4.56 gears  350

brake parts for 8.25   150

hardware mounting kit 125

up front.

new carrier 65.00

4.56 gears to match with install kit 250

spartan locker 300

gear/carrier shim kits 45.00

chromoly axle shafts 350

cover plate and axle seal  30

1665 is what I have in mine. that is not counting the 1000 labor as I am not a mechanic.

Toss in new U joints all around another 100. 200 or so for a adjustable trackbar and steering stabilizer, shocks, you don't want to skimp on shock another 300 and go ahead and figure another 200 on just random crap you are not expecting.

Mine was already lifted so I really don't know how much you are looking at for that if you piece it together say 600 as quoted above.

Now we are at 3065 with out labor. Toss in that 1000 for labor and we are at 4065.

I bought all new stuff and bought the "best" I could to my knowledge. I am sure there are lots of short cuts and you could shave some of this off. But this is just what CAN happen. I just done all of these upgrades just now.

Not trying to scare you just giving you a heads up of how expensive it can get really quickly.   Will be checking for pictures and progress buddy!

OHHHHH.... and don't forget those big meats you are wanting to run!!!!  It COULD quickly top 5 grand!!!

well to start is all your preference (there is no one answer) and what your going to want to spend and if your going to take your MJ off road..ect  you can buy lift parts and get your MJ lifted 6" by spending 4-6 hundred on a basic lift kit parts, you can buy a lift kit package for say 700-900 or long arm kit for 1300-2000. 35" tires and steel wheels will cost you 1200 to 2000 depending what you buy..37" more. as other have stated if you want a rig that will holdup and perform on and off road you will in time have to upgrade everything. so you will end up spending $3500.00 to say 5k depending on what you buy and if you do all the work.  get online read up do some research and start spending on what you like , its fun

I run a RC long arm, SOA,6.5" PORC springs, custom built steering ,custom built track bar, RC Hydro shocks, PitBull Rocker 35" radial tires on 10" steel wheels. to buy the stuff today to reproduce my lift and steering system (I do all my own work)  you would spend about 1500.00 that's just lift and steering. tires and wheels would run  1700.00 to 1800.

hope this info helps you

Set of 4 37" tires ship to my address, would run right at $1200, so. . . .  :dunno:   https://treadwright.com/p-81-37x12-50r16-5-guard-dog-m-t.aspx

I will gracefully bow out from this conversation now, as i have already made my case. My advice to the OP would be to do as much of the work yourself.  And shop around as much as you can.

37's are aggressive for any smaller Jeep running stock axles. My ZJ with built 44's was safely running 35's as the benefits of 37's did not outweigh the risks. Are you going for bragging rights or functionality? Keep in mind I am asking this totally unbiased as it is your rig, yada yada. Sticking to 35's can be accomplished with a bit of work and depending on your driving style, that size tire will not overly stress components. If you are going for functionality 35's are your best bet if those two tire choices are the top of the top. Coming from someone who has run both over the years, I would go 35's every chance over the 37's
