johnr Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 i have an 87 mj with a 2.5 liter. the alt just died so i would like to up grade with something that has more amp output. what options do i have?
jimoshel Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 '87 MJ uses a Delco Remy, think GM, alternator. Delco Remy alternators are available in just about any configuration and output you can imagine. Hit the JY and start looking, or ask the parts guy at the local auto parts store.
comanchedude Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 ACDELCO Part # 3342417 {#19135975} Remanufactured; 105 Amp GENERATOR w/A/C; DELCO CS130 105 AMPS i have an 87 mj with a 2.5 liter. the alt just died so i would like to up grade with something that has more amp output. what options do i have?

tmaxx411 Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 bumping a dead post. i need an alt for my 2.5. will that 136 amp be a bolt in? also, are the non AC and AC alternators the same? thanks
Jeep Driver Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 105 amp from '85 Caprice will fit fine. Note: you will need to reclock and drill a hole in your bracket as seen in pic. Not a big deal. Image Not Found
tmaxx411 Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 just to be 100%, that will fit a 2.5 without ac?
Jeep Driver Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I think the only difference is output........not size and shape. The Caprice is off the shelf, if you need one now.......go get it. If you want a 200 amp or some other........order and wait. I did what I did because I wanted.......needed........one that day and needed a higher amp than the 70amp that is stock.
Jeep Driver Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Let me clarify.... I believe there are other larger (size) GM alts..........the Caprice was the same physical size as the OEM........same plugs.....etc.....
Strokermjcomanche Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I had a 70 amp alt on my 88 with a 4.0 I put the optional 90 amp on with no mods whatsoever
Jeep Driver Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I had a 70 amp alt on my 88 with a 4.0 I put the optional 90 amp on with no mods whatsoever He's got a 2.5 I don't recall what the issue was for me.......higher amp for 2.5 was special order or twice the cost or some $#!&.........
Zebvance Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I am about to order a 160 amp from dbelectrical.com. Go check them out.
Strokermjcomanche Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 The pic you posted looks like my alternator ( it's a delco remy ) and if I recall at the parts store I worked it's like 20 bucks more and they had it in stock
johnr Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 m parts guy was able to find the 105 alt that was a direct fit to the factory one with no mods
