My First Mj.... What To Do What To Do

Recommended Posts

1989 MJ out of Hawaii. Stickers and paint are getting sanded down and hit with a thin layer of liner. I have to figure out what the PO did to it. The blocks in the back bother me but the'll do for now. The rear end is either welded or equipped with a spool. It has to go. 5 speed 119k miles with a later model XJ manual transmission.

Just cleaned up the interior today. Pulled the seat And started to hit it with some black fabric dye. All the interior is going to be black. Cleaned up the floorboards a little too but the wife decide to make plans for me today.

Ok got the floorboard done. Didn't wait long enough for the rubber coating to dry so I'm going to have to touch it up later. Seat gave me some issues getting it back in. Changed out the front diff today since the PO left half the bolts undone and the other half were the wrong size. Can't believe I didnt notice it on the way home. 80 w 90 if anyone has any opinions on that please let me know. Ordered a crap load of parts today too.

136a Alternator w/ external regulator and 96 XJ alt bracket

Bosch 19lb. fuel injectors

CB radio w/ dual 4' antenna set-up (why? because I want it lol) AND PA! Just to annoy my wife

Paycheck parts: Bored out TB, THOR cowl intake and whatever mystery parts I need to unscrew whatever the PO did to the rear axle (either welded or spool) JKS quicker disco's

just from experience that rubber coating dosnt do well in areas that are constantly coming in contact with something else i.e. floor boards it will just wear away and in a matter of weeks no matter how much time you spent on prep. herculiner or u-pol are better applications

also forgot to mention how warm that floor will get and it will probably soften that stuff up

I was going to put some dynomat on the floor the cut out some carpet to put over it. I just wanted the rubber for water proofing until I get any holes I havent found sealed up. Hopefully the dynomat will keep the heat out of the cab since I'm running no A/C (another project for some day).

The wires for my alternator are getting bumped up to 4 gauge cept for the main ground. It'll be 2 gauge. Its probably the third time I've done the alternator upgrade but this is a first for renix engines. I read thru this http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/zj-136a-alternator-into-4-0-renix-xj-109847/ and seemed pretty strait forward. Already ordered a 96 bracket, ZJ alternator and picked up a new belt just incase. I have the exact regulator too so should be good to go.

x2 times a million. you will regret that stuff I have it in my cherokee and it is horribleI put my nasty @$$ carpet back in just because of how horrible that sutff is. Upol is nice but you have to spray it, Mosterliner is nice and you can roll on and hurnculiner is less nice but still nice its pretty rough though I have it on the bottom half of cherokee and have skinned my knickles more than once on it so it may not be good for the floor if you drive barefoot at all

You should change your wires to either 4 or 2gauge wires because upgrading to a 136amp alt maybe give those wires a problem..the wires leading to the alternator

Ok cool I learned the hard way but caught it in time. Thank god it didn't burn down on me I would've been heartbroken!!!!

LOL nice.

& awe youre not leaving the stickers? hahahah

Sorry guys been a bit since I've updated. What I've done since

Swapped out the injectors

Fixed vacuum leaks

Peeled or scraped off 90% of the stickers

Allignment

Ball joints

Drained all the fluids inclued diff covers

Found out I have a mini spool in the back and its not welded but still makes it a pain in the a$$ to drive on the roads

ISSUES to address (just informational I know how to use google I promise) lol

Wobble at 50ish MPH think its tire shimmy but not positive

Blew out my stearing gear box on the trail this weekend (I'll post pics was pretty awesome)

Brakes need a big upgrade along with the steering - Going to put in a 96 cherokee brake booster / master c then add some black magic brake pads - Durango gear box is next with C-Rok inner brace since I'm pretty sure the bumper I'm running is bolted to the outside. If not ill get the whole get up.

Lastly for now is getting some more down travel on my rear springs some how. I'll do the research and see what I can find out.

Finally some pics of my first run with Oahu Heavy Hitters (OHH) brought the wife along too and she loved it.

Two wheels kind of scared the wife a bit hahaha

Didnt deflate enough since my tires are cracking and it cost me

Good recovery team. My wife managed to climb out the passenger side window barely but I was stuck dangling from the driver side. The truck made it thru "Jeep Eater" without any issue but got hung up on the BS trail up to the camp site.

She held tight the entire time

Thanks! It was pretty awesome.

Shes getting a 1999 Durango Steering box / C Rok brace upgrade - ZJ brake booster / master cylinder - New pads for the front and probably new hardware for the drums. Probably going to throw some hockey pucks into the front springs so I'm not using my inner fenders to stop my uptravel.... lol

Not an exciting update but I ordered new locks today and they were the wrong ones. So I made them fit with a grinding wheel and some patience. After getting them in and making sure they worked I took them back out and had them re=keyed to the ignition. Now I have one key for both doors and ignition and a vehicle that locks. Score.

My CROK steering brace came in today and so did my pillar lights. My spider gears for my rear axle showed up too but I'm starting to have doubts about swapping out that mini spool.

I used a lock from a new model XJ, took the twist plate (not sure what its called) and grinded it down until it fit flush on the new lock cylinder. After I got it grinded down enough I put the retaining clip (with a little bit of force) on the back of the twist plate. The lock cylinder is a little small but it fits. When I can find some rubber gasket material ill put a backing on it. Anyway after I got it all back in I took the ignition key and the lock cylinders into a locksmith and had them rekey it.

Replaced the underhood light today with an LED. The thing is out of control bright. Also installed a new self amplified PA speaker. Can't get my CB to tune right though.
