hitman72
What have you guys done in the way of bedliners? drop-in, spray-on, roll-on? I was quoted $400 do get it rhino lined, don't have that kind of cash at the moment. I have heard the roll-on kits work good you just have to do twice the amount they recommend. Thanks
ParadiseMJ
I did the Herculiner roll-on. Did not have to do twice the dose. I have a SWB truck. If you have a long bed, you might need an extra quart Just takle the prep part seriously, the hardest part IMHO. It works best on lightly sanded existing paint. Not recommended to sand it down to bare metal. I did mine on a Saturday...prep and rolled on...and let it dry all night and all day Sunday. Here's Some pics...still holding up well. Cost $110 total. This first picture kind of looks like the green came through, but it didn't, the bed was never green. That's just reflection, the original color was S - - T brown. Close-up shows how it looks. The first time you wash it, it loses the gloss effect and goes to flat/matte black.
hitman72
thanks for the pics. So you used the whole gallon on a short bed?
neohic
I did the Herculiner roll on kit as well. I ended up putting a couple coats in the bed followed up with some touch ups. This picture has the bed mat, but it shows the texture a little better: I'm a sucker for trying to keep rocks off of my rocker panels too, so they got a healthy two coats as well. All in all, there's over two gallons of the stuff on my truck. I love how it holds up, but it's all in the prep. A down side though is that it does fade in the sun. Mine didn't turn brown, but it is a flat black. Putting down a quick coat of black paint helps keep other colors from showing through.
hitman72
so its all about the prep....! Did you do two layers (role on let set x amount of time and then reapply) or just one layer really thick?
ParadiseMJ
thanks for the pics. So you used the whole gallon on a short bed? Yep. That's two coats and I put 3 coats on the tailgate. FYI...wear gloves, clean up spills IMMEDIATELY, once it's dry it's there for good...
Lee21490
Been thinking about doing the herculiner (You can get a gallon of it from amazon for $50 i think atm) After seeing the pics i think i will :o

I put down one coat then let it get tacky. Once it's mostly dry, I threw on another coat. It's also nice to get a can or two of the spray on liner as well for getting WAY into the corners and up under the bed rail.
gogmorgo
I bought my truck with what looks to be a factory drop-in liner. Pros: completely water-tight? says Jeep on it. Cons: No tie-downs unless I want to cut holes in it, in which case I expose the bed to water which will then just sit there under the liner... My $0.02 us that you're better off with the paint-it-on liquid kind (either spray or roll-on) unless you never plan on using your tie-downs. 87Warrior
I did the Upol Raptor. If you have a decent compressor this is the way I would go! http://www.tptools.com/U-Pol-Raptor-Spray-On-Truck-Bed-Liner-Kit,2600.html?b=s*raptor I bought the kit for $130. Looks like you can get it for $110 now. I worked on prepping the surface. Generally all you would need to do is scuff, clean, and spray. This bed has several to the metal scratches and scrapes, so I sanded them down smooth, masked the bed and sprayed the areas with self-etching primer as suggested by the U-Pol instructions. Then I started with the bed liner. I was very nervous about doing this since I have never used an air gun to apply any sort of paint. Luckily it was a piece of cake. Dump 250ml of hardener into a quart of liner, shake, screw it to the gun and apply between 40-70psi of pressure. The more pressure, the finer the texture. Set the regulator to 70psi and went to town. Be sure to wear some sort of mask, the fumes are insane. I applied two cost of this stuff, and still have a 1 quart bottle left for touch ups later on down the road. After the first coat: The texture is very nice. I ran the gun at 70psi wide open and got a nicely textured, hard as a rock finish. It is just a touch more textured than plastic drop in liners. Has anyone tryed this stuff on bumpers etc? or has anyone tryed the tintable option to get another color other than black? considering the quote I got from lineX (and it does not yet include the bumpers sliders or fender flairs)....this stuff is looking pretty sweet. Walkenvol
I got the same application using a hopper gun (tool used to apply popcorn ceiling treatment). I used the rustoleum bedliner product and its stayed on well for 10 years. Same look as the pros get.
KYMJ
I did Monstaliner, doesn't look as good as 87warrior's but pretty close. I really like the look and like not haveing the plastic liner. 1 gal kit roll on 2 coats. It has chipped in a few places on the tailgate, so I'll have to buy a touchup kit. hitman72
Ya the role on is looking like the way to go. I am also looking at using the dupli-color spray can stuff on my finder wells and flares.

It is pretty neat stuff and seems to be used for a variety of applications. Several years back there were a few guys on JeepForum applying U-Pol Raptor to darn near everything. I haven't been over there is quite some time so I don't know what the total outcome was. I have seen somebody spray the inside tub of a Wrangler with the tintable kit. It looked darn good and the color match was nearly spot on. On the plus side, I was able to use the U-Pol gun and a 3M wand to apply POR15 to the inside of my frame rails :) I used 3 of the 4 quarts to do my longbed. I looked at the roll on stuff, but it all seemed a little to 'aggressive' for my liking. Don't want to tear up my dog's feet when he goes for a ride. KYMJ
Monstaliner is pretty smooth, not what I'd call aggresive feeling. One thing I remember about the roll on that I didn't like-the 2nd coat goes on after a full 5 hours allowing the product to "skin" over. I kept having to pull chunks out after rolling. Spraying would be the way to go id you have the place to do it.
