jimoshel
"87 MJ. 2.5, AX4, 2WD. DD. About a month ago it made one little klunk. Slowly got more often and louder. Narrowed it down to the right front. By ear. Sometimes will do it by changing speed but not often. Most noticeable on a bump or rough road. All indications are a bad , loose shock mount. Jacked it up, both front wheels off the ground. Crawled underneath with a 3ft pry bar. Pried on every joint under it. Both ends all 3 control arms, both ends track bar, Tie rod end, joints, pitman arm, steering box mounting, Both shocks, the little shock absorber going from engine to frame. Nothing. Everything nice, tight, solid. Maybe an 1/8 inch vertical movement on left front tire. Right tire solid. No bearing noise when spinning tire. What gives? Any ideas? Is definitely a metallic klunk. MJRemi
Did you check the R motor mount or maybe the R brake caliper?
cruiser54
I had a rattling/klunking steering stabilizer shock that drove me nuts. Maybe?
HOrnbrod
Did you get a maybe 6' 2x4 under the front wheels and lift vertically straight up and down while some one was watching the ball joints for movement? Sounds like you might have when you said "Maybe an 1/8 inch vertical movement on left front tire". There should be no visible movement. It sounds like a ball joint to me. I have a similar clunk when I hit a bump, like the little reflectors in the centerline of the road. But it sounds like it's coming from the rear, the front end is solid. Can't find it either............
gogmorgo
When I bought it, my 4x4 had a disturbing clunk from the front right corner whenever I hit a bigger bump. P.O said he took it to a couple mechanics who couldn't figure it out. Threw a bungee cord over the battery and no more clunk.
Naterenfo1
Check your sway bar links- make sure they are tight with a ratchet, otherwise my next guess would be a balljoint
Eagle
I'm going to guess control arm. When bad they make a very noticeable clunk, and because they are a steel sleeve inside a rubber bushing they always have some play anyway ... so it's difficult to diagnose them visually. 1989 Eliminator
Believe it or not I had the same problem and it was my steering stabilizer. It had bad bushings so it kept rotating and klunking.
