Detroit 6-71

I was offered a free 6-71 today. Fella just wants it out of his garage. Says it runs good, needs nothing. I've heard about them but I'm not familiar with them. Would it work in a MJ conversion?

Would love to see that, that would be one large heavy hunk of Detroit to stick in such a small space on unibody chassis.

A least it would,nt rust, them things were built to leak oil

coming from the vw world. anything will fit in anywhere, all you need is bracketry.

Having dropped a 500CI from a '74 ElDorado into a '64 Corvair, as well as some other weird crap, I am aware that anything can be done if one is determined enough. However having matured, what ever in hell that means, I now try to keep things a little more practical. Any way going over tomorrow and get it. We'll see.

a few years ago a friend on mine took oen of those big 500ci cadi engines and tossed it in a 'camino. he did all the math down to what gears/tires/...well, everything adn was getting 24 mpg solid no matter what from it.

There's something to be said about colossal engines turning slowly. No one expects them to get the fuel economy they do.

Got pics? Did you keep the rear engine location? That's something I'd love to see.

Way back when I had plans to put a 3-53 into my F100.Never did happen before I wrecked it, but from the research I did, you want to put a turbo on it, not for power, but to quiet down the exhaust. Without a turbo there is no muffler on this planet that can quiet a 2 cycle diesel down to reasonable levels.

The 6-71 name comes from the fact that this particular engine is an inline 6 cylinder, with each cylinder being 71 cubic inch displacement. What's commonly referred to as a 6-71 blower is just the supercharger that came on these motors. Since they are a 2-stroke diesel, they actually NEED the supercharger to run.

My pops has a 4-71 motor on a skid at his shop, and it is MASSIVE... no way it will fit inside a comanche engine bay. A 6-71 is going to be two cylinders longer, with even less chance.

X2 length hight & WEIGHT, oh my god,

But a great Motor, i wouldnt let the chance go by to take one home for free

Lernt to drive a truck with 6-71 & 13speed R&R, begin 2 stroke & 13R&R spent all day changing gears.

I tried posting this earlier but something was screwed up, I think it was mostly PhotoBucket and i couldn't get anything to work. So I started the second thread on getting another MJ. Anyway, got over to the fellas garage and saw what a 6-71 was. No way it was going into a MJ. Besides, I think the guy had changed his mind about giving it away. Thought maybe into a J20. We got to talking about Jeeps and when the conversation got around to MJ'S he casually mentioned he knew where one was and was I interested. HA!

Went across the street to his daughters house and behind the garage was this '90 MJ. We talked. 2 Ben Franklins and a PC for a couple hundred changed hands and I had another MJ. For the rest of the story, go now to the 'HoHum another one yawn' post.
