to keep it short i want a carbed inline six but in my area a 258 it a pain to find but parts are everywhere so how can i get a 4.0 to run off a carb for cheap. sarge needs a new heart and my 2.8 gave up the ghost before i could do anything worthwhile to the rest of the rig. I want a carb. i know all the advantages to FI but its my preference.

You will need an electric fuel pump with a regulator to drop the pressure down for a carb.

A 4.2 intake will bolt to a 4.0 head with very minor grinding and a 4.0 header.

Ignition will be the tricky part, but I believe the HEI setup for a 4.2 will work in a 4.0.

HEI will drop right in. 4.2 intake with a Weber. Woohoo.

I'm sure some of the aftermarket companies still make electric fuel pumps that produce 7 psi for use with carburetors. It would have to be mounted externally but no regulator will be needed. Check Summit racing.

i heard there was a problem with spacing on the intake ports on the 4.0 head where theres bumps for the injectors and the 258 intake doesnt cover that any thoughts on how to overcome that?

When I was swapping a 4.0 head on my 4.2 I did not notice any intake manifold mating issues. I did have to grind some down on the bottom of the intake manifold due to some alignment pins stuck in the 4.0 head. Real easy fix to see and understand when trying to test fit. This was on a 90YJ with the Carter carb that had stepper needles.

Does Offenhauser still offer a 4.2 intake manifold? If so, that coupled with a Weber carb would be slick on a 4.0.

A guy at work had a 258 with a 4.0l head and a carb in an eagle. He said it was fairly simple to put together.

Its too bad he just sold the engine to swap in a v8,it was pretty heavily modded and had almost no miles.
