89 Mj With Column Shift?!!

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a donor truck with a column shift steering column. The one I just bought was stolen at one point and the steering column is F'd up. 1st, how rare is this model with the column shift and can anyone help me find a replacement?????

The column shift is not all too rare. Like anything with these trucks you will play hell finding parts. How bad is the column? Most GMs use a very similar column and can be robbed for parts.

It is totally jacked. The key tumbler area has been reamed to about twice the size, and the housing has a big rip in it to accomadate the screwdriver to start it with.

I'm glad to hear it's not too rare. I have a 99' XJ, and just assumed they were all floor shift because of that I guess. The blinker housing doesn't work either.

I will post a pic of the jacked column later....if I can figure how to. Thanks for the reply.

Some have converted to floor shift lots of those parts to be found as the Cherokee is the same.

If you're fine with a floor shift, I would go that route. Just rob the floor shift kit from an XJ and you're good.

Sounds like a conversion is the best thing to do. Were there any XJs made with the column shift?

Most of the base MJ models w. the bench seat had column shifts. There were probably more MJ's manufactured with column shifts than with floor shifts. I don't know your location, but they are not hard to find here. As far as XJs, column shifts were rare.They are usually found only on government agency fleet models or on some with the police package.

Probably just as common as the bench seats in XJs. That would be the reason for column shift. I have never seen one personally...just pictures.

I'd keep the column shift, if possible. While I like the looks of the floor shift in my trucks, I love the one column shift I have. That big bench... that unobstructed floor... :drool:

Of the 4 (badly decomposed) MJ's I've seen in the 2 yards here over the last year, 3 of them were column shifts, the 4th was a 5 speed floor shift. I've gotten all my parts except the taillights and tire holder from XJ's.
