lifter tick?

Sounds like I have a lifter ticking on my 2.5... what are my options? If/when it goes out, will it grenade the whole motor or just run like crap? Only makes the noise after a long drive and its nice and warm. Not looking to swap my 98k mile motor for another 2.5, but curious what i could do about this.

 

87 2.5 and i changed the oil 200miles ago.

Take a peek into the oil filler hole. Is it sludgy, caked, or otherwise unsightly?

 

And, ditch the Fram for a Wix, Napa, or Mopar. How do you know the previous filter was a food one?

 

Purolater Pur-one is good also.

 

As far as the lifter, a thicker oil would probably fix it.

That's on a 4.0, but might work on a 2.5 also.

None of this helped.. Added an "oil treatment".. nothing.

Tried holding it at higher rpms, the oil treatment, warming it up before driving and running it cold.. happens mostly at lower rpms, and once it's warm.. say, about 10 miles into my commute to work.

Seems to be getting worse.

One way to get an idea where the sound is, is to pull the oil fill cap out while it's running, and watch one of the rockers. If the noise is the same speed as the rocker is moving, it's in the valve train, if it's twice as fast, it's in the rotating assembly. After that, I would poke around with a stethoscope and see if you can at least identify if it's a lifter or if it's further up.

Strange to hear the thicker oil didn't help it (if you did use any by chance). When I got my truck, it had the same problem, and I know that it was a sticky lifter. I didn't use any treatment, but have switched to 10-40 weight oil. Tick has gone away and the motor runs smooth. Now if only I could get rid of it's occasional stumble... :ack:

Noisy lifter is probably one of the most frustrating things to cure. Sometimes the best solution is to just replace it. I've had noisy lifters of every kind at one time or another , with different cures working for them. The most stubborn was a 389 Pontiac. Noisy lifter, Cold, warm, hot, idle hi rev, all the same. Tried all the cures, thicker oil, thinner oil, Lucas, STP, Marvel Mystery, etc, etc. No joy. Finally removed the valve cover and determined for sure the bad lifter. Turned the engine until that pushrod was at the highest point. Took a BAH and smacked it a good one. Fixed it right up. Worth a try.

is it a rhythmic ticking, sort of like "tika-TIK...tika-TIK...tika-TIK" that increases with engine rpm? If yes, I would suspect a worn timing chain. Had the same problem with my 2.5 and pulled all the lifters/r&r'd the whole top end with no change. Ended up being the timing chain was stretched and slapping the timing cover. Replaced timing set.
