Optimas used to be great so older versions are much better than the new ones. Then they got bought out by Johnson Controls (people looking to exploit the name), production was moved from the US to Mexico, the internals were cheapened greatly, and they still charge a premium price. Dozens of posts about this all over the net. Caveat Emptor for anyone still buying them.

Look up "sudden Optima death syndrome" on the web. I was a victim of this problem. I went to a NAPA Legend series and never looked back.

This. Sudden instant and total death leaving you stranded with no warning anywhere.

Optimas are crap, total crap.

Holy smokes really. All you guys are living in the past. I have a few optimas that are 5-6 old with zero problems. A couple years ago (2-3 years) optima had trouble, now they are back in the game. Do some research TODAY on them.

Great deal for a yellow top. I was going to get 2 yellow tops for my CTD, but decided 230 bucks each was a little spendy. All my offroad rigs have rocked optimas for safety and convience. I have one in the plow truck now and one in the xj. Both red tops. Both are at least 5 years old; I never done anything but used em.

Yes mine are the older version which has been proven they are good batteries. I bought a blue top a year ago and it was awesome for my pickup camper. Never charged all season.

I find many mixed reviews even today. A have personal knowledge of a red top that has been replaced 3 times in the last 18 months since it was purchased new and the selling dealer will not give a refund, exchange only, even though they acknowledge it is the batteries and their own tests could find nothing wrong with the XJ it is in. Even if Optima did fix the problems ( no way a certainty ) they are still the company that screwed a relatively small customer base over for years and years. Why support them?

I did my research. I had one die on me that was 18 months old. No warning, just dead. That was enough to change my mind. I will never pay for a Optima battery. Again. I have 2 in my CTD and that is because they were free and both of my stock ones died the same day. I will put them back in the Charger because they are the only thing that fits within my intercooler piping. The MJ will get the other one because I have it. Like I said, if they were not free I would not run them. They are so great the Marine Corps is not using them any more. What does that tell you about them?

I had two blue tops die last year. They were on my service trailer, and I guess they couldn't handle being deep-cycled once :fs2: Ran them down and they wouldn't take a charge after that, got them tested, both came back bad.

And the red top I had did the sudden death thing. I thought it was a great battery, then one day it did nothing. Wouldn't charge again.

So, not taking an Optima for $125 even.
