The art of JY'ing and CL

Looking for tips and ideas here...

There are somethings you cannot pass up when you find them, aside from typical MJ related atifacts like good MJ tailgates, rear bumpers and tailights, what are the specific things you guys look for and that one must grab,,,,most importantly, exactly how do you guys keep your finger on the digital pulse for such wanted items?

For example, I always peruse the Ford section of every yard I visit in hopes of finding that elusive F250/350 HP D60 kingpin front axle. I'm always checking CL and have recently become a user of www.allofcraigs.com to see if there is anything noteworthy close to me. Also, the iphone app for CL lets you search multiple cities and I use that too.

On CL, I've just found a nearby 1978 F250 4x4 Camper Special, which may have that HP D60 but the poster has not returned my calls or emails yet. Quite irritating.

The prime tip is simply WOM (word of mouth) but some of us aren't quite so connected. So besides knowing someone or physically searching in the yards, how do you guys exercise your chi in the ways of CL/JYs/Ebay to find those highly sought after items. What are your tools, (its okay to share trade secrets here, you're among friends), just wondering how do you guys keep tabs on the digital world, like I said you're among friends, what is said in CC stays in CC....so please share, since I feel my chi may be running low. I'm not talking about having Currie's number on speed dial, I'm asking for tips according to all you high-tech low buck rednecks (Northerners included) who can't afford such liberties. Maybe others out there could use the tips too.

I'm in a Facebook group for all of Long Island NY, its called Long Island Jeeps and instead of dealing with people not answering emails and phones, people answer very quickly and if not theres usually a friend of the poster who knows a little about it if they don't respond within a day or so, its been working very well and alot more people are meeting each other and making meet and greets and what not. That and having a few friends who are also searching for similar parts as me, we can always count on each other to find something one way or another

I passed up taking parts off a Comanche in a Pull-a-Part with a perfect rear bumper, tail gate, and tail lights.

The key is to always be alert and ready to go. The $500 donor XJ I bought for my project I caught within a few hours of being posted on Craigslist and drove three hours to buy it at 1AM in less than twelve hours of it going online.

I hit every JY in the county, leaving a CC card with my name and phone number and a promise of $20 to who ever called me when ever a MJ came in. Also Craigs List is the second thing , CC being first, I read of a morning.

I am always on the hunt for 80's turbo MOPAR stuff and 82-84 Dodge Rampage and 83 Plymouth Scamp crap. I cut my teeth in a 79 Plymouth Horizon and love everything about the L body cars of the 80s. I want to get my hands on another turbo van to play with. A 2 year only ride is pretty hard to find though.

There are two vehicles that will always be in my garage, a MJ and the Shelby Charger.

I find myself buying body clips and unique (to the vehicle) bolts and crap like that. I have a whole old fishing box fill of odds and ends. Emblems are another favorite but I have sense sold off my smallish collection.

I honestly can say I have not been to the junkyard for almost 6 years. They bend you over on price so bad it rediclous. :fs2:

I use searchtempest to look around on craigslist. also remember that people are not very good spellers, so loose you good speller cap once in a while and throw in a few extra M's or E's.

This. Use SearchTemptest.com and make sure the 'ANY' option is selected and then run a search for "comanche commanche comanchee commanchee camanche camanchee"

jeep clubs are the worst and best when it comes to finding things. someone finds something somebody needs. 9 times out of ten they post online in the club (dumb!). which then leads to nine million people calling/going/doing something to get that part or drive up the price. not cool but usually a first come first serve thing. so thats good if your there first. then on the other hand. you post up what you need and when someone finds it, they send you a PM. awsome.

i look up online any and all JYs in my area. within two hours. sometimes four if i really want something. then proceed to hit them all up if local. if not i call every now and again asking for what i need. usually they keep stock but some places go off memory. in which case i ask them to look and say ill come buy it if you have it. that gets them off their asses sometimes.

then its the same CL crawling few times a week or just posting my own topic on what i want on there. that works good to if you post enough to stay on the first page. ive found most people don't really want to dig through CL espcially for something someone else wants. using the search all craigs thing is good too but you never really know where what you want is going to end up being at. half way across the country, @#$% that! id still email and ask about shipping or meet half way but those usually don't ever happen because "shipping is more work then i want to do" or "pay my gas" which then makes the deal well, not so much a deal
