xjrev10. He's an awesome dude and a great MJ ally in these parts. Otherwise, I'm about a four hour hike from Duluth.

Why the move?

O the kind words

:rotf:

Anyway, yeah, I'm about 70 miles north of Duluth, but I travel that way quite frequently. I grew up about 20 min north of Duluth, so I have lots of friends that direction.

We should have a Comanche Club GTG up on the Iron Range (60 miles north of Duluth) this summer! Do some wheeling and BBQing or something!

hornbrod, yes sar duty at the small boat station.

sounds like fun guys, I need to get a few more things for the truck, like a new front shaft that is longer than the stock one was.

are there any junk yards in the area?

If you don't mind,

Whats SAR duty? I have always been interested in the Coast Guard, but never ended up going down that path

Search and Rescue. Encompasses anything from pulling drunken small boat skippers off sand bars and reefs to pulling folks out of the water after a storm to whatever else could happen answering a distress call. Interesting duty, you don't get bored. I did it for a few years in the Chesapeake Bay w. the CG between hitches in the USN. What I liked about it most was if you went down, you could most always wade ashore since it was a CG small boat.

Only kidding - the USCG is a super group and vital to our security now more than ever before.

hornbrod, remeber what they say about the navy, Big grey and Underway, Coast guard small white and home at night.

So During the winter in MN, specifically the duluth area, what do people do for traction in the snow, do people use chains, get studded tires, or get a set of snow tires? Just wondering,

I got a brand new set of General Grabber A/T 2's mounted on my wifes grand cherokee.

neohic- I am really thinking of getting with you about having a rear bumber built. I want to have a hitch built into it.

No chains, studded tires, none of that. In fact its illegal.

Duluth, it will be handy to have 4 wheel drive because the city is built on the side of a hill. Snowy roads don't bother me a bit. I have lived up here my whole life. I've run all sorts of tires in the snow. The only ones that make a noticeable difference are the marketed "snow" tires. Never owned a set, driven a few cars with them and it helps out alot.

The one thing about 'snow' tires that I forgot to mention..

They are made from a softer rubber. They wear out quickly on hot, dry roads. Some folks have 2 sets of tires, winter tires and summer tires. I don't.

Tires like the Cooper STT are made from the same type of rubber. They wear quickly (25k on my 31/10.50s and they where toast) but they are good in the snow!

Are there any offroad/4x4 shops in the area

Take a look around at MN-Jeep.com. I know... I know... CC is all kinds of awesomeness, but MN-Jeep is more local and it's easier to cruise the classifieds when it's all local stuff. Special bonus is the random spam-bots popping up just about every week! Check around on there... lots of good stuff.

Ben's house.

Rob

Shh! I consider myself homeless until I have a work space again. The over cramped two stall just isn't working for me... unless you need a rear bumper. My garage works well for rear bumpers. :D
