Drahcir495
I am getting ready to buy speakers for the Comanche, and I have a few questions. The back speakers are 4x6, correct? Any way to put 6x9's in there? if yes, how much modification was needed for the install? Anyone have pictures? Thanks, Rich
JohnQ
I'm working on installing some 5.25 Infinity Kappa's in the back and in the doors. I had them laying around and decided to get some use out of them.

aemsee
I looked at putting some 6x9's in my 88. There isn't much room back there. You'ld be better off getting the right size or boxing them and putting them behind the seat. I guess it depends on how ambitious you are.

Anyone have pictures? Thanks, Rich I had a pair of Infinity 4X6 (462.5) from my old TJ and put them in the back, like has been said not a lot of room in the back. I have the Infiinity Kappa Component speaker 5.25 in the front and will be putting in a cheap Panasonic subwoofer behind the seats. So far the sound is good, much better than stock. Like was suggested earlier perhaps an external enclosure for the rears or external pods might be better rather than hacking up the rear area for 6X9's. CWLONGSHOT
I have 6X9's in boxes behind the seats now. They sound good, but I will be putting them on the factory location when I gut the interior come spring time.... I say a pic somewhere, here I thought. Where a kid was able to cleanly mount a 6X9 to either sede in factory location only slightly canted.... Thats my plan along with some of thats afor mentioned Infinity component speakers for the front... CW
Eagle
The rear speakers for an MJ aren't really 4x6. I had one somewhere that I can't find at the moment. It's an odd critter. It's actually a round speaker mounted off-center on a rectangular plate. The plate itself may actually measure 4x6 but the speaker is, IIRC, either a 3-1/2" or 4" round cone. Dunno if a standard, oblong 4x6 would go in there or not. I'm inclined to think probably not, or else Jeep would have used standard speakers instead of this odd-ball thingie. Of course, once you're willing to start cutting you can pretty much make anything "fit." I'm not so hooked on big sound in a vehicle that I'm willing to cut metal just to fit a larger speaker. hemi_comanche
I recently redid the rear speakers in the truck, and took a more ambitious approach. I decided to make fiberglass speakers that were molded to the shape of the floor, so they wouldn't slide around. I used 6.5 Clarions, here are some pics. They sound great, and fit really well in the truck. I also have a padded center console that houses an 8in sub woofer (which is plenty for a small cab truck), and I have 5.25" 2 way flush mounted in door front speakers. Drahcir495
Very nice job Hemi! Thanks for all the input, guys. Crutchfield says that they are 4x6, so that is what I will install. Everyone seems to have the Infinitt Kappa's, maybe I will go with those. Thanks again for everyones help-Rich
Oizarod115
ive got 2 6x9s in the back in separate boxes... sounds really good... but for some reason both right speakers decided to quit out on me? idk.
CWLONGSHOT
Infinity 's are THE speaker!! To my ear at least, they are about the best sounding for a auto. CW

Duner
6x9's will fit in the rear panels if you space them out from the plastic panel with a 3/4" plywood ring and angle them they fit nicely. I'll try to find the pics they were posted but it has been over a year now so I'm not sure if you can still access them in the forum. If not I'll shoot some more pics this afternoon besides I have upgraded my sub woofer and have not posted any pics of that yet.

Yes they are 4X6 plates. But what Eagle is saying is the 4X6 he has is not really a "speaker" size. Its mearly a smaller round speaker put on a plate for fill a 4X6 opening and CALLED a 4x6 speaker... CW

Dunno why they did that, but it had to be more expensive than an off-the-shelf 4x6 speaker so I's guess there is a spatial constraint involved. Probably affects only purists like me who hate to cut metal in a vehicle.
feerocknok
I wouldn't recommend putting a round speaker in the stock location in the rear with a bench, due to the seat being able to soak up so much of the sound and make your speakers sound muddy. Infinity is definitely the way to go. That or JBL, who is made by Infinity. JBL is more my ear, but either is
BIGMASS
My rears are an actual 4x6. The cone is oblong not round. Infinity makes a direct replacement that'll fit. I've seen them at Future shop. I was planning on buying them cause I got a 15" sub and a Pioneer Class "A" amp to drive it and a buddy gave me two Pioneer 2 channel 80w amps that look identical to the Class "A". I figgured one to powwa my RF Fanaticx component set for the doors, and another for the rears. Um, I like LOUD

I've got a 12" going in Thursday, might run two, but didn't suspect a 15 to fit!
BIGMASS
I wanted to put it in the centre but I doubt it will go there. Looks like I might have to offset it to one side then stack my 3 amps on the other. It will likelly be a fiberglass box to save space
