Mirror Types

I'm a little confused about mirror types - can someone give me a simple rundown?

Just got an 87 comanche, right now it has big trucker mirrors bolted to the side of the door - looks like it used to have ones that were in the corner of the window.... i'd like to pick some up from a JY, what am I looking for?

Xj up to a 96 i think. ive got 96 mirrors on my half doors and 94 swapped on my 88 doors. thier in the corner, adjustable and can fold in. plus if yours were supposed to go in the corner of the door, there would be three screw holes. those bolts are torx fyi

Door mounted "trucker mirrors" were part of the tow package in '88, at least.

I think the tow mirrors were added by PO, because there are the 3 screw holes and the remnants of a bracket in the corner of the window.

online JY parts search brings up lots of options, what is the difference between sail type (frame mtd) and flag type(skin mtd)? Is it sail type that'll fit into the corner of the window?

Here are the three types of factory mirrors. The top left one goes in the window corner.

i have the corner mirror but mine does not fold like the one in the pic i never seen any of these before :dunno:

Are you sure yours don't fold? They don't stay folded, more like collapse when they hit something and spring back but not all the way back into the clip.

those are the same mirrors that are on my '95, but yet the ones on my '92 and '91 both fold and are spring-loaded. -the 86 ones are spring-loaded too.

I pulled a set of non-folding ones off a 94 or 95 XJ at the jy. They looked like they had never been disturbed until I removed them. :dunno:

I may have to retract the above statement. I was about to type "I've never seen one like that," but if they were used in the late 90s on XJs, it might be more accurate to say "I never noticed one like that."

 

It actually makes sense, considering that the majority of XJs never went off-road. I've had to repair or replace a number of the folding mirrors because the outer part of the notch into which the retainer rods fit broke off in cold weather, and the spring subsequently became too weak to hold the mirror in position at speeds faster than about 40 or 45 MPH.

Just looked in my 94-96 parts manual. XJ mirrors for these could be had with either Fixed Heads or Foldaway Heads. Didn't know that.........
