Should be by the hood latch area on passenger side fender of engine bay. Will have one wire on either side. It's a ceramic color.

Did more research, looks like 87s didn't have them from the factory. A few got them as a TSB but chances are pretty good that you don't have one.

Never really thought about it before so I went out and checked.

None had the ballast resistor or any sign or evidence that they ever did.

XJ'S. 7 XJ every year from '84 to '87 covered. No resistors.

First resistor I found was in a '88. with 88 and 89 having them.

Not trying to steal your thread but I have one on mine that is all busted up...what is it for?

 

It slows down the fuel pump after startup to reduce noise and allegedly lengthen the life of the pump. If they go out completely, the pump won't run, and the truck will die right after startup.

as a precaution to this (got stuck in the boonies), I carry in the tool box a short wire with a slip on connector on each end -- acts as a jumper till I can replace the bad unit -- or carry a spare resistor.
