Sir Sam
So I've been looking for a fiberglass shell/topper/cap/whatever-you-want-to-call-it for my MJ for awhile. I have given up on finding one on CL in my area, seems like shortbed tops are more common, or the longbed tops you find are Aluminum. Well yesterday I found one at the junkyard, its a longbed fiberglass, comanche specific shell. Two downsides, the top is missing the back window and all the hardware, and its not a raised rear top(which I prefer, but am not set on). Just for $hits and giggles I decided to hop on CL and see if there were any tops listed locally, turns out there is a longbed top listed up in the mountains, sent an email asking for pictures - hopefully I will actually hear back from him, but no telling if its in any decent shape or if its an Aluminum shell. The thing is, I get the feeling that getting the back window replaced is gonna cost more than the shell does - $77 at the junkyard. Anyone ever have to replace all the back window hardware? Seems like its pretty universal stuff, but just needs to be the right size and shape. The shell in question:
Automan2164
I say get it. And take some more pics of those graphics. That's the second time I have ever seen them. And send the rust free body my way, and any weird stuff, and the tail lights. Oh, and register it. Rob L.

Rob L. I took a pic of the vin to register it. here's a few more pics of the shell/truck - my main holdup on getting it is the rear window, I don't want to have to spend $500 to get a replacement window when I could potentially even drive out of state and get what I want cheaper than that. Pete M
for 77 bucks, I'd pass. the right one is out there somewhere. mine cost me 25 and even came with a rear window. :D (with a broken hinge though)
buxmj
Good luck, whatever you decide. I found one for 100 but it cost me 300 to get it shipped to Florida from South Carolina. The long bed topper is such a hard size to find. The only thing that looks good is a topper made just for the comanche. Take a picture to a topper place and see if they can price it. Might help if you can tell what company made the topper, usually on the back window! If you buy the jy one, be sure to take a board and 2 clamps so it doesn't flex and crack. I had an aluminum one on my truck for 20 years, wanted a fiberglass topper, looked for 3 months on CL and no luck. I ended up using a used auto part locator. HOrnbrod
If it was a Leer I'd say buy it, and p/u a rear hatch from a SWB topper as they are the same. Plenty of them around. But that's not a Leer, looks more like a Brahma , and they are scarce. So I also say pass on this one.

Ya I've found a good number of LWB shells far away, this one is temping because its pretty close, and its the first LWB fiberglass shell I've found. If it was a Leer I'd say buy it, and p/u a rear hatch from a SWB topper as they are the same. Plenty of them around. But that's not a Leer, looks more like a Brahma , and they are scarce. So I also say pass on this one. All the Brahma's I used to see where a weird composite plastic - not a fiberglass. This one was definitely fiberglass. Sir Sam
Well here's the pics of the other one I emailed about, anyone know the brand? Seems like for $150 and a much further drive its still a better deal because I won't need to replace the rear window, really considering trying to pick it up. Automan2164
Hey buddy, it says leer on the back hatch. I would get it. Show up with $100. Not much of a market for a topper for a 20+ year old truck. I like it because it has a notch for the cargo light. Mine doesn't. Rob L. :D

Rob L. :D I was thinking it was a leer, but I didn't see it anywhere on it, where do you see the leer? And I'm not going to show up with $100, its a 3 hour drive each way and I gotta get my buddies truck to do it. Plus thats kinda a fool move on my part. But I agree, I was thinking of offering him $100. Seriously though, where does it say Leer? I must be blind because I sure can't find it. EDIT: Never mind that, I found it. Dirteatr717
I have that exact one it's a leer :) Get it!
Comanche County
I think I'd get it, then use plexiglass as a short term fix if possible.
Sir Sam
Well it sounds like this is the real deal, the only thing it doesn't have is the raised rear, but I guess I could live without that, it's hard to be picky when I have such specific criteria. Plus it seems like since its a LEER its gonna be one of the better quality ones out there. Anyone ready to push me over the fence into buying this thing? I really wanna, but I haven't committed in my mind yet.
buxmj
Go ahead and get it! Mine is a Leer and remember I paid 300 to get it shipped to me. If you can drive and get it, grab it while you can. Don't forget the clamps!
WBKrazy
go for it! leer is one of the best out there, and replacement parts usually arent that bad either if anything breaks...
HOrnbrod
Yep, same one I have. Get it! I got mine by buying an Ebay 1989 Pioneer in PA for $500, flying up there and driving the truck back to AL. Swapped all the better parts from it (including the topper) then sold it here for $1000. It was in good shape. So I got the topper and had it painted for free. Actually made a few $$ :chillin:
Herc
Do it already!! :fool: I'd buy one if I wasn't gonna put a roll bar in my truck.
Sir Sam
Well I emailed him back to see if he will take $100. I'm looking at $60-70 in fuel to get it plus owing my buddy a favor. If its gonna cost me $220 to get it I just can't swing that right now.

Sir Sam
Well he told me he would not take less than $150 for it, which means I won't be getting it soon. This may not end up working out after all. Damm. :(
