It looks like it has an amsoil air filter box and all that... How do I convert it back to normal? It does burn oil, so how could I fix that? Eagle Posted October 24, 2010 Share Posted October 24, 2010 Amsoil is just a brand of synthetic oil. If you want to "convert" back ... just do an oil change. You can probably find multiple discussions of fixes using the search. Step one is to check your compression. If you have bad rings and are getting a lot of blowby, you can't fix it short of rebuilding the engine. If the rings aren't too bad, replacing the CCV tubing may alleviate most of it. Some people have made an oil catcher between the valve cover breather and air cleaner. I just replace the air filter twice a year. At $1.22 they are cheap from the junk yard. I always call and they say it's been forever since someone asked about one of those. All these damn mj owners... What are we going to do? Nothing to convert. I guess I misread your post in my first response. I thought you wanted to go back from Amsoil oil to conventional. Now I gather you were referring to the air filter. Just go to pep Boys or Advance Auto and buy a Purolator. The filter element in your air box is a stock filter element. It also doesn't look bad at all. The old Amsoil drop-ins had an orange ring like that, but the filter material is a blue color. The new drop in ones are black with blue filter material. Matt1971 Posted October 25, 2010 Share Posted October 25, 2010 Your CCV fresh air hose has been rigged, the hard plastic probably broke and they fit rubber tubing to replace it. No biggie should work well. How old is the filter? You shouldn't get a lot of oil in it unless your getting a lot of blowby. Check the hard plastic line in the rear of crankcase cover, someone on here suggested cleaning it with weed eater sting, it worked well for me got the gunk out. Also looks like your crankcase gasket is leaky, could be where you are losing some oil. Fix that and you can get rid of some of the burnt oil smell from it leaking onto the engine block. But like they have already said, it's an mj and an older engine, you just gotta live with little oil. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

btm24 Posted October 26, 2010 Share Posted October 26, 2010 Well thats a very long story on my truck and how i fixed yhings like the air filter. You see the last owners before me never did any thing to this truck ie fix any thing. I mean that, when i got it the guy said the rear main seal was shot ( it was not) and it had been that way for 5+ years just put a new qurt or oil in her every mounth. So how the air filter got gummed up :dunno: what i do know is that whn i got the truck oil was every where under the hood even tho the guy cleaned the hell out of it b4 i could come and see it. And there was oil on the air box. All i know is that i replaced it twice now( once when i 1st got the truck and the 2nd time when i sunk it :ack: ) amd ever since then i yave not had much of an oil leak or air filter getting gummed up. Its 22 years old what do you want from it? Is what my dad allways tells me. I'm sorry that came out a lot longer then i wanted to come out i got very long wended, hope that i was a help. I need to do an oil change on it and all that good stuff soon before I get the title for it, I plan on doing some engine stuff like valve cover gasket and air filter oil change and then going to the car wash and using some gunk remover stuff (not sure of name) on the engine and hopefully getting the old oil gone...
