MJ Trailers & Campers

Ever since mkbruin posted his little 5th wheel for sale on here, I have been OBSESSED with seeing if there are any other lightweight 5th wheels that could go behind and MJ. There are not many but they are out there. Pretty cool if you ask me; I would love to have one. With that I also started looking at campers that would fit an MJ since there are a few on CC. Again, not many, but there are some out there for mid-size trucks. Then I ran across this site last nite, and not only do they have something that would work in both a short or long box MJ, they will custom build a camper for just about anything you want, as evidenced by the Cheromanche below with it's own custom camper. http://www.coyoterv.biz/default.html

I've been oogling those tent campers since I saw one on a Tacoma in an issue of Petersons a few years ago. If I ever decide my goal with the MJ I'm gonna put one atop the canvas topper.

Either way, subscribed!

A full on camper is OTT for most MJ owners but "for what it's worth" in the Comanche scheme of things, ya might be suprised at just how capable the MJ is hauling one (even my 2.8L does great). We've been to some out the way places through some knarly terrain and up unmaintaned FSR's to the top of mountains without problems. You just have to take it steady, think ahead and gear up appropriately. Ideally I'd have a bumper winch but current finances dictate I make do with a hand crank comealong for emergencies.

Oh Yeah! One more thing, load levellers are essential! If anyone wants info on that give me a shout cos they are a PIA to fit and I've done it twice now :wrench:

Last weekend :brows:

"OTT"? Over the top? If that's what you meant, were you referring to a camper as in a towable camper, or a truck bed camper like yours? I love the look of a truck bed camper on an MJ, it just looks "natural" if you know what I mean.

the pic on the bridge could be a ad for an MJ back in the day. awesome.

"Over The Top", I've just realised how that could be misunderstood!!

I just meant OTT as in "That's way over the top man, what's wrong with a tent?!"

Love those old OTT campers! That's pretty much all we had when I was coming up in the 60-70s.

Not really. It says in my owner's manual that Jeep Comanches are not Recommended to be used with pickup campers. :rotf:

I do agree that its a great pic tho

Another pic of one behind a Nissan Frontier, right in my back yard no less, Blacksburg VA (boo Hokies!). Good looking setup IMO. I love the current body style of the Frontier and that 4.0 is a great motor. I had the new style Pathfinder as a company car from '04-'06, and if I bought a new or new/used truck today that would be the truck I get. Anyhoo, back to the little 5er behind it, I like it a lot. I'd have to put some chrome or brushed aluminum wheels on it though. :brows:

ok, there are a few small 5th wheels out there under 5k lbs, i.e. the MJ's max tow weight. This little guy is the bomb. Not 4950lbs maxing out the MJ, not a 2500lb fiberglass flyweight (although I do like that Escape). A just right 3500lbs, slide out, twin axle, full featured, @$20-25k new. In 3-4yrs hopefully I could pick one up for 1/2 that. :chillin:

I like that that one is tandem axle too. Thats pretty cool, never knew that these smaller 5th wheels even existed. Is there a 5th wheel hitch that fits the bed of an MJ?

Dually

Indeed. More info on that one?

$28k???? OUUUCCCCHHHHH!! Even though that is in Canuck... that's still ALOT of coin. I could easily afford a bigger truck and camper for that kind of money.

yeah, that's another reason i like that Chalet Takena 5th, about $8k less NEW, more room, better equipped. Buuut, those fiberglass jobs seem to hold their value because they hold up so well from what I've read. Look around for used Casitas or Scamps, 20yr old Scamp 5th wheels still bring $10k+. Like I said above, in 3-5 yrs I'm guessing a Chalet Takena could be had for mid to low teens.

More cool stuff....

I actually found this line before the Chalet Takena, but hadn't posted it yet. What's nice about the Cikira is that they have 6! models to choose from all under 5000 lbs, the biggest at 4920lbs but 26ft of trailer. Pretty cool. The 26ft'r is probably a tad much for an MJ, even under 5k lbs, 26ft is a lot of trailer behind you.

**Edit: I just realized the spec sheet and floorplans is for lite travel trailers AND their lite 5th wheels. They have two 5th wheel models, a 23' (4k lbs) and a 26' (4900lbs). Still pretty cool.
