What vehicle is that tranny/ rear end out of? If I recall, the 999 was the 4wd version of the 904 used in the AMC Eagle with a hydraulic lock up convertor. What gears are in the 20? That is actually a very strong rear end if you get one piece axles for it. The R&P are larger than a dana 44.

The 999 also made appearances in the XJ/MJ family. But your right, its basically a 904 with a locking converter.

Its a AX-4/5, thats what I get for posting that late instead of being asleep.

Ummm... a nice DP to start the morning makes all things better.

Since that '20 is behind a 2.8, it could have either 3.73 or 4.10's most likely. Here's some help to identify the ratio:

Identifying the gear ratio of an AMC 20 is a bit tricky. Dana axles normally have a tag on the left of the diff cover with the gear ratio at the time of build. The AMC axles have a code that has to be looked up in a table. The code is stamped on the housing boss to the left of the diff cover right near the axle tube. Good part about the stamp is it tends to stay readable longer than the tag, but you have to know the code. Since there are conflicts between what a code means for a narrow track and what it means for a wide track, don't count solely on the code to identify an axle. Bring a tape measure or know the source of the part.

Narrow Track AMC 20

Code Gear Ratio Diff Type

AA 2.73 Open

DD 2.73 Trac-Lok

BB 3.31 Open

CC 3.31 Trac-Lok

A 3.54 Open

N 3.54 Trac-Lok

GG 3.73 Open

Q 3.73 Trac-Lok

L 4.10 Open

M 4.10 Trac-Lok

I spun it (counted the driveshaft rotations vs. wheel rotations), and got 4.10:1 out of it with an open diff. I don't really need the axle cause I already have 4.10s on my 35 and it has new brakes, races, and looks pretty.

Can someone help me out with figureing out how much it'd cost to get? The price list says:

Cost: $75 Core: $25

Is the axle $100 at first, $75 if I bring an old 20 back, or $75 first, $50 with a core back?

Lol, that was alot of responses! Thank you.

The AMC 20 is most certainly an upgrade to the Dana 35. Some junkyards will not blink an eye if you bring in an MJ axle for a core that doesn't quite match the one you're buying. But the core charge means that thye will buy your Dana 35 from you for $25. I can't see how that's a fair trade since you should be able to sell a good condition 4.10 Dana 35 for more than that. I'd buy the 20 for $100 and then sell the 35 to a private party.

It'll cost you $100 to get it out the door (75+25) If you bring them back an old axle, they'll refund you the core (25). Either way, it's a hell of a deal in my book.

Even if you don't *need* it, you could always get it and resell it for at least 2X what you paid for it.

Lucky dog....... :D

edit: Pete beat me to it. But, on the core charge at my junkyard, they really don't care what you bring back, just so long as it's essentially the same thing (like if you had an old rusted up axle lying out behind your house, just so it was a rear axle of some kind. All my place does is sell it for scrap. But, YMMV...

Hey, on a side note.....if you do go get it, can you grab me at least one of those rear bumpstops (or both)? One of mine is AWOL  The bolts will probably snap off inside the frame when you put a wrench on them but that's ok, I'll get new ones.

How well do the HD leaf packs flex? Just curious. 8)

They don't.

Well said.

And I have no idea how you guys manage to sell a D35. I had one with 3.07s and one with 4.10s. Both of them had to be given away - to the same guy - but the hitch was I also gave him a truck. The D35s were something I forced upon him.

I got $74 out of mine, but only because I sold it to a friend. 8)
