What would you do?

So I have some bad news... I was supposed to be picking up a 88' Jeep Comanche Pioneer with 120k on it, v6 5spd, no frame rust, interior mint, tires with probably 60-70% tread, that was having a new clutch and flywheel put into it. The truck is in great shape, supposedly engine and 4x4 work perfect, it only needs a valve cover gasket. We agreed on a price of $600 which I thought was a steal. I get a call tonight and the kids Uncle who was supposed to be fixing it wants another $300 to do it, but I really don't have any extra money to be spending, I would have to borrow it from someone. Is it worth spending extra money on it or should I just move on to something else?

if the parts come with it then buy it for 600 and install the parts yourself. its not that hard just time consuming

:agree:

I would tell them not to touch the thing & do the repairs myself, even if the new parts do not come with it. $600 for a truck with a good body is a very good price & you can still drive it home with a valve cover leak.

I would do that but I have no trailer to take it home. The transmission is already taken apart, (the kid started the project, got it apart, then didnt know what to do and decided to have the Uncle trailer it to his house). I live about an hour from him so renting something would be too costly unfortunately... Also I would feel a little lost starting from it being taken apart, I would feel more comfortable taking it apart myself so I could see exactly how everything went.

As far as rust free, it is more or less, has the regular rust around the wheel wells and a few rust spots on the side of the bed, but I wasn't/ am not too worried about it.

Sounds to me like they are trying to get some extra money out of you because they sold it too cheap....

I would second the idea of bringing it to your house and putting it back together yourself.

I don't know your truck situation... but U-Hell rents dollys fairly cheaply for one day rentals.(at least a lot less than $300)

bad position, if you tell them to screw off and leave it alone you'll come get it, who knows what parts will be missing. if you're desperate for this mj i'd counter offer, say 150 or something. and if you don't have to have it, tell them i don't have the money, and we agreed on a price and thats what i'll pay.

i'd never buy a vehicle that i couldn't start and drive, unless i knew i was tearing it apart anyway.

I honestly don't know what I would do. If there is "the usual" rust around the rear wheel flares, that means there's a lot more rust UNDER the flares, and who knows where else. So it is not "rust free." Without seeing it, in person, I would not want to offer an opinion as to how much I think it's worth. My opinion, though, doesn't mean much. What counts is how much it's worth to you, and how easy it might be to find another MJ in equal or better condition for the same price.

Being the ornery olde pharte that I am, I would probably walk away from the deal, because to me a deal is a deal. If you tell me I can have it, fixed, for $600 and then you come back and tell me you want 50% more, that's what I call bait-and-switch, and I don't deal with people who pull that crap. However, if I had been looking for a year or so and this was the only half decent MJ I could find, I might be forced to back off my principles and cough up the extra 300 clams.

For reference, a friend recently bought an '88 BJ base model with the Peugeot 5-speed, no rocker panels remaining, and a busted rear leaf for $1300 ... and he felt he got a decent deal.

As Eagle said, our trucks tend to rot from the inside-out, meaning that if you can see rust it's probably 10 times worse than it looks. make extra double sure that it's not doing that. there's a big difference between a rust-free rig that's derivable and a needs-the-same-amount-of-steel-surgery-as-if-it-had-actual-holes truck that's still in pieces.

I smell a scam.

My mistake, it is the inline 6 cylinder 4.0. I also wasnt going to actually purchase it until I could drive it and make sure it was OK. Unfortunately there are not a lot of comanches around here, and no Jeeps at all around this price in this kind of condition. I could buy a different truck for the same price, but it will probably have a lot more miles on it... I guess I will have to do some soul searching, haha I was psyched to be getting the truck, this is very upsetting... I wish I had extra money kicking around, I would just go for it.

As far as the rust, the frame was solid, it was just the body that was starting to rust and wasn't that bad. I don't care if the body is a little rusted as long as the structural integrity hasnt been compromised at all. The price was excellent, and seemed to be good to be true. We all know that when it seems too good to be true, it probably is, seems like a similar situation here. I just wish I didn't lose 2 weeks of a truck hunt, missed a couple good deals...

Any time some one changes the agreed upon price in the middle of a deal, Walk away from it. They are untrustworthy and and who knows what BS they been telling. If you know someone who's into old trucks and can have them look at for a second opinion go by their recommendation. Tha absolute worst way and/or time to buy something is when your emotion starts over riding your common sense.
