for the past 2 years i have been racing in the BF Goodrich Offroad Series here in Nova Scotia. I compete in the stock class. My first vehicle was a 96 XJ which took one HELL of a beating and never let me down. it has been submerged, sunk, stuck, pitchpoled and airborn more times than I can count. but it has come time to replace the XJ. Unibody vehicles can only stand so much abuse, and my obvious alternative was the Comanche. I lucked out and found a 92 SWB 4x4 with a 5 speed , 4.0 liter HO, and a Dana 44 rear. This will be a slow build , as racing doesn`t begin until next May, but I`ll keep you all posted !

is that as rust free as it looks ??

it`s actually not that bad. some of the floor and rockers need to be replaced ,and the box sides need some attention, but the frame is in great shape.

as for the proportioning valve..... it was like that when I bought it lol :D

not a 1992 baby, but still awesome none the less. Ever since one of our members found one with a birthday in late April 1992, I've been on the lookout for other 92 calender year birthdays.

  • 2 months later...

it`s been a long cold winter so far, but I am going to start tearing down the MJ next week.

I have been stuck in the house with a leg infection ( cellulitius ) for 2 weeks and have been making plans for the truck.

I am going to freshen up the stock motor with a 4.6 stroker kit

remove the AX15 and put the AW4 in its place

install a locker in the D44

gusset the front ,reinforce everything, swap in some F-150 coils and spacers for 4 inches of lift , and I may even tackle a4 link or a 3 link in the rear with panhard bar. not going for huge lift here, just want better handling.

I am thinking on bumping up a class, mostly because of the rules ,but this will still look like a stock MJ because I love the looks of these trucks !!

I`ll post up pics of the teardown /build up as it begins

got a lot accomplished today. motor, tranny, transfercase and both driveshafts are out. going to take the box off tomorrow . the drivers side spring perch is rotted completely off which is why it sits a bit crooked. the bed and underside of the box is in great shape, but the guy put new panels on the boxsides with rivets and fibreglass
going to take a lot of work to get it looking right but i think it`ll turn out fine.

made some progress yesterday. got the top of the frame finished, used 3/16 steel to do the top.

216795_10150285246733120_5818158_n.jpg
welded in some 1/4 steel for rollcage mounts which also tie into the cab supports.
285010_10150285246748120_774497_n.jpg
and welded in my 1st crossmember which will act as a mounting point for my lower control arms,as well as a driveshaft loop , also tied into the cab. and the second crossmember will be the mounting point for my upper wishbone setup. going to brace it in against the 1st crossmember today, ran out of flux core wire lol : :)

scored a quicksteer off of Ebay for $50 last night.

no sawing on the steering wheel this year !!

Ooo la la...details!

1.5:1 ratio. mounting it where the factory air box once was. going to run the air filter inside the cowl. I found out last season that hitting a 4 ft deep mudhole at WOT doesn`t work well with the filter in its stock location lol

snagged a 4 link kit with misalignment spacers on ebay last night. I still need to buy the nuts to make my arms, but at $150 total at my door it seemed like a good deal. If they last one season they are worth it.

also got a set of Edelbrock IAS shocks from Ebay, $40 a pair. I got #3319 Dodge Ram for the front and went with #3400 chevy 1500 for the rear. They were the longest shocks available .

got the D30 all stripped down and cleaned up yesterday after 2 hours of grinding off rusty brackets . I had another D30 for parts that was a freebie, as a guy had hit a concrete embankment with it and bent the passengers side axle tube. It had great spring perches on it , so I took my time and cut them off with a grinder, breaking the welds off at the tube.

I needed to make lower control arm brackets also, and just happened to stumble upon a piece of scrap 3/16 box metal, which fit my control arms perfect !!! I measure my XJ axle and these mounts are set at 85 degrees, pointing inward, from the factory. I have welded on LCA mounts at 90 degrees before, and while it works, it is hard on bushings, not to mention a PITA to get the bolts lined up.
