Automan2164
Just had a tune up? Start simple, if you havent already. Air filter, fuel filter, check gap... No speedo, are you sure on the milage? Rob L.
Eagle
A failing oxygen sensor can keep the engine running rich. Do you have any idea when yours was last replaced? The O2 sensor is a scheduled maintenance item -- it should be replaced every 75,000 to 80,000 miles.
Pete M
Does it still drive ok? Does it feel different? Have you tried filling the tank up to see if it's the gauge or sender that's faulty?
JeepcoMJ
if your speedometer isn't working, then your odometer isn't working, or isn't showing accurate. how are you gauging your miles travelled?
ratrapp
i would fix the gauges and see what i'm really getting.my mj with 160k 4.0 and a/t gets about 16mpg.it didn't get much better than that when it was new.my gas gauge when i fill it up takes 100-125 miles before it moves but is accurate when it hits empty.you can't trust the gauges in these trucks.mine is a bad sending unit. Geonovast
Me, my dad, and my brother have been driving Jeeps almost exclusivly since 1994, and have never had any gauge problems that were the fault of the gauge itself. Only problems I've had was a speedo that didn't always work, and that was the cause of a worn down speedo gear. Gauges have been pretty reliable for me. :dunno:
90eliminator
ok, the engine has 88k on it, so an o2 sensor is a great place to start...also probably will check the gap, is that per spark plug manufacturer or per engine requirement, if so what is it for ours... I am totally guessing at mileage per gallon, tank sending unit is operating correctly, filled it up, went from empty to full, and as I drive it drops...I need to replace the speedo cable....trip to the yard...oh well.... Thanks guys, I think that the o2 sensor will be my first step....S
maddzz1
if your speedometer isn't working, then your odometer isn't working, or isn't showing accurate. how are you gauging your miles travelled? Pat, My speedo doesnt work but my odometer does. Even the trip counter works. I think I messed something up when I took it apart to switch the odom to the correct mileage. I have a few around...got a pic of it? I can send ya the correct one.
dasbulliwagen
My fuel guage when I fill up goes to 1/4 tank real fast, but then it seems likew it will run at 1/4 tank for a long time, but seems like empty is correct so I havent tried to fix it. Find out what size tank you have and if you think it really is close to empty, you should be able to fill it close to what it is supposed to take. But yeah, fix your speedo first. Then go from there.
