axle swaps - noob Q

Recommended Posts

I found a D44 rear on a unfortunate neglected 92 MJ in the junk yard, want to put in on my 86, is it direct bolt on if the gears match or is there more to putting it on than there was to taking it off? Are there any good MJ specific writeups for this? I like pictures....

I tried looking for a thread on this but there are too many to keep sifting through for my attention span.

Thanks!

According to your signature...you '86 already has a D44 :hmm:

Maybe he wants to go 6x6?

...check out the sig... ;) :brows:

A woman and her rigs... its a beautiful thing!

In anticipation of the D44 that is assigned to it... I say the 86 has one.. just not installed until sunday  unless...

Another Q to sidetrack... and what if I want to put a 97 ZJ pair of D44s (front and rear) on one of my manches? Is that also a bolt on or am I getting myself in a mess? I just found them on Kijiji for good price.

I believe the D44 front is a D44 housing with D30 axles. Not really worth it unless you get a real good deal. If the ZJ is coil sprung all around, like I seem to remember it is, the rear will have to have a little work to bolt up to a leaf spring. As well as other crap that may or may not be in the way and might need to be cut off, like brackets for the 4 link and such.

But since I never actually looked underneath a ZJ, I don't know any of this for sure.

What about a Grand Wagoneer front Dana 44 paired with a mid 90s Isuzu Rodeo rear Dana 44? The Rodeo/Amigo axle is the same width and rim bolt pattern as the GW front, and comes with 4.10 or 4.30 gears and disk brakes.

I have heard rumor that mid 90s ford exploder rears pretty much bolt on... true or false? I rarely see Isuzu Rodeos or any Isuzu vehicles around here... Most of the Wagoneers I have seen are passenger drop and I need the driver side pumpkin...

Some years (I think the later ones) of Wagoneers are drivers drop.

95-01 are the best Explorer axles. They have disk brakes, can be found with 4.10 gears, and match the Jeep Dana 30 front axle in width and rim bolt pattern. Earlier years are pretty much the same, but have drums.

As to them being "bolt-in", only Comanche rear axles are truly bolt-in. All other axles will require new perches welded on. And pretty much all rear axles take the same amount of effort to install. It's the front axle that's tricky.

Try car-part.com for junkyard searching.
