2.5 AX5/AX15 swap?

Recommended Posts

It's still a Jeep AX15 tranny you use, but you need a late model Dodge bellhousing of some sort. You also need a specific pilot bearing that matches the ID of the 2.5 flywheel and the OD of the '15 input shaft.

Bookmark and study the HUGE thread about it over on Pirate for specifics. This project is on my wish list to do, sometime down the road :D

I have a nice ZJ 4.0L you could stick in with an AX-15.. in Indianapolis.

Why would you put an AX-15 behind the 2.5? Keep in mind this is coming from a 2.5/AX5/AtlasII guy... jamminz.gif

just curious...

I know just a few that has lost 5th gear behind the 2.5 that don't even offroad. Leads me to believe I want to keep 5th.

I didn't say the engine didn't matter (lord knows an AX-5 wouldn't last long if you could bolt it behind a 4.0). Manual transmissions simply don't absord shock loads like autos can and big tires or popping-the-clutch-at-high-rpm can send enormous stresses through the entire drivetrain, eventually finding the weak link. Hard wheeling and/or big tires have taken many an AX-5 to the scrap bin.

Safe, easy driving (along with proper maintenance) can keep even weak tranmissions alive (like the Peugeot). I read a while back about a guy drag-racing his tiny Geo metro with a souped-up twin-turbo 700+ hp engine, and running that power though the STOCK transmission. I bet he's very careful when he shifts. :brows:
