does anybody know if theres an adjustment for the shift fork shafts?, because trans is stuck in second gear and when you try to shift into other gears it locks up and it stays in second even when the shifter is in the neutral position

Sure is. Unless it's a 4 speed, then it's an AX-4.

 

There's no adjustment. You're going to need to open it up and see if the pin for the 1st/2nd collar thinger is broke. I'm guessing that's what happened.

If I remember, that "plug" is for the reverse idler gear. If you pull it things will drop in to the bottom of the trans :doh:

Nope, the idler gear sits on a shaft that's attached to the midplate. It cannot fall off. From what I could see with the case off, that plug does pretty much nothing.

So the plug that says "don't remove" doesn't do anything in particular? A Jeep practical joke maybe? :clapping:

it's the fill plug....

 

but I guess the engineers figured that noone would ever think about changing the gearbox fluid :nuts:

 

I don't use that plug to fill, too much of a PITA for me. Just pull the shifter and fill it from the top. Take that plug out, and when fluid starts draining from it put it back in.

The fill plug is a large hex head bolt on the other side,located under a wire. Thanks Brent for looking up part#.

 

that is not the fill plug. the fill plug is on the front half of the case. on the driver's side, mid-way down an between the bellhousing and the mid-plate.

 

you can't fill from that back one. it should actually hold a detent if I'm remembering correctly, and even if it does not, you would fill it too low and no lube would get on the main shaft. it would also take awhile to let the oil soak through from the rear case through the bearings into the front case.

It doesn't need to. There's at least one oil passage on the bottom of the midplate.

Big enough. Also, the midplate layshaft bearing is not sealed, plenty of area in that for oil to run through.

 

Also shown that the reverse idler would have to push pass the layshaft gears for 3rd and 2nd to fall off.

I know where the fill plug is,thats not the question,it's funny in the Haynes book it says its on the driver side but the(AX 5) drawing clearly points to the pasenger side fill plug.

Yea, Haynes and Chilton only give some vague info but it's better than nothing (most of the time). The cast iron mid plate is sealed to trans with Orange permatex type sealer,can I use Ultra Black RTV ??? or what is recomended?

There are 2 plugs on the AX-5. The fill is on one side for 4x4 and on the other for 4x2. This trans was originally designed for Toyota Corollas, Coronas and pickups.

I'm taking the trans apart ,Tail(Adaptor housing) is off,bell housing off, front bearing retainer and 4-snap rings off.Trying to separate case from Intermediate plate but it only moved 1/8" .I can see some broken parts in botom of case but it seems to be hanging up on one of the front bearings.Are the bearings suposed to come off first??? or are holes in case made to slide bearings through???. In the Chilton book it looks like they slide through once all snap rings are off. :wall:

I have the bearing retainer cover off and already removed four snap rings one from each of two shafts, one from around each bearing.Are the holes that the bearings fit into the same diameter all the way through??? If they are then the case should slide off over the bearings but for some reason it only moved 1/8" then got caught or stuck on something.:hmm:
