4.7 V8 in a MJ...

Recommended Posts

Got a very good deal on a Jeep 4,7 L V8 incl transmission/transfer and all electronics, fuelpump, instruments and ignition switch....only 19k miles.

To late to regret...it's already shipped.

Target: into the Comanche

I already have the FSM for the MJ (not -87 but -88 ), and for sure I will need the FSM covering the 4,7L, especially the wiring diagrams.

Sure I will keep you updated, but it will take some time before I start the rebuilding.

I’m starting to build a new house this summer , which will take all my spare time…and the MJ is an excellent ‘building truck’, transporting things here and there, during the house building project.

I’m collecting parts at the moment, so fare I have 10” rims, Bushwacker Flares, Skyjacker 3" lift w/nitro shocks and the new engine/trans investment…everything that’s make me happy is for me an investment :-)

I'm lifted 2" and I had to use Skyjacker 5" lift shocks, but those were hydros. Might wanna check the length on em, but the 0-2" and 3-4" were too short.

Awesome plan on the whole thing. Mind if I ask how much you paid?

I would change the t-case out for a NP231, or a flipped d300, since you have it all apart. Also I have found that it is relatively easy to pull the motor, trany and t-case out as one unit, if you have one of those fancy engine leveling things.

I would check with painless wiring, and see if they offer a harness, and computer to do this swap. Might be pricey, but I am sure it would be easier then trying to hack to harnesses together

The shocks I have is n8016 and n8018, in case they will be too short I can use the on the XJ, they soon need to be replaced.

I paid $ 2 200 incl. shipping, it’s a fair price her in Norway.

I think I will go for the 242 T-case, it’s perfect for winter conditions, although it’s not as strong as the 231.

I know the wiring will be a challenge, but I’m not too concerned at the moment, and will do a lot of research before start up, and I’m prepared to meet many problems during the installation....but we don’t like bolt on’s …do we :-)

Tonight I did find the 4,7L Engine Wiring diagrams on the internet, and was able to download them, but a complete FSM will be needed.

I still think an aftermarket harness is the way to go, especially since you probrbaly won't need all the factory functions. Just my opinion though

As for the shocks.. I couldn't tell you if they would work we need more specs like how much lift, and what the compressed and extended legth is of them.

Very nice! That looks brand new. Can you tell me who makes the rims on your YJ? I like them

they look like american racing torque thrust D's. . .

maybe II's, but; I think D's.

Both are Very popular with the muscle car crowd.

There are a few people who have swapped this engine & trans setup in to jeeps, mostly TJs, since the wiring should be similar. There isn't an aftermarket harness made for this engine, you have to use the factory harness. I looked into doing this in my YJ, but decided not to.

Hi guys,

As MySonsComanche says, the YJ rims are American Racing.

I know the wiring will be a challenge, but I think (hope) it will be doable.

yj2mj, do you have any info/links covering the V8 swap into a TJ ?

Holy Frozen Creampuffs Batman! He's pulling the engine from Wonder Woman's Invisible Boat!

He,he…did this trailer to haul the HD.

The first person that comes to mind is Fred Perry, who owns Clemson 4wd. His latest jeep is running this combo. I don't think there is a whole lot of info on the web about these conversions, but I think Fred would be happy to help answer any questions.

Thanks for the info yj2mj, my plan is to put the V8/5-speed auto (545RFE) into the MJ, and swap the existing MJ AW4 into the YJ.

An other option is to put the V8/545RFE in the YJ and replace the MJ Renix with the YJ SC 4.0, what do you think?

Pull the motor and the YJ and buy another MJ. Heh-heh.

He,he..the YJ have been a good reliable Jeep, and the no top/no doors alternative is for me priceless, I have also spent so much time and money in it, it have become a part of me...I 'love' the little 'hated' YJ 8)

It's powerful as well...

But the V8 will go into the MJ, but it's always good to have back-up plans :-)
