ROADLESS
Big junks out of the ring gear, man how did that happen?
DirtyComanche
Well, things got a little iffy because my rear D/S got f'd. Then I got slightly bound up in 4Lo, well, Front 2Lo basically, and she just gave up the ghost... Kinda like "CLANK, clank clank clank clank"
ROADLESS
Sorry to hear that. After a closer look, it looks like the pinion got dinged too. How did the locker fair?
DirtyComanche
The pinion is messed, it's hard to see in the pic. I took most of a tooth off of it. Near as I can tell the truetrac is sitting there going 'Stupid R&P, why do you have to be so kitty" I'm gonna pull it out and check. Then sell it. 87manche
that sucks. What kinda axle is that a D44? I nearly had the same experience when my pinion nut came loose. Apparently it's bad if your pinion moves 1/2"
Bounty Hunter
Looks like a D30
pingpong
Looks like a D30 That would be my guess :dunno: Hey you could have been like me, and bought Chromo's, just to have them break  Thats why I say loc-rites, or lincoln locker for d-30's cheap and easy to buy replacement parts for, and you don't have to reset up gears for them :smart: Sorry about your bad luck though. Whats going in its place a d-60 or a HP44
DirtyComanche
Not sure. I've got a 76 Ford HPD44 that I can get for a reasonable deal. Then I'd cut it down and run waggy axle shafts. It's oddly enough already got chevy outers with the 6 bolt pattern. But I'd have to regear it, as it has 3.54s or some $#!&. I was hoping to find one with 4.10s and then just lincoln lock it and call it good. It's that or fullwidths and 1-tons. The local yard has a lot of D60s, front/rear. I could get them in 4:10 stock without an issue. Maybe even deeper. Just it's kinda stupid to run 1-tons for 35s. Then I'd have to buy 40's, eh? Oh, and the pocket book might hurt on that. I've still got to check the pick'n'pull and see if it's got anything I can work with.
Pete M
I'd run a Hi-Pin 60 with 35s. :D Nay-sayers be damned!
DirtyComanche
Well, I guess I could do it and if I get hung up on everything just get bgigger tires... Mhmm
Pete M
Hung up?!? Just hit it harder! :brows: What are you going to do, break it? That's a busted 60 shaft and a busted 70 shaft. The 60 supposedly happened right after this pic was snapped, the 70 broke 50 ft later. Those are 37s and I believe the dodge is running a 5.9L. DirtyComanche
Was that a factory dodge D60? If so, yeah, they're only about as strong as an older D44...
Oizarod115
ive heard even the new D44 in the some wrangler packages are basically 35s with upgraded shafts. dinky versions of their predecessor. true or no?
DirtyComanche
It's an upgraded D30. It's a D30 with a LPD44 centre section. They're horrible overpriced $#!&.
Cooter
LOL- that is a late Dodge D60, shafts are garbage, and it is a disconnect housing. Also, and extra 3K lb of truck and a heavy right foot in a no-go situation w/a V8 seem to help breakage. (Who would still hammer it after breaking the front axle?)
pingpong
(Who would still hammer it after breaking the front axle?) I did at Paragon when I had no spare shaft abd ab hour to get outof the park
feerocknok
'Stupid R&P, why do you have to be so kitty" Tough break. At pic-n-pulls isn't the price of one axle the same as the next? I'd say go big, but if you don't go stock, you'll have to get your control arms and everything on the new axle.
DirtyComanche
I got a F250 HD HPD44 housing and outers. Sucker has 1/2" tubes! Outers are machined for high-steer, and I might be getting the arms for free or close to it. It will be narrowed to run waggy shafts, which I will get tomorrow. Then I will have to decide if I'm gonna keep it 8-lug or go to 6 or ford 5. Ford 5 makes the most sense, I think. Oh, and I have to track down a R&P and carrier. pingpong
If you want, I can trade you a set of 5.5 5 lug hubs, for those 8 lug hubs :deal: I have a HP 44 out of a 1/2 ton that I could swap right in, and with the 8 lug 60 I have I would be almost ready to put my crap on some 38's after I add some chromo's Just let me know. BTW the hubs I have are brand new, never even had tires on them yet
DirtyComanche
I'm actually doing the "fullwidths or not" debate right now. I could just leave it fullwidth and get a truck 8.8 and put my disk brakes on it and sell the explorer 8.8 and spacers. Then I'd not need adapters. Or I could get a real rear (60FF) and not have to convert the front from 8 lug. Pat, if I decide to go 5-bolt we can try to work something out. Shipping is a b*@$£ though. Pete M
Fullwidths RULE!!
DirtyComanche
Your axles are say 67" wide? Hmm. I probably should just save myself the hassel and go fullwidth.
DirtyComanche
Actually, F-150 8.8s are weaker, eh? They're only 29 spline instead of 32 or some jazz. Hmm, I might have to run a 60 rear. Tits.
Pete M
Huh? :???: F-150 8.8s are 31 spline, just like the Explorer 8.8. Or you could go with an truck 9" and get the highpinion 3rd member from truehi9.com That's my plan. :D
