  1. I think the little yellow box is for delay wipers. Do you have delay wipers? the yellow box is cruise, no matter what way you look at it. if you have the yellow box and no cc, your steering column was replaced, or the knee board was replaced with one from an xj and the yellow box wasn't removed. or someone was halfway through puttin cruise on it and didn't finish. the cc wiper box is attached to the lower lip of the knee-board via velcro and plugs directly in-between the wiper wires coming from the steering column and the wires going to the wiper motor. if you ever want wiper-delay or switch to a different column that has them, simply get the delay box that goes with the column. it plugs right in. and the velcro is there already so it's an easy switch. but the yellow box is cruise, and there are NO other possibilities regarding that.
  2. I'd like to know how similar the new style (97 on up) cherokee doors are to the comanche doors. i'm not looking to replace my doors as they're already painted, but what I was wondering is can the guts off a newer style xj door be put in my stock mj door with no fab-work? I like the 1 piece window, and i'm dying to have the sleaker, power mirrors, also the power windows and even the door panels and such.
  3. I have a moroso inline fller system in my MJ but I have a 3800 camaro engine in it. same principal, but I have a bleeder screw built into my engine. you can do it trust me, it's not as bad as you would think. here's a link to the rest of the project if you'd care to look. http://www.comancheclub.com/forums/view ... highlight= I'm putting a 3.4 camaro engine in my other 86, and with fuel injection as well.
  4. OK, so does anyone know about diagnosing AW-4 symptoms? here's what happened. he was driving it, then it went into 1st then just nothing. no sound. just stopped working. now it just sits and seems like it's in neutral, you can rev it but it isn't doing anything. so does it sound like a torque converter, the t.c. solenoid, or what? the tranny PCM? it doesn't seem like this is a symptom of a bad tranny so much as a bad torque converter or something along those lines.
  5. did the waggy springs bolt right in, or did you have to make new mounts for them?
  6. I'm gonna be frank here, we've built the Jeep to be functional and unique. I posted pictures thinking people would like to see something that was a bit different, and maybe even get a bit inspired by it- which is great if it does that. I appreciate the fact that you really like the design of the bed, but I honestly can't say I'm terribly interested in the idea an identical copy of it floating around somewhere; that really just takes the whole 'uniqueness' concept and throws it under the bus as far as I'm concerned. At the point you seem to basically be looking for an AutoCAD version of it, I'm feeling like my bed may not remain too unique for too long. If you really want to have something like it, that's cool- its your truck. The pictures posted show the basic body lines for your reference. ;) Thinking outside of the box isn't that tough to do, you just need to be willing to give it a go. Best of luck building your bed. well put
  7. Thanks for the help, i got the tranny payed for i just have to go get it, gettin the computer for free. i'll just swap it and then be done. oh, i'm selling the thing when i've finished replacing that. we don't need it here, it gets worse gas mileage than my MJ 3.8 so i don't really want it all that much i just figure i can make a few bucks :D
  8. I'm honestly not worried about the bolt-up. heck, i know i could put an ax-15 in it easily if i wanted. what i'm worried about is the electronic aspect of it, since they're computer controlled. any insight on that?
  9. my dad has a 2.1 renault, and trust me, you are right. but they do have power and are different. Rquarte, don't even worry about the Renault. you won't find one, and if you do it's a wild card and you'll probably never see it again.
  10. it would have been easier to put the rear tips of a comanche box on the thing...but then, where do you find ANY good comanche box parts. and as for people who can do body work, it isn't all that hard to fabricate the pieces to fill a panel like that, given the right equipment. it's all the finishing work...(being good at welding, sanding, smoothing, and painting is not very common).
  11. yes, i've done it with my brother's MJ when we built the OHC into it and mounted the CB and Radar up there. you'll need the shorter visors and their clips and screws to do it. the 3 outer bolts line up no problem, bolt them in and line them up so that the ends are located in a straight line with the old mj visor clips, hook the shorty clips up to the new visors, and trace where you want it with a black marker (headliner should probably be out just cause you need to drill). then get a bit that's the next size or a couple sizes smaller than the screw you're using on the new clips, mark the center of the hole with a black marker and then a punch. drill out the hole but be mindful of where the bit is...you do NOT want it to get to the end and just jump through, you'll dent out your roof and crack the paint there. then mount it all up with the screws and there ya go. pretty easy. an added benefit as well is that you now have the old visor clip location to use as a mounting point for your OHC.
  12. definitely go for an mj. You only will run into trouble on it if you buy an 86 with a 2.8 gm motor. DO NOT BUY A 2.8!!! those engines are not sufficient for a truck, and barely so for a fiero. The best engine option is the 4.0, followed by the 4-banger (i think there was the old Iron Duke gm and then late 80's was the chrysler...don't quote me on that though). and like they said, parts ARE available. even regarding tailgates, I own a couple extras and can get more, and I'm sure for the few, very few parts that are hard to get, members of the forum can offer suggestions or parts. good luck with your MJ search, just remember to get rid of all the rust before it leaves the shop!
  13. Hi, this is actually a cherokee question. my buddy has a 1995 jeep cherokee 2 dr with a 4.0 HO engine. his tranny blew the other day, and now he's done with the jeep scene...needs some money for a new car that gets gas mileage, and wants 1000 for his cherokee. My question is, does anyone know if the 1995 and 1996 auto trans. with overdrive for the 4.0 are the same? I would assume so, but sometimes things change. the reason i ask that is that I want to buy it and I can get a 1996 auto trans. for 100 bucks with 98,000 miles on it and all the 4wd parts needed. so would that work as a swap? any help would be hot. thanks
  14. perfect. Low range is about 2.6:1 plus another low range of 2.6:1 means with both t-cases in low range, the gearing is more like 6.76:1 Well that clears things up. I built a Cub Low-boy turf lawnmower for my pops and found a creeper gear for that, so i grasp the concept. just wanted to be sure, better to ask questions than to assume i'm right. Thanks Kassidy
  15. you guys are gonna HATE me when i ask this dumb question. what is the point of a dual T-case? It appears to me that the T-case only has the two driveshaft ends, and obviously it wouldn't be used for more than two axles. So I will assume that it is to have a creeper gear and a wider selection of low speeds in 4wd. is that correct?
  16. my main problem is gauges, no-tilt wheel + higher seats meant for me that i have to bend a little to view the temp and stuff. not an issue that much per-say, and i've gotten used to it. i LOVE my buckets. (but it would be nice to have the girl sittin RIGHT beside me.) so to solve that problem, use the bench center console and put a fold down arm rest/seat out of some other vehicle in it :P then show that pretty lady what jeeps are all about:P ..and put a tilt wheel in it. that's fairly simple and those types of parts are simply worthless to most junkyards...so probably cheap.
  17. completely agreed. i was thinking though, would it not be easier to get a shortbed mj and a 2dr xj, then chop the xj behind the seats, and the mj from the back of the cab back? the 1 thing is the frame rails wouldn't line up...but they would if you cut the xj frame short and retained the mj frame rails to the footwell, then melded it all together to create a cab and a half comanche with storage room behind the rear seats. and of course, then, power everything and all the options would be a must.
  18. I'm 6'1" and i find that the curved seats i have work great. the ones in m y bro's truck are really a non-issue....for him. he's 5'7" and his gf is even shorter so... but i like them. i don't wear a hat though so i'm all set. i did notice that the sun visors are kinda in the way when they're down now :(
  19. real nice John Q. so if you estimated how much the front header, lights, harness, and fenders were, how much would that be? i am VERY much interested in doing that conversion on my MJ.
  20. You missed the 1986 Renault 2.1 TD engine option, though you got it in 87 :D. there are some around, though not many. my dad is lucky enough to have found one...but unlucky enough to have a bad head and number 2 cylinder. ironically, on the same stroke, we found an OEM renault 2.1 long block for 150 dollars on a guy's trailer. If you want any information on the 2.1's, I can photocopy all of the documentation for options, the original order certificate, etc, and send you some pictures of the engine etc. it's got more balls than my 2.8 had. thank god i rectified that :D little tidbits, the 2.1 renaults were only offered in the comanche through 1987 as an option. that wasn't widely known, and the TD was another option on those engines. furthermore, the engine is very strange in nature (it is french after all). the cylinders are numbered backwards to typical 4-cylinders. i.e. the one nearest the firewall is #1, then #2 is the next forward and so on... also, the engine was made to bolt to the gm 60 degree bellhousing. so any ax5 tranny would work with one...with 1 exception. the splines on the input shaft are different for the renault clutch. so if you get it in your mind to do a conversion, and do find one to do the conversion, get the tranny even if it's bad. it'll save ya in the long run :D any more questions just ask, i know more than my fair share about the motor, as i've had them apart and back together now. :D
  21. I put seats with the curved "rocker action" into my mj. when i did it, I noticed that they were a little further outward than I would have liked, so I re-drilled the holes on the mj brackets about 1/4 inch inwards, then welded them up and bolted it all back in. works like a charm they DO sit high, but i like it alot more that way. more leg room, and with no sagging headliner headroom isn't a problem. put the same seats in my bro's 88 mj too, same way. worked great. problem with his is that the 1200 watt dual sub-ed sub box he built is too darned thick. so now head room is a non-issue, but leg-room is. he needs to cut it down in thickness by about 3 inches. problem with that is he made the box take up the whole back wall, recessed and mounted the amp. in it, and made each sub it's own air-tight chamber inside. sounds great, looks great, but cutting it down is gonna be hell.
  22. will do, but gotta crash now. and it performs great btw. the engine swap is complete, i've put close to 500 miles on it and it's getting 19 mpg on premium and 17 on regular....mind you i don't drive it very nicely :headpop: i have 3:73 gears and it spins the tires like a mofo. i just need a limited slip or locker rear end for it now. preferably a D44. the a/c is not hooked up do to an oversight in the contruction (engine mounts block the holes for the hoses on the compressor, so i have to custom make an adapter for them to angle 90 degrees rather than arc up. other than that, there is not a single problem with it :D oh, does anyone know about the ax15's that were in dodge dakota's with AMC 4-bangers? like what years they were in? those are 60 degree bellhousing pattern-ed engines, so i was thinking of putting one out of a dakota in mine to replace the ax5.
  23. this is the truck during the process, that's the new engine in the hoist. here's the camaro that the engine came out of more of it the engine while it was in the camaro this is the back of the car. used the duramax and tri-axle to haul it home from the junkyard. that's where i live in the bakground, and my shop to the right. the engine from the left the old engine. lettin it drain before i get rid of it one way or another.
  24. figured it out. this is the engine before i put it in, but after i rebuilt it. i DID have to redo the motor mounts, which is why they are not painted.
