  1. gah! :headpop: so i'm working on the tranny(ies) here...gosh darnit. the 2wd 4 speed I have is in GREAT shape mechanically. but, the 4wd 5 speed that I blew up last summer/fall is pretty much junk. i was going over it...i could have used everything on the main shaft, but there are some chips in a few gears, and warn down syncros in a few places. after figuring out how to get the c-clips off with the improper tools (my father is now working at a truck company building "custom" trucks so he's got all his tools) I had to press everything apart...geonovast's puller was good for 5th gear and unfortunately not much more. I got everything OFF the mainshaft (output shaft) for the 4wd tranny, both trannies are disassembled right now...i left the sliders in as i have no desire to mess with springs and balls and such. Now to press everything off the 2wd main shaft. then, I can clean the gears, select the best of them, and put them all back on the 4wd main shaft. once that's done, it's pretty much a cake-walk to get it back together. not too terrible. i just have to remember where about a gagillion parts go :brows: oh. i'm doing this twice by the way...i have a box where two MORE ax5's are sitting apart in from a few other rebuilds we've done (dad's diesel, and what's left of my original 3800 2wd trans). once I pull the tranny from the 3800, i'll try and salvage 5th gear and the output shafts and get everything built up with good bearings and such. ;) 8)
  2. Thanks guys for all the support. pretty sure I blew the front lay shaft bearing on this one....just like the last one. all gears are dead (by dead i mean crunching/grinding/etc and not moving) except for 4th works just fine. 4th is the only gear not running through the lay shaft...it connects the input to the output in a 1 to 1 ratio. anyways, on to rebuild a pair of trannies...thanks to geonovast for loaning me his gear puller. and I really do feel bad...wanted to get beaterjeep's truck done. oh, this is a good point too! i'll do the rear main, and redo my exhaust manifolds too while i'm at it (add a second joint to them so i can actually drop the tranny and do UCA's without yanking the manifold gaskets out...) haha. don't forget the frame break and dead mice on the heaterbox...

    CC Handles

mine was originally supposed to stand for jeepcomanche, but that was taken. then i tried jeepcom, and didn't like it. i fit the J in there to work it out. so it was SUPPOSED to be JeepcomJ but somehow i've turned into JeepCo with an MJ  makes sense now though....know anyone else who gets as many jeeps a year as me? ;) :brows:
  4. yea i'll do a writeup. i'm gonna have to find something trustworthy to use on it...i don't want any more rust on that truck (this is the last winter it will be driven in...and i only drove it for the past 2 tanks of gas in the winter thank god)
  5. k. how bout using that then flushing with water then flushing with brake clean?
  6. I'm trying to think of things i can pour into my cab corners to remove any stint of rust in there. i don't trust the "spray the rust and it'll convert" crap they're selling. oh, the paint is coming off down there when i replace the small chunk anyways, so IDC about paint for the bottom 7" of the truck. anyone think muriatic acid would work?
  7. yup :D IMHO, it's good they happened...gave him a chance to discover the rust spot and repair it.
  8. he's already built them...pics are somewhere in the thread.
  9. darn. i'd hoped it was on the OCHO :brows: hey, next time tell him to get ahold of me i'll find him an awesome comanche. hell, i'll let him build mine!
  10. use the force, mike :D
  11. I wrap the padding with a tarp first....but, that doesn't really work to great. I'd buy some sound deadener and just remove the stuff.
  12. the factory computers, both renix and HO, take 4 cranks for the CPS to read the positioning as 100% correct, and safe to fire. then because they've got locations right, the injection timing will be turned on in sync with the mechanical timing, and the motor will start. you'll have a delay no matter what you do. so something's not right with yours lengthwise, but it's not gonna start on the snap of a finger anyways.
  13. eesh. how much longer you doin that?
  14. subscribed to this thread (mentally) :D
  15. weeelll. finished the unit today. turned out well...now i just have to tape all the threads and put it together permanently, then mount it all in my truck it turned out pretty compact as well Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found i'll have to get an unloader valve at some point, and I'll throw a new pressure regulator in it soon as it arrives. tossed an old one on it for now...not even sure if it works. but. i'm happy with it so far.
  16. I'd take "the Unit" over ghostie.... how bout "the Member" hahaha
  17. if it were timing chain, it would CONSISTANTLY not run  rings, valve train. you've got a top end issue...i say rings. check your airbox. you probably need a rebuild or just a new motor.
  18. ANY compressor is better than none. i've painted with ours and it was OK...but i couldn't really do the whole car at once, a panel at a time was fine.
  19. I run two cheapo 20 gallons here...they suck compared to what that thing is. generally, craftsman is a good brand. it's a cheap compressor still, but I'd say a max. bid of $50-$70 and you'd have gotten a great deal.
  20. working on your oba, and typing on the 'puter. your a good multi-tasker :D ... ...and you took more snow with you after you cut across my grass  was i that far off the driveway? oops...
  21. yep. i'm actually working on it right now...i'm about done with the components, but don't want to bring the truck in the shop now that it's covered in snow...(i went to bed at 9am with no snow, woke up at 3pm with over a foot of snow)
  22. 7500+ i've got at least that into it, plus memories and it's my first father/son project with my dad. so with my truck, you're buying memories too....although frankly i's a very nice truck (until some POS backed into the bedside last fall...) none of you guys seem nuts for them prices...i mean, consider the fact that the buyer is buying a reconditioned vehicle which is as good as, or better than, new.
  23. i talk about my jeep then when people see it, it's like the buildup (anticipation) towards an awesome "jeep" just fell off the face of the earth. they go "that's a jeep?????" then i promptly b*tch slap them and put them in their place :brows: j/k...
  24. *sigh* the search here doesn't work too well...well, at least not for new members. I'm all for posting up...someone else is bound to know exactly the thread that has the rest of the info. as for the spring plates, get 'em from a junkyard, or take your ubolts and make a set so your ubolts fit in them (you'll need to slot the holes so that when you tighten them they can move inwards a bit). make sure you drill the holes wied enough that your leaf pack fits.
  25. it's been where it sits for a few years. I built a tow bumper that bolts on to the OEM bumper locations to tow jeeps home, but this one i'm having picked up...my dad is good friends with a salvage company (and he gets all of our scrap snowmobile chassis which are worth $$$ in aluminum for free) and he tows my stuff for $1 per mile. this will cost $20 for me to have towed...so it's not worth the effort to TRY and flat tow it.
