  1. she runs and drives now. turns out 5th/reverse sliderails are slightly bent, so 5th and reverse go in a bit stiff. other than that, it's all good. The blown transmission actually sheared all of the input shaft gear off, so it wouldn't run the cross shaft. I have those parts, so the rebuild won't be bad here she is loaded up for the trip home aaand building the new tranny here first one I blew up the one I combined it with parts thank god for the press the guts of it when it was done here's the "new" transmission. I didn't wire brush it...needed the truck running/driving, so getting it in was more important so, she's done and shifts better than ever. I had to redo my clutch systems too (new master and slave cylinder and such)
  2. now that's what i'm talkin bout! schweet!
  3. $300 when I got it with a blown tranny but minimal rust. $2000 for the paint job (regret every penny of that...i no longer trust body men) $350 for the wrecked camaro..... turn that $350 into around $1300 for the swap $450 for the first lift (3") $500 for the tires then all the little parts, the parts rig for 4x4, etc. a bunch of other little things over time. (there's almost 4,000 dollars lost in transit here) as of now, I have around $7500 into her all told now....and I'll have to dump more into paint and stripper so I can repair the bedside. plus I need new tires for when I drop the 6.5" lift in it. I had a complete tally at one point...but I don't really care any more. it's a money pit I know, and will continue to be so. I'm 21 in a little less than 2 weeks, and my dad and I built the original version of her in the fall of 2004...I didn't drive her until march 2005. thanks for the interest :D I'm loving comanches, every minute of them...Dad got me hooked with his 86 factory diesel...and eventually i found this great site (thanks Pete) -Pat
  4. common problem. the used one will probably have the same issue. it's best to just replace it with new parts.
  5. mechanical was the 2.8 in 86. 2.5 was electric fuel pump. maybe 84-85 xj 2.5 was mechanical, as it was carbeurated.
  6. I have 4 brand newish tires in my barn off of my bro's jeep. someone stabbed the tires...I fixed them (plugged) and they hold air. but that's about it. I wouldn't take them on highway, or use them as spares. they're just good to me to toss on a vehicle if it's gonna sit here awhile and I take the rims off it (nice alloys, etc). chances are that tire was punctured as a defect or something, I probably wouldn't use it.
  7. well, one is renix era and one's not. technically they have a "different" headset (head gasketry), but that's just because of the aluminum valve cover change. I'm thinking theyr'e the same
  8. anyone? I'm planning the rebuild this week, and I am searching...can't find much info tho.
  9. alright, I just picked up a 94 cherokee 2.5 5 speed 4wd for $200. overall it's in decent shape for a beater but... the engine is toast. all 4 cylinders are scored to $#!&. I could hone out 3 of them and fix that, but the 4th I'm not sure if I can do anything to save it. anyways, I have another 2.5 block laying in the shop...it's a good block, from an 87 or 88 something like that. it had a spun rod bearing so it's got a bad rod and crank unless i wanted to have those fixed. so, I'm wondering if the blocks are pretty much identical. can I just use the 94 gasket set? I'm going to swap the crank and one rod from the 94 into the other block, and rebuild it...I figure for $200 and another $150 worth of gaskets, rings, rod, and main bearings, I can't go wrong on a decent DD.
  10. well, i don't care...
  11. psh. who cares.
  12. he's keeping it a few more months then probably selling it to me if he hasn't started to work on it (he won't, he works too much) for a good price. it's got a factory willy's hydraulic plow, and the original stepside bed is in great shape except for the floors. it's in the shop. the bottom of the cab is rotted though, and he has new doors for it. I know where an FC170 is just sitting and rotting away....local junkyard. that's the one with the 12 foot long bed or whatever. it's not very nice either. and, remember $200 for the jeep :P
  13. anyone who wants that conversion, I know where 4 of these complete front ends are. I can't get the connectors for all of them though, but bumper to bumper and napa stock them, or can get them.

I've spent two days in a county jail. not that that's much, but that's two days more than I'd ever like to do. get your head on straight, and stop doing stupid stuff. one right doesn't counter 4 wrongs. and yes, I've learned from my mistakes.
  15. yes. you need the wagoneer headlamp connectors. other than that, you can do the mod with what you have there. I just cut out the connectors and fed them into the factory ones just in case i ever went back to stock. for the turn signals, grab a file and you can file out the wagoneer turn signals to fit your factory ones.
  16. parts on order. it'll cost me $350 all told to have it running and driving. I got it for $200 and it's sitting in my yard, clean and clear title :D

I think it's a shame that he's not appearing to learn from this. accept responsibility and man up buddy. yea you got off lightly, buty you COMPLETELY brushed aside the fact that you did something wrong, by jumping right back into these plans. what I read in this entire post was "I never screwed up at all, what are you talking about, those 4 suspensions were all flukes" that's not very mature. ANYONE who gets in trouble that much, is a troublemaker, and has done something to deserve it. the problem is, that they're all in denial. anyways, I hope that perhaps you can read this and take it from someone just 6 years older than you, that you need to learn from your mistakes. at 21, I've made ALOT of mistakes, and I've learned from them. I love my truck, so any threat of it being sould would have ended in an immediate stop on any stupid things I could've or would have done.
  18. another one. $250, it's a 94 4 cylinder 5 speed with a blown motor. needs a block...oh, wait, i got one! anyways, my buddy spotted it first so he's taking the 4.10 geared axles, and I'm gonna drop the axles from my 90 xj in it and the spare motor that came with my 86 as well. just gonna cost me a set of ujoints and a gasket, ring, main, and rod bearing set ($500 or less all told to get it going as a beater)
  19. SUCCESS! so far as I can tell, it's all in perfect working order. now to split the cases again, reseal them, then wire brush it down and paint it
  20. riight. here's the finished product. a bit of tweaking for smooth shifting on 5th and reverse, and it will work just fine. and the rest of the pics too works good so far as I can tell. just need to get the reverse lockout (so you can't bump from 5th to reverse) in it, and loosen up the 5th and reverse shift rod.
  21. yea I only put minimal grase in one spot...the input shaft needle bearings. that was just so they'd stay while I slid it over. I refilled the bearing with tranny lube (gear oil) and put the covers back on. tranny is almost back together...just have to do reverse idler, and the linkage for that. then just the 5th gear setup and I should be done inside.
  22. like this? :brows: that was my 89 that I sold to TNT. still have the brush guard, and entire grille...been thinking of putting it on the 3800
  23. I'm rebuilding my Ax5 transmission right now from 3 transmissions...I should be able to actually build 4 good 5 speed transmissions once I tear the junk one from my truck. anyways, I'm about to press on the main shaft midplate bearing, and I took it apart. I'm wondering if it's supposed to be packed with grease, or if it's supposed to be oiled. it is sealed on both sides so apparently it won't take in fluid from either side, or let it leak into the rear housing. anyone know this answer? -Pat
  24. *shrug* only other tranny worth putting in there IMO is the ax15. i'd need a dakota bellhousing though so that kinda scraps that idea. most of the problem has been that all the trannies have been used trannies. this time, while yes it is still used, I will have it rebuilt with as good of parts as I can (I am replacing the part that i find typically goes wrong....front cross-shaft bearing) I'm building this one, installing it in the truck, then building another one and building blockoff plates for it so it will stay in the back of my truck now, and be protected from the weather.
  25. gah! :headpop: on my way up to beaterjeep's place, my tranny blew up...the lay shaft main bearing went bad. so i waited overnight at the rest stop and got pickup...cost $200 all told to get home. so i'm working on the parts tranny(ies) here...gosh darnit. the 2wd 4 speed I have is in GREAT shape mechanically. but, the 4wd 5 speed that I blew up last summer/fall is pretty much junk. i was going over it...i could have used everything on the main shaft, but there are some chips in a few gears, and warn down syncros in a few places. after figuring out how to get the c-clips off with the improper tools (my father is now working at a truck company building "custom" trucks so he's got all his tools) I had to press everything apart...geonovast's puller was good for 5th gear and unfortunately not much more. I got everything OFF the mainshaft (output shaft) for the 4wd tranny, both trannies are disassembled right now...i left the sliders in as i have no desire to mess with springs and balls and such. Now to press everything off the 2wd main shaft. then, I can clean the gears, select the best of them, and put them all back on the 4wd main shaft. once that's done, it's pretty much a cake-walk to get it back together. not too terrible. i just have to remember where about a gagillion parts go :brows: oh. i'm doing this twice by the way...i have a box where two MORE ax5's are sitting apart in from a few other rebuilds we've done (dad's diesel, and what's left of my original 3800 2wd trans). once I pull the tranny from the 3800, i'll try and salvage 5th gear and the output shafts and get everything built up with good bearings and such. ;) 8)
