One thing on these trucks to check is the electrical ground My gas gauge was reading all over the place at various times. From horizontal below empty to past the full mark. A fresh ground to the firewall solved that problem. This may not be your problem, but something to remember about these trucks.

Grand Cherokee Tire Carrier
johnj92131 replied to johnj92131's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There is a good how to at MADXJ (www.madxj.com). It is under Tech articles- tires/wheels. Lots of pictures. Frankly, it is not usable for the MJ. You can not get to the inside of the bed wall to put the required supports in place. Also you would need to take the XJ bumper because it has lots of extra supports for the tire carrier. I saw a tire carrier on a Grand Cherokee that looked interesting. Will post pictures when I get home. -
Get the under hood sound pad and put it on the Commanche. Take a look at the rear view mirror.
-
So did you get to Riverside to see the Commanche? Not likely with all the rain. Frankly you have to be willing to go to L.A. Riverside, and Orange County to get a better choice. Most likely you should budget $3K and you will get something that does not need too much work. You are better off to pay for a better truck than to try and fix a cheap piece of junk.

Was at a yard Thursday. Saw a 94 Grand Cherokee with a swing away tire carrier. The carrier was mounted to the right end of the trailer hitch with a large bearing mounted on the rear bumper. The lock point for the tire carrier was attached to the tailgate. Looked like a factory kit. Anyone with a factory part number? This looked to be adaptable to a Comanche with a factory class three hitch. Will try to post pictures later.

Professional Jeep 2500 parts supplier from China
johnj92131 replied to Alex from China's topic in For Sale
I decided to ask Alex for his U.S. importer. Well I got a good answer from him. What, if anything would any of you like me to ask? I am on vacation till after New Year. After that I could investigate if you people want me to. The U.S. importer is not all that far away from my normal travels. Please feel free to tell me I am wasting my time. No problem. John -

Manual to Power Door Locks
johnj92131 replied to Fire4755's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well, found a 95 2 door XJ today with power windows and door locks. Plan on recovering it Sunday morning. Missing the driver side control, but looks like everything else is there. Let me know if you are interested in it. -
Yes... there was an OEM bed mat.

Matches my 91, but it is a bed liner. -
Manual to Power Door Locks
johnj92131 replied to Fire4755's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Not to be a jerk, but use the search function. There is lots of information here. I have done the conversion and I am still trying to work out all the little issues. I have a 2 door XJ switches and had issues with the 4 door cross body harness. Recently found a 2 door cross body harness so I will install that and power up the mirrors and the door locks. The easiest thing to do would be to make your own cross body harness. you will find instructions if you use the search function. -
Never liked the look of a roll bar on a street truck. Think you will have a hard time at $150. Why not search the for sale section. You should find a couple of old ads there with price information.

johnj92131 replied to mkbruin's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I also have the bed mat with the AMC logo right next to the word "Jeep" - right in the middle. Mine is a 1991 Big Ton package. Also have an original bed liner that says "Jeep Comanche". -
Not to whine (too much), but can you provide more specific information on the physical size of the Dakota tank? And just which Dakota did the tank come from? Meaning standard cab, club cab, quad cab, etc. My lady's son has a base Dakota, not sure of the year. Will check the physical size of his gas tank in the next couple of weeks. (early 2000?) Had looked at an early 90's Dakota 15 gal tank and tossed out that idea because the tank was too small as a replacement for my long bed. But I need to look hard at moving the muffler and fitting a second tank under the passenger side of the bed. Might be the best location/solution. Just use a stock Comanche tank on the other side. Turn the tank around (filler still on the drivers side), extend a filler pipe from the existing drivers side to reach the passenger side. Just use a switch/valve to change tanks. Use the factory fuel gauge for both tanks. Keep spare in stock location. Double driving range. Good excuse to buy headers at the same time. Just need to stop dumping $$ into the Passat for a little while. (after new clutch and bigger turbo). Then again, I don't use the truck for long trips, I use the diesel Passat wagon (8 to 1200 miles on one tank of fuel - my bladder does not last that long), the Rodeo 4 x 4 (to tow trailer - 300 miles between fills) or the Camry for a long trip (450 to 500 miles/tank). All of them are more comfortable than the Comanche for a trip of more than a couple hundred miles. JJ

So how about a link or some pictures? Did you use the TJ tank as a second tank?? if so where did you mount it. OK I found it! Here is the link: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=11834&start=240 Good information and nice pictures. You installed it in place of your original MJ tank on a short bed. Can you post more about the Dakota tank - I think it was on the small side and not used as a second tank. Am I right? Thanks
-
Do you have a long bed or a short bed? I have been toying with how to add a 2nd gas tank. Here are a couple of suggestions. With your spare in place, measure from the top of the tire to however close to the ground you are willing to have the tank hang. Then measure how wide the distance between the frame rails are. If you have a long bed, this will be difficult to do because of the huge Xbrace. You should post the measurements here and I am sure others will be able to suggest a tank that can fit. I am thinking that some shallow tanks from old Ford trucks or full size GM early 70' cars would be a possible fit. Some were just over 9 inches tall and from 18 to 25 gallons in size. Here is a link to a custom installation in a late model Jeep: http://www.jeepcommander.com/forums/sho ... php?t=7769 Some good ideas here. Like how to fill both tans from one filler. But the thread is 12 pages long.

AMC V-8 in an 86 MJ Any suggestions
johnj92131 replied to az86jeep's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You asked for suggestions: Look at the old Buick aluminum 215 V8. It was sold to Rover and used up until BMW purchased Rover. The late Rover can be punch out and a Buick 300 V8 crank can be used to stroke the Rover to over 300 cu. in. Weight on the engine is under 350 lbs. This Buick aluminum V8 was a popular Jeep swap in the 60's and 70's. Think the physical size of the engine is smaller than AMC, Ford, Chevy, or Mopar V8 As a bonus, you can use the Range Rover/Land Rover 4x4 drive train. -
Look for the 97 + outside mirrors. Larger and a better field of view. I have done that. Look at the 97 + door swap. Nice to get rid of the wing window. Have not done that. Second on the Laredo interior. Have done that. GM rear view mirror with map lights - Working on that. Grab the under dash lights from a Cherokee - the fit right in existing wiring.

Engine Technology
johnj92131 replied to Worlds Fastest Comanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I was looking at the HP numnbers for that engine, seem pretty low. What is the actual spec? Peter, Realize this response is a bit late, BUT you should check out this site for information on TDI engines. It is the top site in the world for TDI information - without any doubt. http://forums.tdiclub.com/ You will find people there who are reliably getting 200 h.p and very close to 400 lbs/ft out of modified 1.9 TDI engines and they can still return over 40 mpg on the street. BTW Peter, check your PM's for a note from me TDI in the subject. -
