  1. Jim, I could also be quite interested in this truck IF the VIN number indicates it is a real 86-87 diesel Comanche. That is the only way I can get it registered in California with a diesel engine. The rest of the missing parts can all be taken care of with some effort and some $$. Heck, this would even get me to get rid of my Hesco Aluminum head and all my stroker parts in the garage.
  2. Wish I could help, but.. have C.R.S. also.
  3. Jim, You and I are both getting old. Memory is the second thing to go! JFK was elected president in November, 1960, not 1962. And you have to admit, JFK had a much better WW2 war story than Nixon. Yes, we do pay a price for a free society.
  4. Amazon had a $100 coupon at the introduction of the GE Nighthawk LEDs. Would say Don got close to a steal. Or as he said a good deal. The TruckLite LED lamps were close to $500 each when they first came out and the beam pattern was not that great from what I read at the time. Don, no problem. Got your note that you had done some adjustments and the weather was crappy. I will be working in Sacramento for a week and then off to the Olympic Peninsula for a couple of weeks vacation. Likely will have more crappy weather than we get in a couple of years here in San Diego.
  5. How about the plug on the cluster? May want to try that if cleaning the ECU doesn't get the job done. All else fails, try a different tach. Think I have a couple of extras. If you want to borrow one, drop me a p.m.
  6. That makes a whole lot of sense. Just pull new wires and be done with it. Get new door speakers with tweeters, plug in to the original door speaker harness, run wires from door to rear speakers. Call it done. No cutting, no hacking. May as well order the new speakers from Crutchfield and be done with it. Now to check and see if any of my spare radios still work! If not, then tack the new radio on to the Crutchfield order.
  7. So perhaps you can tell me how the rear speakers are wired in? Is it a factory harness or just a home made harness. Also if factory harness, where is the connection made to the door speakers? And is the connection just striped wire to striped wire, solid to solid? Thanks for the assistance
  8. Might want to pull the in fender windshield washer tank also. It is a nice upgrade that gives you a bit less clutter in the engine compartment.
  9. I have been looking for the answer to the under dash tweeter issue for the last month or more. After lots of searching, here is what I have come up with: 1) Base model trucks do not have the factory installed wiring for the under dash tweeters or for the rear speakers. 2) the factory XJ's with the under dash tweeters have the plug for the tweeters spliced in to the speaker wires. That splice seems to have been done at the factory. I looked at 3 or 4 different XJs in recent junk yard expeditions and cut out a section of the speaker wires from one XJ to take home with me. So I have an example of the factory splice from both the left side and the right side. Both sides are identical. 3) As for the rear speakers. I have not found a junk yard Comanche with rear speakers yet. But my 86/87 parts book indicates there is a plug in harness extension from the kick panel area to the to the rear speakers. I have not seen one nor have I read about one. But it makes sense. 4) I do not know what impedance the factory door speakers were. I kind of "assume" 8 ohms, but I have seen cheap 4 ohm speakers offered for sale. Same for the rear speakers, The ones I have are not marked with impedance. Please share any of your findings. Very glad to see the information about the rear speaker grill being plastic welded in place. Saved me from damaging my grills.
  10. You should check the price for Hella E-Code lamps with H4 bulbs. That is Don's old set up. Not just H4, but real glass E-code Hella lamps. The Hella E-codes I got used for my 96 Passat were cheap at $400 for the pair and they don't have H4 bulbs. My point is that good, quality lighting is not cheap. If you want cheap, look at some C.R.A.P. (Chinese Replacement Auto Parts= C.R.A.P. ) knock offs. But the lighting will be junk. The beam pattern will be terrible.
  11. Not sure that you or I were ever required how to read a sundial. Nor am I sure how many of us could navigate by the stars at night. Even if we didn't live in big cities with so much light at night, we can barely see the stars. About 3 years ago, we had a huge blackout in San Diego, Orange and Imperial counties. It was really amazing to see all the stars we could see when the city lights were turned off. Just like being in the Sierra Nevada's. (huge mountain range along the eastern side of California for those not familiar with California geography.
  12. I "think" the undersize refers to the cranks. Meaning a .003 under bearing would be for a crank with .003 wear from a long hard life. But sometimes, when I "think" I find that is should not have done that (meaning "think").
  13. Look up "Monster Miata". Same Ford V8 conversion set up. Done by a place in San Diego County years ago.
  14. Algebra is all about solving problems. Are you telling us you didn't solve any problems on Wednesday Jim? Another way to look at Algebra: How much beer can I buy with the $xx in my pocket??
  15. Think the Nissan/Datsun Maxima had this same diesel engine in the early 80's. Not sure what transmission they used. Have seen 4 or 5 of the diesel Maxima's for sale on Craigslist over the last 6 months or so. Suspect the Jatco auto trans was just a 3 speed, but who knows it may have been a 4 speed auto. Something to look at if you have not done it by now. Should be a good runner once you rebuild it.
  16. Can anyone point me to pictures of the stock rear panel with the jack, lug nut wrench, etc in their stock place. Looking to see how the right and left edges fit into or under the stock B panel covers. Thanks,
  17. Reminds me of a fellow I used to work with years ago. He had a possum family living under his house in a wall. He just took his shotgun and fired into the wall a few times. Then he replaced the drywall. No more possum.
  18. Krylon has a line of plastic spray paint. Have not tried it myself, but others have spoken well of the paint. No clue about color matches. So my color advice is to leave that issue to the buyer. For you to try and match colors would lead to nobody being happy and way too much of your time down the drain.
  19. The huge advantage of the E Code lamps is the beam pattern. The fact that you can fit higher wattage bulbs is secondary. With just standard wattage bulbs, E Code lamps put more useful light on the road because of the beam pattern. E Code lamps are not DOT approved. They are designed and approved in Europe, hence the E Code name. The beam pattern is very sharply cut off to avoid blinding the on coming cars, but well focus down the road so the driver can see quite well. I have been using a set of E Codes on my Passat for 4 or 5 years now. The difference compared to the DOT approved lighting is huge. I would be very interested in a set of LED E Code lamps. Also looking forward to more pictures once Don gets his headlights properly adjusted.
  20. Just looking at the pictures - the E Codes are putting the light on the road further down the road than the LED lamps. Is that something you will be able to adjust with the LED lamps? I like the lower current draw with the LEDs, but just from these 4 pictures, I would want the Ecode light pattern if I were driving in a strange place. Looking forward to a further report on these LED lights.

  22. Kook911 I will buy a couple of pairs from you if you come up with your own file and print some for sale. I will pay you $30 for each pair. All I ask is that you record all the time you spend on the project and all the costs you shell out to make the first 2 pairs so you can earn $60. My point is you will spend a whole lot of time and effort and not be very well compensated at all. I have actually purchased bucket seats just to salvage a couple of special items, then put those parts on other seats to come up with a great looking and function set of bucket seats. If StrokerMJComanche gets orders and payment for 30 sets, I hope they print 50 sets, because they will sell just about all of them.
  23. Pizzatree, I got my Comanche as an extra vehicle. I use the truck about 3000 miles a year for all kinds of household stuff, but mostly going to Home Depot and taking stuff to the dump type of stuff. Getting the truck let me stop using the SUV for that kind of stuff. It also let me stop renting a trailer when ever I needed to haul something that would not fit in the SUV. So my Comanche is not a daily driver. If you are a homeowner, you know the value of having a truck around the house. So I would look very hard at getting a "family" car - Say a Honda Accord or a Toyota Camry for my daily driver and keep the truck. Anita drives a 2003 4 cylinder Camry, my son drives an89 Camry V6 that my father purchased new. Both incredibly reliable daily drivers. My SUV is a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo, used it for years to tow my camping trailer all over the western U.S. and Canada. My daily driver is a 96 VW Passat TDI. Have also taken it from San Diego to the east coast and back with no issues. Besides, it gets 45 plus mpg, day in and day out. So keep the truck for what it is and get another car for the family! Then keep the family car in good shape and drive it for years.
  24. I am in for a pair. Tell me where to PayPal the money.
  25. So what year Grand Cherokee did the radio come from? My old stock radio is crapping out. May as well replace it with the Grand Cherokee radio with a CD. Besides, I am seeing more Grand Cherokees in junk yards than Cherokees these days.
