That's Santa 1 - Timmy 0. Way to go, S.C.!
-
Thanks, Nori. Thought it should fit snug and be the smaller diameter material.
-
Don - How did you locate your leaks? Before pulling the whole system out I tried a sniffer and dye. The only obvious dye spot was on one tube of the evaporator. Saw a little dye in the bottom of the evaporator housing. The sniffer was inconclusive. Nori - I'll look for that specific o-ring set. My problem is determining which one goes where. Some of them are close in size (o-ring diameter and ring material thickness) and a couple I put in for my bench test came out "shaved". What is the fit criteria? How snug it is on the end of the tube? Should it be equal or smaller than the shoulder on the end of the tube? Also, the directions with the o-rings said to lubricate them and the threads with compressor oil. Some of my hose ends seemed to need thread lube to pull,up tight. I air tested the evaporator, condenser and hoses with air because I don't have a convenient source of CO2. I pulled all of the AC system from the truck and assembled it on a bench for the vacuum test. I have a new dryer receiver that Indidn't use for the bench test. I may have to put in all new or rebuilt components that are available. The problem is that I haven't been able to find an evaporator with provision for the temperature probe. I did find a used evaporator from a '91 XJ at a JY which didn't leak under pressure. I may just put in a pulley to eliminate the compressor and accumulate new components over the winter for a system rebuild next spring/summer.

Does anyone have a list of the AC system o-ring sizes specific to our MJs? I've bought 2 sets of the generic o-rings for R134a (one from Advance and one from Rock Auto) but some of the sizes don't look right. I've assembled the system with all new o-rings (including compressor isolation valves) and can't get a good vacuum to hold. Vacuum pump will pull it down to 1250 microns (27-28 Vacuum on gauges) but leaks back down within 2-3 minutes. I pressure tested the evaporator and condenser with 120 PSI air, submerged them and saw no bubbles. Hoses checked out good also. When I took some of the connections apart I found some o-rings were cut around the outside, indicating they may have been too large for the joint. How about some feedback, AC gurus?

Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow MJ junkies! And, you're a little late on that eating thing.

Is your latch missing? The colored part clips on to the body of the latch and could be re-used.

Assistance needs in the glove box department
Keyav8r replied to jdritchey98's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You might have solved this by now, but thought I'd share what I know. I have the dash out of my truck and just took a look at it to see if there is a way to reach the back side of the latch without removing the dash. It doesn't look like you can get to it through the radio opening. The glove box is molded plastic and fits closely against the firewall and heater/AC box. If you have the dash tilted back you might be able to reach in through a small rectangular opening in the back of the box with something and release the two pins of the latch that are designed to retract into the latch housing when you squeeze the buttons. The latch assembly is held in place by a "U" shaped clip on the inside of the door. If you have a JY nearby with '86 - '92 XJs, I agree with johnj92131 that you should go there and see how the latch works and if there is a door there you could use to replace yours if necessary. The glove box door (on my '91) is attached to the dash by a continuous "piano" hinge that is riveted to the dash and bolted to the door. There is a "catch" part that the latch mechanism locks into that is screwed to the top of the glove box, which also has the switch for the glove box light. I don't think you can force it open without damaging either the door or the dash, or both. The colored cover of the latch clips on and can be removed with a small screwdriver. That will expose the ends of the two levers that retract the pins when the buttons are squeezed. You might be able to move the levers and open the door at this point. If not, you could then remove the buttons and try again. If that doesn't work, you could carefully cut the rest of the outside part of the latch away with a Dremel and then it should fall (or be pushed) through and the door should open. If you can't pick up a replacement latch from the JY I'll send you a gray or tan one for $5 plus shipping. Since the colored part of the latch just clips on you might be able to reuse it. PM an e-mail address and I'll send you photos of the latch and clip, a partially disassembled latch and the inside of the glove box door with the latch installed (still technologically challenged and haven't mastered posting photos). -
California bashing? Not me! I really enjoyed my visits there (San Francisco and San Diego) and would like to return to Coronado for a week or so. However, wouldn't want to live there, or NYC, or Chicago, and a few others. I'm a Southern boy through and through and love Sweet Home Alabama! And I feel sure all you other folks love your home states as well.

Will be praying for his family and you.

To Cruiser54 - tell your friend thank you from me. That exposition stated clearly most, if not all, of the thoughts that have gone through my mind during the past eight years. Gogmorgo - I'm assuming you developed your characterization of Donald Trump and his policies from mainstream media, whose bias toward the Democratic candidate was so obvious it was a continuing theme in European political commentary cartoons. In fact, the bulk of your first sentence sounds like it was taken directly from a Hillary Clinton speech (with the exception that you left out Islamophobic). I've watched a lot of Trump's press conferences, rallies and speeches and have yet to hear him advocate violence against anyone except Islamic terrorists. He certainly has strongly advocated prosecution of certain people or groups of people because of their criminal activity, not their ethnicity. What, you ask, about his stance on illegal aliens and the wall? Ask yourself what Canada's policy is about the issue of illegal immigration. Donald Trump, and the majority of US citizens, welcome all immigrants who enter the country legally, work toward citizenship and live peacefully with their neighbors. Ask yourself if you saw any reports of demonstrations or rioting when Obama was elected to his first and second terms. Did you see any media coverage of groups of Republicans marching in the streets, fighting with police and vandalizing personal and public property? Why not? Because, in spite of your un-deserved and unwelcome characterization of US conservative voters, we live by the law of the land and don't throw temper tantrums when we don't get our way. We in the the US have lived for almost eight years under an administration and political party that has deliberately fostered racial discord, class warfare, unconstitutional policies, and governmental persecution via the IRS of individuals and groups whose personal beliefs clashed with the social engineering and political correctness of the Obama administration All of which was done to push the nation toward socialism. And, if any objected to any of the regal decrees and unconstitutionally supported Presidential orders, they were immediately pilloried and labeled with the whole string of invective spewed out in your opening statement. So, if you want to criticize someone for creating an atmosphere of pent up frustrationracial tension, and a demand for social change, look at the Socialist Demcrat Party that just lost the election.

Thanks for the response, but OH is a little farther than I want to travel.

Signed in on my iPad. Tried several times to ign out with the "Sign Out" button. Still signed in. Did a power off on the iPad, tried to sign out several more times, still signed in. The blue bar rolls across the top of the screen, but doesn't sign out. Suggestions?

With deep respect and gratitude, I salute all those who are serving and have served in all branches of our military forces - those alive, those who have passed on, and those who gave all. You are appreciated and your sacrifices are honored by a grateful people. God bless you and our nation.

Well spoken, Gogmorgo! Bravo!

Looking for one in good condition, preferably not too far away. Jeep logo would be a nice bonus!

We keep hearing about people (usually "celebrities") who will leave the country if (insert Republican candidate name) wins the election (didn't leave when Bush was elected, doubt they will now - just trying to get a little more publicity). Now it's rumored that a state (or a portion of the populace) wants to exit the union and join Canada because their choice lost. We had a contentious primary and presidential election cycle with plenty of nastiness from all parties involved. The people voted, the electoral system worked as it should, and the loser conceded. Now we have people protesting, rioting and vandalizing property because they don't like the candidate who was elected. My views - (a) spoiled children throwing a temper tantrum because they didn't get their way, (b) vandalizing is not a legitimate form of protest, it's a crime, © if you don't like the way the election turned out, put on your big boy and big girl panties and deal with your emotions - you'll have another shot to get your way in 4 years, and (d) if you really want to leave, go. A lot of conservatives and Republicans were not pleased with the outcome of the previous two presidential elections but they did not resort to public demonstrations of their displeasure. They respected the will of the electorate, kept their faith in the US election process, respected the peaceful transfer of executive power, and got on with their lives. Some policies may change, but the US will still be the beacon of freedom and the rights of all will be respected and protected. That's my opinion. You have a right to have a different opinion. We all have a responsibility to respect the rights and property of others, freedom of speech, and the will of the people of our nation even if our political preferences are different.
-
Personally I'm pleased with the way things turned out, given the choice we had. Do I think the two candidates were the best of their respective parties? No. I think there were others on both sides who had more to offer, but they didn't make the cut. Bottom line, it is what it is. Trump got the electoral votes, Clinton conceded, we move forward and hope for healing and unity as a nation.

Broken belt in tire. Still happens. Do you ever notice a little twitch in the rear or through the steering wheel during a slow roll. You can spot a broken belt by jacking the truck up and spinning the wheel by hand (in the front) or letting the rears turn over at idle in 1st gear (may have to add a little parking brake drag to keep them from spinning too fast. You'll spot the break by a sudden shift in the tread pattern as the tire rolls. Also, watch for out of round tires. Broken belt can give you a rhythmic thumping noise at speed.

What Gomorgo said. And, what the split loom doesn't cover - black electrical tape. -
Thanks for the info. That will be my next project - after I finish my AC repair, and get my gas gauge working right, and ...............

On a side note to this topic - does anyone have a recommendation on a good source for LED replacements for the incandescent lamps in our trucks? I'm talking about taillights, brake lights, back-up lights, front/rear turn signals and side markers. eBay and Amazon have a lot of choices with prices all over the board, but I want to find a quality product source with more knowledge on the subject than just a cross-over chart.

Don't think I have a black one but have several gray ones if you're interested.

You have a very good eye for Comanches. I can barely make it out in the enlargement.

Went the JY route. Got an evaporator from a 91 XJ with the hole for the thermostat, thermocouple thingy, and the thingy even though someone had cut the wires instead of disconnecting at the connector. Got all four hoses and they look better than mine. Also got a whole gasket in good condition for the blower motor where it fits through the firewall. I'll pressure test everything and return any bad parts for "store credit". Total cost $75. New parts (if I could find the correct evaporator) would have been around $200. A little soap, water and elbow grease and they'll look like, well, used (but working) parts. I also found a neat little cover that fits over the vacuum solenoids in the passenger footwell. And, of course, got all the associated fasteners, including the plastic inserts in the header panel for the screws that attach the grille. A couple of mine have oversized screws in them that will be corrected when I put the front end back on. I'm pretty sure the re-assembly will take much longer than the tear down.
