Looking For Advice -Wisdom On 2.8 /4.0 Swap
mpace6a replied to banjobill80's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Also important that ive been balls deep in a 5.9 and a 97 5.9 ram is my substitute dd while the mj is down. plus i want to add some horses to the 5.9 and stick with a manual trans. autos are lazy horsepower robbing slushboxes. -
Hear good things about the speedglas hoods. Really like the savephace hoods though. Extremely lightweight, and the 180* field of view is pretty nice. Replacement filters are expensive though, since theyre curved. I ended up ordering from cyberweld.com, $0.50 cheaper with free shipping. So far so good, and if it gets here tomorrow as expected it'll be 4 business day shipping. no complaints so far. Will update once hood is in my possession and let you know quality and such.

Stock ZJ mounts bolt right in with a couple new holes being drilled. I had to make some drop brackets to lower the engine 1 1/2" or so. Look through the Black Betty build in the projects section for some pics.Wonder if thats the same for the 5.9?Probably end up having to make my own...i want to add a couple more horses before i put it in anyway... The 5.2 and 5.9 have the same mounts. It's the same block. Get a nice running ZJ as a donor. Then let the wrenches fly.Actually been leaning towards a ram with a 4x4 5spd because id prefer a standard over an auto, and to date ive seen one 5.9 zj on craigslist. any big benifits to using a zj donor over a ram? -
We have a heater like the one in your first post in our breakroom at work. Its tiny, like 12x15 tops, but it heats it up pretty well. As for heat, got a detached 4 car garage thats a big enough to hold 4 full size trucks with a storage loft above it, and we heat it with a wood stove. Stays nice and warm, and more than once has gotten warm enough we were working outside in t shirts while its sub-freezing outside. Theres an art to using wood for heat, and if you know it its well worth it, IMO. Although, i enjoy splitting wood by hand, too, so thats in my favor.

Thats what I plan on doing. Was orignally looking at putting a 4.0 in my 86 to replace the 2.8 but seemed like a lot of work. Can put in a 5.9 for equal or less work and have more power, so why not? -
SMS makes the whole thing, backer and all. Great guy to work with! Originally had a flaw in his design, fixed it and shipped the new ones out to everyone who had purchased a flawed one for free! I didnt even ask for a new one since i made mine fit, so it suprised me when a new one showed up on my front porch about 2 weeks later!

Those are the sexiest seats I have ever seen

I paid 1000 for mine with a bad motor and big intentions. Mainly because the body was really straight, came with an extra 4.0, extra turdy-five rear axle...nice black interior, blah blah. Even with the 2.8 in it i won't sell it. I'll consider a partial trade of $10,000 and another MJ...but won't sell it.

This really wouldnt suprise me. Or even jim having a 155mm cannon sitting in a barn somewhere. On this subject, i have seen a setup where a guy rigged up a semi-auto 12ga shotgun under his hood. removed the stock, extended mag, yadda yadda. Used a trunk latch solenoid to work the trigger. Obviously not legal, and i in no way accept any responsibility for anyone dumb enough to attempt to set this up on their vehicle. Still...rather genius i must say. That's called a southern security system hahaha. Close....more for road range when the darn prius won't get outta the way. THIS is a redneck security system

Dear god... not this thing again hahahaha. I still think this thing is the perfect candidate for an armored urban assault MJ! Just remove the spoiler and crap and replace any steel plating with tempered armor plating!

There's at least two cloth buckets. Idk if mjs were ever offered with leathers but there's those too

Purely for lowering egts makes since...especially since said cousin lives in Denver. there's a guy on youtube with a second gen cummins that consistently runs 9sec qtr miles. Iirc he has to use nos just to spool his turbo, which sounds like a jet engine winding up

Well it rained a bit yesterday, then got up in the 90s so all dried up. Figuring out why my transmission decided to unbolt itself from the crossmember (I'm blaming the mud) and then digging!

High Fuel Economy Engine Swap Options?
mpace6a replied to Oyaji's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
 They managed to make a Kia soul uglier! -
My limited knowledge is coming from my cousin. Hes been builđing an 01 cummins for a while now. Hes getting somewhere in the high 900hp/1800ft/lbs power range with over 100psi of boost.

. It is a better example, but I have trouble putting much faith in quantitative statements by that guy after I read stuff like this from him: when asked the weight of his Grand Cherokee: "I would guess around 5700lbs" (Wiki puts the GC at 3,574 pounds - so that means he replaced the ~550 pound I-6 with a 2,700 pound I4 diesel? *lol*) . when challenged about his fuel economy: "That was what the mpg display was showing, but based on math I have been getting about 21mpg city and highway." (Incidentally, all the electronic fuel economy readings I have seen are based on injector pulse width signal from the ECU, so I am wondering how he uses this on a mechanical injection engine that doesn't have an ECU.) . His qualitative statements I have less trouble with, because they are based on simple observation - but I think he is mod-happy and that his ideas for mods are not sound (like doubling his power with fuel pump mods. and adding cooling with methanol injection):. . "Now that I have her running I am going to start adjusting the fuel to see if i can get a little more power and get a little higher rpm. Right now I max out at about 2200 I know I can safely go up to 2800rpm. I am able to get on the highway and hit 75mph it just takes a minute to get to that speed." . "Also I have a guy that rebuilds pumps and a injectors and he thinks he can hot rod my pump and get me another 80hp which should put me at 165hp, this engine is just a little underpowered for this jeep, around town its great but going up the mountains it struggles to stay over 50mph." . "Does 70mph no problem. Only weakness thus far it going up the mountain, can keep it at 60 but that's at 2500rpm and she does start to get real hot, I'm thinking methanol injection will be a good solution to this." . . He's got problems alright, but I think most of them could be corrected by regearing The way I understand it, water/methanol injection, if done properly of course, will help with cooling and add a bit of power to the engine. How much of either, I have no clue, although the way i understand it is that you inject a water/methanol mixture into the cylinder between firing strokes to cool down the cylinder walls, keeping the engine running cooler and, to some degree keeping the air in the cylinder denser since its cooler. Makes some sense i theory, although, in my head at least, not enough to make a huge difference?

Anyone ever buy from weldersource.com? Need a new hood..old one is pretty rough, not that it was nice to begin with. Being the cheap arse that I am, was browsing amazon, somehow ended up here, found a miller hood advertised on amazon for $300 for only 72 here. Thoughts?

Said he wrapped a strap around a tree and hooked to his recievher. All his story mind you, but he said even with all his frame stiffening it was still a really sketchy recovery

Buddy of mine had one on his built xj. Claims to have used it to help get a track ho out of a ditch when the wall collapsed
