'86 Xls Fuel Sending Unit
Comanche_Fanatic replied to Comanche_Fanatic's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
still looking for the internal fuel filter, no luck. I'm starting to consider putting a double external fuel filter system in, one under the hood and one under the chassis. ill have to make a screen for the sending unit if i can't locate one. so far I havent considered ordering the new sending unit yet because I have a strong feeling that the bad ground ins on the sending unit itself, I'm in the process of repairing all the wires and ground systems. the float i can do nothing with cept spray eletrictal cleaner and strengethen the connector. I hate going 'redneck' styles when i fix jeeps but somethings gotta be done! -
'86 Xls Fuel Sending Unit
Comanche_Fanatic replied to Comanche_Fanatic's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
great! now that we have located the sendingunit, any news on the internal fuel filter? -
My fuel gauge isnt working properly, a full tank of gas will read 1/4 on the gauge. I dropped the gas tank and looked at the float/sending unit. the wires inside seem to be bad and I'd like a replacement as well as the in-tank filter. Problem is, where could i even locate one. Stealership doesnt have it, Advance autos doesnt have it, I'm afraid that the next one i walk into wouldnt even know what it is. they keep saying its a fuel pump (as if) and its not a pump at all, just a little rod to the filter, with 2 wires leading to the float. confirming it has an external mechanical fuel pump. which is what i don't need. can anyone help me locate one? Ive got a short time window to get the jeep running again.

Yes I'm aware of all the mods needed to do the swap. I'm more concerned with the exhaust system really, cause its going to be different from stock. I hope i get a 4.0, but a 2.5 works fine, theyre strong motors still. Not many 4x4 manuals left out there. Hope i find one soon, 2 cylinders on the 2.8 are toast n its running on 4 now.

Ive got a '86 MJ XLS 4x4 and the chevy motor and auto trans in it is a POS, I need to change out both of them and put in a reliable Inline motor (2.5L, 4.0L, or 4.2L ) along with a 5spd manual trans and the clutch system as well. It has to be 4x4 compatiable cause I don't have the long driveshaft. If you have what I'm looking for let me know ASAP, thanks. P.S. I'm in the Middle Georgia area.

2.8L Manual Trans?
Comanche_Fanatic replied to Comanche_Fanatic's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I may have to cancel that, I'm gonna try and switch out the motor as well. -
86 was the first year they made the manches and it had the 2.8L chevy motor in it. Next year it was subbed with the 4.0L inline six by AMC Why? Was the chevy motor $#!&?

Project Franklin
Comanche_Fanatic replied to Comanche_Fanatic's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
The trucks still running, not very well, there seems to be leaks and rescrictions in the exhaust system so i had it checked out. Everything points to a damaged muffler, apparently it collasped and has been worked on, catbacks gone, i wonder why.. A new muffler was $50 at the parts store and it didnt even meet pipe specifications.. I decided to go straight pipes, it was much cheaper. Now it runs smoother -
Keep it, i own a '12 compass, payments and insurance are a pain in the @$$. My mj is cheaper. Why not get a personal loan to fix the mj, monthlys cheaper

I'm new to the 2.8 V6 motors. I don't know of this carburetor is stock, it appears to be a weber. There are a few connectors near it and nowhere to hook it up to. If anyone knows please share

I just bought a '86 MJ XLS 4x4 with the 2.8L chevy V6 and torqueflite trans, including well kept interior, bucket seats, a/c and heat, radio, etc. all for $500 At first i wanted to plan on putting in a stroked 4.0L and a shaved head, along with the AX15 5-spd and NP242 Transfercase. But after driving 85mph back home for 5 hours, on the highway with such a little motor and getting 17mpg, yeah no bull, i said 17mpg at 85mph. I think ill keep this motor. Its already strong and good gas, i can improve it as it sits. There won't be a lift, or big tires, or any of that. This will be a slowly restored stock MJ. To me it feels like a classic car, i don't wanna get rid of that feel. Theres already a list of things i have to do first before restoration. Fix Lighting system Fix Front steering Alignment Rebuild/adjust carburetor Engine tune up Replace Rear main seal Fix Mirrors
