  1. I want some front speakers in my MJ, but not in the doors since I want them removable. What have you done? What are your ideas??
  2. My MJ wants to have THIS MJ's babies.....  http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=940424 Image Not Found
  3. Did you get a high pinion 30, or low pinion? YJ gears work in high pinion 30 axles, TJs are low pinion. They do not interchange. Brett and Jeff? (JawzJPCustoms?) True enough on the D30...wasn't thinking. And...no....
  4. I am starting to think about keeping the 2.5, but doing an AX15 swap using a Dakota bellhousing and building a 231 doubler, 8.8 4:10 rear and regearing the front to 4:10. I know a lot of TJ/YJ guys with Dana 30 4:10 sets laying around. I have a freind works in a fab shop, so we can probably make the doubler. The 2.5 is not so much what I worry about. It is the strength of the AX4/5 for serious wheeling. The AX15 will put up with ANYTHING a 2.5 can throw at it. I am looking mostly for durability and reliability, and if I gear the HECK out of my drivetrain, and upgrade it, I think I can do fine with fewer mods and less money spent. Also, the 2.5 has only 79k miles and lots of life left in it. Final Drive Ratio: Up to 115.75 to 1 on 33's  And I would be at 65 MPH in 5th at 2150 RPM. Thoughts?
  5. Welcome...at least it is nice LOOKING.... :dunno: I too have been considering a drivetrain swap...I just cannot settle on WHAT!
  6. I only lean away from the 4.0 because I would have to do enough mods anyway, why not go bigger and better?
  7. Too cheap to even have it mailed if you ask me....just my $.02
  8. I would try the sending unit. They fail often. They are cheap enough, but make sure you buy the sending unit, not the switch, since you've got the gauge.
  9. So, I got my 1987 MJ, have done a 4WD swap, but I don't think I will ever be happy with the 2.5L/AX4 combo in it and plan on doing a drivetrain swap next summer. I am torn between a lot of options....so I ask this: What is your suggestion for a drivetrain swap to achieve the following: Good torque Good highway handling decent mileage COST (I am not a rich man, so it cannot be too wild) Ease of install (I am not afraid of fab work, but I want easy wiring, simplicity of completion like a TBI system, I do NOT want carbureted). The 4BT engine management simplicity does draw me, but it's finding one.... Then picking up an NV4500/Dana 300 to finish it off....I would expect the cost to get high. I also have looked at the simplicity of a SBC with TBI, the availability and shear awesomeness of the Muncie tranny's (SM420/465)...the costs are much less, but I am concerned with too touchy a throttle, which the SM420 7.2:1 granny gear could help with. SO, what are your thoughts? And don't just make a suggestion, if you can, tell me what you know about the swap. Thanks Jim
  10. http://cleveland.craigslist.org/cto/2084165583.html Nice looking MJ!
  11. Ok I have done it a half dozen times....never use spring compressors. And if you DO unbolt the control arms, the easiest was to get them back on is using a BIG pipe wrench on the axle tube to turn the axle to the right angle to seat the control arms.
  12. Type of tranny please?
  13. I managed to get donor parts from friends....built the front axle with parts from 3 people (shell with gears from one, bearings from another, rotors and calipers from another). I have a large network of Jeep people I am part of, and run a local website for Unibody Jeeps so I have some connections. I then got a trashed AX5 and rebuilt it using my 2wd AX4...the AX5 came with the 231. Cut down the rear driveshaft myself All I spent money on was the fittings to adapt the clutch, u-joints, and fluids. I now have a 4WD Comanche with a rebuilt AX4 4WD tranny I created. It was my first tranny rebuild and was very rewarding, and I thank JeepcoMJ for all his input and helpful advice during the rebuild.
  14. Wow....I worked my butt off is what I did. Finished rebuilding my AX4...first time effort and it did NOT come without it's pitfalls. I shattered my cluster gear bearing, but was able to build a new one with parts I had. Once I got the whole shebang reassembled, I reinstalled everything into the MJ. The Purple People Eater is now OFFICIALLY a 4x4 a MAY make it's debut in December. This was a very rewarding challenge. I now know how to rebuild manual transmissions which is a major plus!

  16. I would use off the shelf GL5 75-90. Advance Brand...non synthetic. It IS a dana 35 after all. I have used generic 75-90 in axles with ZERO issues for years and you will have beer money left over.
  17. So I got everything done. I eliminated 5th gear, since I don't need it and everything in the AX5 was toast. I used all the AX4 gears on the AX5 shaft and reassembled all the shift rails and shafts onto the midplate and got the shift box reinstalled. I am having REAL trouble though, putting the gear box back over the main and output shafts. I can get the large bearing started in it's hole, but the smaller bearing seems off just a hair, but enough to prevent it sliding into the housing/case. I tried to press it together and roached a bearing (luckily I had another). Is there a trick to this? This is all I have left to reassemble to put my truck back together. Thanks for all your help so far.
  18. Thanks Marcel, I knew you had the number....
  19. 2 things: 1) Yes you can put a 1 piece shaft in and block off the flange on the axle. The control arm mounts on the disco axles are actually stronger. But you will need an inner seal installed to do so....I know there are right ups out there...it is an $8 NAPA part, but I don't have the part number. 2) Even though you locked it, it is still a week point. A one piece shaft is inherently stronger. The axles HAVE to have the same gearing if you are going to SWAP. but not to just replace the shaft. Also, the ZJ shaft may have CV joints which are no good for wheeling. Hope that helps.
  20. This is actually common for a vehicle stored for that long in a non-climate controlled storage space. It is from condensation from the concrete that seeps up onto the suspension parts. Also, often you will start to see some engine problems (hope you don't) from engine seals and what not becoming brittle from non use, as well as hydraulic components (trust me, I bought a similar MJ with 79K miles). Just some things to look out fro from a stored vehicle. The important part is that the frame and body are rust free...the rest can be restored/replaced easily. Welcome and good find.
  21. You will need an AX4 or AX5 from a 4WD. The NP231 from an XJ will work...the front Dana 30 will if it is the same gearing, as well as the front driveshaft. You will have to cut down your current driveshaft. Hope this helps get you started.
  22. Welcome....from Cleveland (well Lorain).... Check out the links in my signature for some local stuff!!
  23. 1) 4wd AX15 2) NP231 or 242 3) Dana 30 for the front 4) Front Drive shaft 5) Clutch conversion components (if going from internal to external or vise versa...just for the lines) 6) Shorten rear driveshaft 7) Shifter for 4wd 8) Pop out internal plate in interior and console to allow the 4wd shifter and install shifter and linkage to the 231/242. DONE It is actually a very simple procedure. I just got done doing this to mine. Good luck!
  24. My EVENTUAL plan is an SBC or 4.3 with the SM420 Muncie behind it, go with the married NP205 Passenger side drop to a Chevy 10 bolt front. A man can dream....
