We financed our home through a USDA loan. Absolutely great program, no private mortgage insurance. If you're looking in the Western Maryland area, send me a message, I can keep my eyes open for you for any decent buys in the area.

Biting the Bullet ... Time for Historic Tags
beepbeepmyredjeep replied to beepbeepmyredjeep's topic in The Pub
I don't remember the exact price, but I believe it will drop my tags and insurance by at least 50%. Historic tags requirements in MD are that the vehicle is for "occasional use". As far as driving once per week, technically I could drive it as much as I want, but if I pass the same cop 5 days in a row with historic tags, he's going to ticket me for using my truck as a daily driver. And I pass the same cop almost every day on the way to work, so no way to hide it. -
Well, I've decided it's time for my MJ to get historic tags, and become an "occasional use" vehicle. The vehicle recently failed the emissions tests, which apparently recently changed in Maryland. In previous years, the truck was put through a "treadmill" with a large pipe connected to the tailpipe, and a fan blowing to keep the engine from overheating. My little 4 cylinder has always been way below the limit for emissions requirements. This year, when I had the truck tested, I had to sit in the truck without a treadmill, and actually rev the engine up and hold it at a high rev speed for close to a minute. No fan blowing to keep the engine cool, nothing. My vehicle then failed because the emissions were too low. The computer claims I have an exhaust leak. I suspect that the new test system is not properly calibrated for older vehicles to be putting out lower emissions than it expects, so it automatically fails them. Instead of fighting the system, I'm going to give up, throw in the towel, and take my MJ off the road as a daily driver... It will now get to drive once a week with historic tags. This is a good thing for my MJ really...it will never again have to brave winter roads and face our favorite rust causing salt. Since I don't have a garage, can anyone recommend to me a good truck cover I can use to protect my MJ when I'm parking it for extended periods? ...The good news in all this is that with my recent job switch, I'm now making enough money to purchase a brand new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited...and I already got the wife to sign off on it!

I'm hoping to bring the "fleet" to next year's PA Jeeps show.

My MJ just failed emissions testing, because my readings were too low. Wha??? Here's the apparent reason which I found online: Sample dilution failure The CO + CO2 measurement was less than 6%, indicating that a valid exhaust sample could not be taken from the vehicle. The vehicle has leaks in the exhaust system or improper engine adjustments. Now, that makes sense now that I've read it. I'm not upset because it failed, I had a feeling it might, because it's been sitting for a while. However, what truly ticks me off is the "trained technician"'s knowledge of how their system works, or lack thereof. First off, I should have known I was in trouble when the guy in front of my yelled out "This place is such a F***ing joke" as he drove off... He handed me the report which states my emissions are below the state standards, but failed due to a dilution failure. I asked him what exactly caused it to fail. "I don't know" So, I ask him who would know. "Your mechanic." :fs1: So, I'm starting to get a little mad. I ask him "Well, is there anyone here who would know?" He calls over the customer service representative. I ask him what it means. "Oh, you have an exhaust leak". I ask him how the computer knows that. His answer? "I don't know. Sorry." Wow, really? You're supposed to be trained on how to use this expensive equipment, and you don't even know how it works? Needless to say, I told him I agreed with the guy in front of me, and left. I will be calling and filing a complaint with the Maryland VEIP program tomorrow, and inform them that their technicians are untrained, and do not even understand the results of the tests they are running. If they don't know how the stuff works, how will they ever recognize if equipment is malfunctioning or providing false readings?

This information is 100% accurate and is NOT to be disputed. No no, I'm not disputing it. I'd like to know where it came from. If I can get a newspaper or other source, I'll add it to the Comanche History timeline.

Wait....whaaaaa? Where'd you get this info from?

Been a while since I posted here. Been really busy lately... Here's what I've been up to... 1) Started a new job in Martinsburg, WV. Job is closer to home, and gave me a 30% pay raise! 2) DiscountAuto.tk is starting to take off! So far since I've opened the site in March, I've had over 1,000 visitors. I've made only a few commissions, but I'm not complaining, since the site is so new. 3) The MJ is almost road worthy again. I had to take it to a friend to drop the transmission and replace the clutch. I've got an emissions test coming up, which means once again the MJ is under threat of possibly having historic tags, and no longer being my daily driver. In any case, I'm hoping to take care of the rust spots this summer, and repaint the entire truck. Keep on Jeepin'!

I've tried to clean it up a little bit. It's pretty overwhelming how uncited the entire page is.
