  1. Late reply, but I wanted to share what I was told about this particular issue. Before I bought my used one, I called a transmission shop in Va. and spoke with the owner. This guy has many, many years as a tranny builder. First thing he tells me is, "You won't want me to rebuild that transmission." He tells me that the AW4 has evolved a lot over the years and that the old ones just aren't in demand anymore. That's part of it. The other part is that the 80's AW4 is a complicated trans to rebuild, so the labor really adds up. His price was high at $2500, but I'm sure it would have been done right had I done it. Hope this helps.
  2. I figured as much. I wouldn't ask you a "money" question in an open forum. However, how often do you see the AM/FM only decks?
  3. Very cool! Also cool that one guy created ALL the drawings!
  4. Appreciate the replies. However, what I was really wondering is, can you just slide the seat off the rails? Like in older VWs. where you can just hold the under-seat adjuster and slide the whole seat off and out of the car. I was thinking that the age and simplicity of the bench seat may let it happen. I couldn't find a lever that would release the seat. Looks like the replies here suggest it's not so easy.
  5. I've read the posts about removing the bench, rails/sliders and all. However, can I just remove the seat and leave the sliders in? Just I can get under the dash easier? I can't seem too find that option, but it must be possible.
  6. Awesome! :rock on: Thanks for all the replies! Should be able to fix this now!
  7. Yeah, I decided that I would go the used route. @75sv1, I did call B&T, but their trans was still in the vehicle, so I went with Stewart's Salvage in Stony Point. $200, 30 day warranty. Picked it up today. Thanks to those who chimed-in!
  8. Thanks for chiming in. I have a column shift.
  9. So lower section of dash should be off?
  10. Hey, my 88 Renix era auto shift marker has suddenly stopped lining up with the correct letter. I saw a similar post from a while back on this, but it really didn't address my current issue. I'm wondering why it's off and how to fix it. Thanks
  11. My trans is crapping out. I've been calling and searching for options, but I keep wimping out on pulling the trigger because I don't want to get ripped off, again. 88 MJ, Auto, 4wd, 4.0 AW4. Used $200 and up. 30 Day warranty. Very often the mileage is unknown. Actual internal condition is not known. Rebuild what i have for $1300 and up. OUCH! Quality varies. Warranties vary. Reman for HOLY SH#T!!! Decent warranty though. Advance Auto through Moveras offers a reman for maybe $1800. Not sure on price. Apparently, AA has to call Moveras and they have the current price. Like ordering fresh seafood or something? Then there's Car Monkeys. I can get a used and tested tranny for $789.99 shipped to my mechanic with a 5 year warranty. Sounds like a deal, but I have no experience with them. And Low Mileage Parts offers used and tested with a 5 year warranty shipped to my mechanic for $469.99? However, lots a bad reviews for these guys. Any advice, experience, etc. Would be helpful. Thanks
  12. Minuit, A related, but different, question about the stereo arena. What is your opinion on aftermarket antennas? I live in a mountainous area and my FM reception is, well, it sucks! I know that my geography cannot be improved, but I wonder if any of the carbon fiber, aluminum, short, rubber or "amplified" antennas actually work.
  13. That was going to be one of my questions. Do you resell or just collect? You answered that one. So, do you sell based on requests? What model years are factory fit? Lastly, I'm looking to go to stock appearance, however, I do not need a working tape. Just the unit with the best FM receiver, one that can be modified to accept an aux input and an amp added. Sorry for my sarcasm earlier. I never seem to learn that it's not something that is apparent in text.
  14. This post reminds me. At 8pm on March 31, 2017, the stock radio in my 88 went missing. It was in okay shape. The tape didn't work quite right and the first two radio station presets were pretty worn . . . Hey!
  15. Thanks! I'm all-for not having to do things!
  16. Was soooo excited to see this, but, DANG! I have a hard time justifying the cost. Not so much the part, even though it is grossly over-priced, but $9 bucks to ship a lightweight and small piece of plastic? Are they driving over and installing it too? I already have a lathe and for $6 bucks I can buy enough Delrin to make enough of these to last a lifetime. This is a tough one. I sure would like tighter steering, but at what cost? Do Comanche Club members get a discount?
  17. Was poking around my I6 engine compartment yesterday and noticed this white line not connected. Maybe it's not supposed to be connected, but I don't know. Any thoughts on this line? http://i.imgur.com/kl0cm49.jpg
  18. We'll I was wrong. He does not have a transmission to match the case. He's asking $150 for the case. Is that typical? And, if can get a transfer case and tyranny for $300, is that a good deal?
  19. Okay, Cruiser54 school me. The guy has a couple of trannys. He has a 2wd that is in good shape, however, it's my understanding that you cannot convert 2wd to 4wd, so that's not an option. He has a 90 that stopped working. the mechanic said it was a bad pump? IDK what that means as a potential donor. He has a 95 too. That one can work if I swap the transfer case too, correct? Is it that easy-peasy? Yes it is. Forget the one with the bad pump. Install the trans and transfer case. Sell your old transfer case on craigslist and your old tranny to a trans shop as a core for $25 to $50. Alright. He has a transfer case. I'm out of my element here. What should look for in a used case and how much should I pay for a 90s case?

  21. Surely, this is the one he is looking at- https://boone.craigslist.org/pts/6019005508.html The seller doesn't even know what year it is. But, for $150...........your core on a rebuilt will be that.........or..........$150 for a 23 spline TC...............you are still at $300 for a trans/TC combo. OP, go look at it, count the spline. Nope. Not that one. Although I did contact that guy and it won't work. It's newer than 90.
  22. Thanks. Right, but I thought they changed that midway thru 90. I'm wondering if I'm right about that and if there is a number or code on the exterior of the Cherokee that confirms it.
  23. So I have found a trans that I think/hope I can use for my 88. It's in a 90 Cherokee. I know the trans were changed during that model year. How can I tell if the spline count is correct without opening the case?
  24. Anybody try one of these yet? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chrome-Cruise-Control-Windshield-Wiper-Arm-Lever-Switch-for-Chevy-Truck-Pontiac-/370838431819?fits=Year%3A1988%7CMake%3AJeep%7CModel%3AComanche%7CSubmodel%3APioneer%7CEngine+-+Liter_Display%3A4.0L&hash=item5657b1684b:g:CVAAAOSwtfhYpsWL&vxp=mtr
