I got my Comanche for free because of a wiring problem. The connector to the CPS was corroded so it would not start. A little contact cleaner and a wire brush and she fired right up even with the 2yr old gas in the tank!

88 MJ come with power steering?
88SporTruck replied to drase's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My 88 2.5L has a serpentine and PS but no AC. -
MY MJ has some cheesy looking mirror mounted right in the middle of the window on the drivers side and a blank plate where the mirror should go like on a XJ. I'm 6'3" so its absoloutely useless to me as I have to crouch down to see into it. The passenger side has the same corner mounted spring loaded folding mirror as my 93 XJ. Will XJ mirrors bolt up if I remove this blank cover? The mirror that is on the drivers side is now is loose and wobbling and the paint around it is gone and the door is rusting. I have owned cars with only a drivers mirror and nothing on the pass side but I thought it was a law to have one on the drivers side? The doors are original so it appears someone removed the factory mirror and put this POS in the middle of the door. The MJ was a municipal town vehicle with a 2 way radio and roof strobe so I'm thinking someone didnt like the stock mirror and replaced it. :wall:

When I got my 88 it would not start at all. Turns out the connector on the CPS harness had gotten wet and was corroded. I took it apart and used some CRC electrical cleaner and a small wire brush and cleaned it up good. Truck fired up on the first crank after that. Just something to look into.

Engine starting to get a lifter Knock
88SporTruck replied to conan1977's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
MMO helped my XJ's 4.0 lifter tap quite a bit. Didn't make it stop completely but with 230k on it I expect it to make some noise........ -
EPIC! Everyone laughed at me when I said railroad track would make a good bumper........Amtrak might get a lil pissy tho if they find some track missing........ Too bad all the old railroad lines have been converted to hiking trails and don't allow any vehicles.....

CT is the same way except you cannot go into the yard at all. The employees have to pull all the parts. You are not even allowed to go look at the car before they pull the part. This makes the JY useless for any small or obscure parts as the flunkie pulling the parts only knows what his book tells him and that book only covers common parts not small things like interior lights or trim pieces.

What metal for patch panels
88SporTruck replied to jimoshel's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Please tell me your not hacking up these old classics just for sheet metal patches! Old appliances work if your on a budget but even virgin sheet metal is not really expensive at all  -

cut the shaft with an angle grinder and pull it out the top if possible. Youll be done in 5 minutes or less. If you can't pull a long shaft out the top then hold it with vise grips and undo the nut. If your trashing the shock it won't matter how bad you mess up the shaft trying to grip it.

Whoever spec'd those plastic valve covers should be shot. mine is cracked around the bolt holes in several places and was puking oil all over the manifolds. some washers and a new gasket have cured it for now but a replacement metal one is going to be necessary.

any commanche thats basically whole for a hundred bucks is a no brainer! Grab it up.

Swapping Gears....?
88SporTruck replied to ComancheKid45's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
D35 gears that have had the pinion yoke sheared off? RUN don not walk RUN away from that one. Take the front gears if they are free and in good shape but those rears are basically scrap. -
I had a feeling that the tube on the tranny was some kind of bleeder. Thanks for confirming it! After the oil change and valve cover gasket I removed and scrubbed out the throttle body as it was absoloutely caked with black deposits. Now she fires right on the first or second crank and idles like a champ! Now its on to the exhaust. The system on there now is possibly the worst piece of ghetto rigging I have ever seen. A few of the welds on the joints are over 1" thick gobs! Luckily the cat looks like it was recently replaced and was only tacked on so I can reuse that and the downpipe but everything else looks like swiss cheese and has to be replaced. Now if only NAPA will get it together and stop giving me the wrong parts (oil filter and exhaust donut gasket) Maybe I can have the truck ready for paint by spring!

Sounds like there is a break in the main power or ground wire coming off the battery. Replace them. They are not very expensive.

The 1626 DOES NOT fit. Not even remotely close. It is twice the diameter of the fram I pulled off. Currently I'm running a wix on it not the fram anymore. Is it possible that the oil filter adapter was changed? It looked like part of the block casting and not removable. Hell nothing on this truck surprises me anymore.....Today I found what looks like a piece of brake line with a quick connect fitting on it sticking out the side of the transmission (AX4) The clutch works great and it shifts just fine so I don't have a clue what it might be. I'm going to be tear into it some more tomorrow and ill get some pics and the model number of the filter that I found that fits. Also the threads on the oil pan look fine. I'm not sure why someone stuck this jacked up drain plug in there....

Cherry Bomb/Glasspack OR Flowmaster
88SporTruck replied to jeeplover88's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm gonna try a Glasspack off a 56 Corvette and have it dump in front of the rear tire. -
Today I went to change the oil on my new to me 88. The first surprise was that the exhaust pipe was mashed into the drain plug requiring me to remove the whole damn exhaust system. ( it needed to go due to rust anyways). The second surprise was some whack @$$ drain plug that has a loop in it you stick a screwdriver through to loosen it and it has a T shaped piece on it that prevents it from coming fully out of the oil pan causing oil to spew like a fountain because it hits the dangling plug when draining. Also Napa gave me the wrong filter! It had an old Fram ph3387A filter on it and the one they gave me was 2x the size as what was on there and had threads so big they wouldnt even contact the threaded stud on the filter adapter, but their computer said it was correct for my year and engine. The ph3387A also fits my 3.1L Grand Am, It seems odd that a GM oil filter would fit an AMC engine........Oh and who decided to make the damn valve cover out of plastic?!?! If I ever meet that engineer I'm gonna kick him in the nuts. So....has anyone run into a drain plug like this? Can it be easily removed and replaced with a normal one because i freakin hate the fact that it won't come fully out and it makes a otherwise normal oil change into a huge messy spray of dirty oil.

Beer pong with the mailman FTW!

Maintenance Required Light?
88SporTruck replied to Jeepcom23's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The PO of my Comanche had tried in vain to color over the light with black sharpie to make it go away! I removed the bulb and used it to replace my burned out "BRAKE" lamp (which now stays on constantly due to a bad ebrake switch) and I removed the module and mounting bracket and threw them away. Problem solved permanently.
