Brake rotor fitment, 1990 MJ
jimoshel replied to 135Boom's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Eagle: So when is your book coming out? I believe I would like a copy.Jim -
Yeah. That was about as bad as calling anything with 4WD a Jeep.
-
OOOOPS. Dodge ram 1500.
-
My GF won't ride in my J20 because it's old, dirty an smelly. I did not crack one smile when I used it to pull her '08 Ramcharger 4WD out of the snow drift she buried it in. So it's not a MJ but I had to tell somebody.

How to find the GVW of a Jeep P/U
jimoshel replied to jimoshel's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
YEP ! Gotta lay off the JD when I'm tryin to be technical. -
Place a peice of regular bond paper, no toilet or newsprint or light cardboard, over the axle and under the frame. Start loading the box. When the paper cannot be moved without tearing throw on another 100 lbs. That's the vehicle gross wt load. :chillin:

The one '89 is a short box with 44, 2.5 and AX15. The other 3 are long boxes with 4.0 and AX15. And my reason for wanting to know is because I just like to know what I've got. Jim

Is there a sure fire way to ID the metric tonne package? Seems I read someplace, thot it was here but can't find it, that they had 4 leaves as compared to 3. However all 4 of my MJ'S have 4 leafs. one '88 and one '89 has Dana 44's original. One '89 has 44's been added. and one '88 has the Dana 35. Would think the GVW label would say but it's illegible. The VIN for the '89's give the GVW but not metric.

how do i get truck specs?
jimoshel replied to STERLING STINGER's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The only thing the VIN will tell you is what engine and tranny was in it when it left the factiory. After several years and PO'S no telling what any of them could have altered. Those info labels on the door and door jambs are a joke.6 months and they become illegible. The only way to positively ID anything is to look at it, often requiring cleaning, scrapeing crud from any tags, stampings. Any good Chilton or Haynes manual can help ID them. Personally I think Chilton's is a little better when it comes to ID info. Also if your planning on doing any serious work yourself I suggest getting a Factory Service Manual. -
If it was standard issue, the tranny was a AISIN 5spd and the rear end was a Dana 35.However on special order the Dana 44 could be under it.

I wouldn't know. I don't have any rusty bumpers to contend with. -
Need help fixing up a Comanche
jimoshel replied to TTREB4's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Not necessary. You've got a 'dry motor' there. You want to get some oil on the cylinder walls. and other moving parts.Just spinning it over will do that. -
Need help fixing up a Comanche
jimoshel replied to TTREB4's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
On the engine, I would remove the spark plugs, squirt a couple oz's of oil, or tranny fluid into each cylinder.Spin it over for 5-10 seconds.See if the OPG shows anything. Replace the plugs and fire it up.Don;t rev it. Just a fast idle for a couple minutes. Check for fluid leaks and noises. Good luck. Two trains of thought here. One is change the oil and filter B4 starting it. Two is run it first until hot, Then change the oil. My feeling is run it first until hot, then change. -
Them meat wagon rides are expensive, and sometimes quite painful.

Daily driver MJ....what do I need to fix
jimoshel replied to Disturbed's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When going to a car wash to do engine frame cleaning , try to find a truck wash. They have hotter water, steam sometimes and more pressure. Don't use it for a regular wash job. Or if you got old wiring. -
Kinda similiar experience. I was in Spain, driving a Renault Daupne, mispelled, From Zaragoza to San Sebastion when the heater hose broke. I had been sitting by the side of the road for about 10 minutes waiting for things to cool down when a Spanish motorcycle cop stopped. We talked for a couple minutes and I decided it was time to do something like remove the the end of the hose and reattach it to the heater. Fortunatly it had broke next to the heater and there was enough slack to do this. Without thinking I reached in my pocket , pulled out and opened my swithblade. That cop jumped 5 feet straight back and had his weapon drawn before I cud say 'oh sh*t'. I dropped the knive an held both hands out. We looked at each other a couple seconds, then he chuckled and secured his weapon. I picked up the knife and finished the job. Refilled the radiator with water from a stream. Then we went down the road a couple kilos and stopped at a cantina where we had a sandwich and couple cervezas. and a laugh or two.I bought. Jim

CA - MJ D44 & taillights - not mine
jimoshel replied to Gjeep's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Is just Ca expensive? Paid $90 bucks for a Dana 44 with 3.53's. They knocked $10 off the going price because both drums were missing. -
I hooked my winch up so it would push instead of pull. Now if I could just get it to work. Think I need a stiffer cable.

Didn't make it back to the JY Sat like I wanted. Sick horse. Went back this morn. Talked to the head guy. The truck was bought at a estate auction with a bad motor. Somebody had drained the engine oil, probably the PO. Who then died. The truck sat for 7 years, in the garage. Then the wife died. The grandkid fired the truck up and took off, not noticing the drain plug on the dash, or the pressure guage. Actually got 3 miles B4 it busted. Hauled it back to the house. Everything was sold at public auction and the JY got the truck, On my trip this AM I got the rear axle Dana 44, 3.53, both springs, shocks, Gabriel red hat, or something, the proportioning valve, Both drive shafts, and the front axle assy, Dana 30. Both springs, shocks, control arms, sway bar, Total expenditure, $210 and 5 hours of my time.Everything else that was anygood was gone or damaged. And so it goes. Jim And sorry, No pics.

I hit a 360 lb black bear with the J20.Other than a little bend in the grill , which was already bent, there was no damage. But then there wasn't any plastic in the front either. Tried 3 times to post a pic. Never happened. IMG

Any time some one changes the agreed upon price in the middle of a deal, Walk away from it. They are untrustworthy and and who knows what BS they been telling. If you know someone who's into old trucks and can have them look at for a second opinion go by their recommendation. Tha absolute worst way and/or time to buy something is when your emotion starts over riding your common sense.
