  1. Feedback carburetors and electronic advance dizzies are not junk when they work properly, but they surely are delicate. A simple vacuum leak can wreak havoc on engine management and if one does not have the proper diagnosis ability, components will "act" defective, they will get replaced only to have the anomaly still exist, then frustration builds and it all becomes a POS! To seasoned Technicians like some of us, the cause of the problems the OP's vehicle is having would already be pinpointed and most likely resolved...my point? Maybe it's time to locate a good Tech to help 86Kid at his locale...
  2. I too plan a V8 swap into my 'manche soon, but will for sure ditch the AX5 for a New Venture or SM420/465, whichever can be scored for a good deal, consider this...

  4. Can you elaborate on this please?
  5. Ground, always problematic ground...
  6. BTW, and totally off topic, I'm negotiating a position in Huntsville/RSA, you never know, we may soon be neighbors...
  7. Sweet lookin 'manche HOrn...
  8. Is that a brass coupler? If so, I'd replace it asap with a steel unit...
  9. +1 on avoiding the lift kits, took me a while to put mine together but in the end I got a great combo of parts for my 4.5ish inch lift, all I lack is improved steering components and the install will begin. I did go beyond the usual parts and got a Exploder 8.8 rear axle with matching 4.10 ratio for my 86er. I will be running 31" mudders on steelies but I prefer aluminum wheels anyday, I have some but tires are already mounted and balanced on the steelies so... I feel you about the heat in the NM desert, Las Cruces has customized the paint on my 'manche from maroon to a toasty rust hue on the roof and hood! Good luck.
  10. Leaks seem inevitable from the valve covers, at least that is the case with my POS 2.8L. Is there a fan clutch on the water pump? If so, it may have seen better days and causing the overheating issue, check it out. Say Green, the vacuum advance receives no impulses and does not fire, maybe you meant to say ignition module?
  11. Ensure that you're not losing fuel supply due to vapor lock cause by heat near fuel lines...
  12. Maybe a muffler change will alleviate noise issue?
  13. nice, NV3500 or 4500 it is, thanks for the help gents...
  14. So, I received a free, running 5.2L Magnum off a 2000 Ram pick up and it will be installed in my MJ in the near future. I am wondering what my options are for transmissions on this swap, I really want to keep it manual since I'm not a fan of slush boxes. Did AX15s get mated to these engines? If so, which vehicles? T.I.A.
  15. time to log your miles while in 4wd, once you log 500 you have reached break in.
  16. I gather the drag and center links from a 96 ZJ will work, ordering the below...
  17. Thanks Dzimm, looks like that's the info I need.
  18. In the near future, I will be lifting the MJ's suspension and while I'm at it I want to refresh the steering system. Sometime ago I read a write up somewhere stating that V8 ZJ parts are the way to go to beef up the MJ steering components, anyone have any leads to these details? :wavey:
  19. So I gather I need to leave the braking system fluid circuit untouched? That was my intention in the first place.
  20. I've done the 8.8 swap on my 85 XJ, I used the original proportioning valve, just removed a o-ring from it, since then people seem to say leave the o-ring alone and it works fine. Not sure what the wisdom on this is now, I did my swap in 2004. If your trying to keep some of the original MJ features (load sensing, leveling?) I'd leave the original proportioning valve as it is. But I'm no expert on it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro Yes, my goal is to maintain as much MJ features as possible... What O-ring do you speak of?

  22. Thank you all for the great info, I forgot to mention I'm swapping in an Explorer 8.8 with discs, I reckon I shall grab a WJ proportioning valve as well? What do y'all think?
