  1. Good idea! I just googled Warner 13-53 (WG = Warner Gear, aka Borg-Warner) and came up with hits that confirm T-5. Two ways to get to the same place. FWIW, that one would've been behind a 2.8V6 and is NOT a World Class T-5, and like the T-5's that came in CJ's in the early 80's don't like high torque applications. (The CJ version is considered marginal at best behind the 258 and not recommended for V8 swaps.)
  2. GM D44's with disc brakes are all internal locking hub style and Jeep trucks are the same. IH quit making pickups in 1975 (other than the Scout Based Terra, but that's 1/2T class). I'm not sure if IH went to disc brakes on their trucks before their demise or not, but they did use external hubs on 3/4T trucks. I don't think Dodge used external style hubs in the disc brake age... and looking at Warn's hub application chart, seems to agree with that. I thought Ford D44's with that style hub would all be closed knuckle, but Warn's chart shows a 9072 external hub application for '63-'77 HD 3/4T... so if it's an unmolested Ford axle, it'd have to be from the mid '70's to have disc brakes, open knuckles and external hubs.
  3. FWIW - my 86 XJ with 2.8/A904 came with 4,10's and I ran 34x9.50 TSL's without much problem... fuel economy suffered though. Later, I went to 33x12.50 TSL's (only 0.1" shorter) and swapped in 4.56's. It did better, but then the 2.8 isn't going to impress anyone with it's acceleration abilities. It's got a few more HP than the 2.5, but the 2.5 has more than that difference in TQ.
  4. JKS says it's 1" longer than stock and it fits SJ, XJ & MJ... then I'm guessing it's not any longer than a stock MJ shackle because they're about an inch longer than the XJ. I know cuz I scrounged a pair of MJ shackles for my XJ build years ago.

The steering wheel is the same (other than color) as the one in my 86 XJ Laredo. Shouldn't be hard to find one. No, I haven't taken any more recent pics of it. I guess I have a reason to now.
  6. The FC window van was a concept car built by Jeep back in the day. It was designed by Brooks Stevens, the guy who designed the Willys Jeepster/Wagon/Pickup, the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile and the Excaliber roadster. I don't think it has survived to today though.
  7. A friend of mine who is really into FSJ's and diesels married his two loves with a rare '83 J-10 stepside and a Nissan SD33T (like IH used in 1980 Scouts). http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/SuperDawg/Best-of-SuperDawg/ Personally, I thought he should have used something that wasn't so rare and left this J-10 alone... but then he and I don't always see eye to eye in the Jeep world. He picked up an ex-USAF CJ-10A tug - just because it was a diesel. It could have been an awesome trail monster and he turned into a commuter. He did convert it to 4WD, but swapped in FSJ 1/2T D44's with freeway flyer gears and street tires. http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/1986-CJ10A/johns-cj-10a.jpg
  8. That's because this one has Quadratrac... My son's first vehicle was a '78 J20 with a 401/T-18/Dana 20 and it had a centered D60.
  9. I bet the environmentalists would go into siezures if these were more popular! There's more varieties here and it sounds like the idea goes back to at least 1868.
  10. OOORAH!! Semper Fi! Where are you stationed in CA? Did a little time in the Corps myself, back in the last century - when Led Zeppelin was still releasing new albums... :laughin: Both of the bases I served at in CA are closed now. (MCAS El Toro & MCAS Tustin [aka MCAS(H) Santa Ana])
  11. Nice looking shop you have to work in! I believe Rymanrph is right. I've seen a 258 swapped into an early XJ before and they did was the core support. They might have had to massage the firewall a little with a hammer, but IIRC, there wasn't any major surgery involved.
  12. At first glance, I thought you said FC vans... then I realized that's not what you typed. When my wife was a rural mail carrier (for city dwellers - they drive their own vehicles), we went and looked at a couple of retired USPS FJ vans, but both of them were in rougher shape than we wanted to deal with. I never really thought of the FJ vans as being anywhere near as cool as the much rarer FC's. I did get a chuckle out of this FJ though...

Thanks! When I had the '92 Country, it was the same color and had a body colored grill - I almost swapped them before sending the XJ down the road, but ultimately left it as-is. The pics were taken back in 2005, I wish the paint was still that shiney, but the MJ lives outside and the trees haven't been so kind to it. :( After tearing the LH LCA mount off the "frame" of the XJ and seeing how it was made, I'm reluctant to get serious with another unit construction rig. (It also helped me understand how a 4 door XJ can weight several hundred pounds less than a soft top YJ.) In looking at the amount of steel many here have had to add to their trail rigs to make them hold up to the abuse reinforces that. That's not to say full-frame vehicles don't have issues (the family CJ has cracked the frame at every spring hanger at some point or another), but they seem to be easier to deal with. I'm not a welder, so I have to depend on others to make those kind of repairs. When I tore the control arm off my XJ, I was in Canada and I couldn't find anyone that was willing to weld a repair on my XJ - claiming the uni-frame was zinc plated and therefore put off hazarous fumes they didn't want to deal with. Fortunately for me, I was there with my club and was able to get it home on a trailer and their rig was driven back home. Once home, I didn't have any problems getting the XJ fixed - and even added the MJ LCA supports to it. (This all happened before anyone had done any long arm jobs on XJ's.) I bought the MJ back in 2005 because I needed a pickup from time to time and wanted something a little different. I found this one and it was a clean, well equipped example. The PO, who was a recently retired Jeep dealership mechanic, had built this one with choice parts. He also had a beautiful black Eliminator that was similarly equipped, but he wasn't willing to talk about selling that one. At the time when I bought it, my wife thought it was a lot of money ($3500, ~$1500 above the average MJ around here at the time) and feared I was going to thrash it like the XJ (which was pretty nice looking when I first got it). I promised her back then that I wouldn't beat this one up and so far, I've kept that promise. It's primary duty has just been being a pickup for those times when you need one. A couple of years ago, I picked up a Four Wheel Campers pop-up camper for it, so that gets slid in when we go camping.

I've been here a little over a week, so I thought maybe I should introduce myself... Hi, I'm Paul and I'm a Jeepaholic. I've been into Jeeps (and other 4x4's) since 1970 (age 13), when Dad came home with a M38A1 powered by a '57 'Vette 283. A couple of years later, the M38A1 was replaced by a '71 CJ5. Many weekends and vacations were spent out wheelin' the West from the Canadian border to Cabo San Lucas. Rigs I've owned in the past, listed in order of purchase include: '62 Willys Wagon with a 350 Buick '53 M38A1 (not the same one as Dad's - this one had a Chevy 350) '69 Toyota FJ-40 (stock) '71 CJ5 (bought from Dad when health issues ended his driving ability) '75 Chevy K-10 short/wide box on 38's '80 IH Scout II - a special edition called Hot Stuff, which is essentially a Scout II with a Terra cab and fancy trim (only 4 were made) '73 IH Scout II (for parts) '86 XJ Laredo '86 XJ Pioneer (for parts) '75 IH Scout II (bought for my daughter when she turned 16) '92 XJ Country Out of the rigs above, I still have the '71 CJ5 and both '86 XJ's, plus... ...the reason I'm here: '89 MJ that started life as a Pioneer. It currently sports a '92 HO head with '99 intake, Pacesetter header, bucket seats with XJ console (and center handbrake), AX-15, NP231 and XJ D44 rear that has had the spring perches moved to the right spot with pads for SOA or SUA (Currently SUA). Suspension wise, it's got ~2" spacers up front and air shocks out back (done by the PO). Plans for the MJ? Rob the '86 Laredo of it's front 6" lift, 4:56 gears & lockers and maybe the front bumper with the 8274 on it... but after seeing some of the clean "hidden" winch setups here with the smaller winches, maybe not. I don't plan on doing hard core wheelin' with it, but who knows. I've said that before and changed my mind. :D
  16. Now this is team spirit... LOL Looks like fun! In reading the comments, it looks like more Ford fans are upset than Denver fans. Some even wanted the spare tire carrier.
  17. How about exotic motorcycles? A Voxan 1000 Street Scrambler in the parking lot where I was working in France: Ducati 999R Xerox Edition: I have no idea what it is... LOL OK, so these two bikes aren't exotic, but the sidecars make them stand out from the crowd. Kawasaki ZX12R with sidecar Yamaha FJ1200 with sidecar

  19. You've done a lot of nice work there, but that rear driveshaft is out of phase by about 90 degrees. The yokes at each end of the tube should be in the same plane. The front one looks off a few degrees, but that could just be an illusion created by the picture (angle, lighting & depth of field, etc.).
  20. I've been a Discount Tire customer for at least a couple of decades. They've had a "beat any advertised price" policy for as long as I've been doing business with them. They beat magazine advertised prices for my first set of Super Swampers back in the days when that was the only tire Interco made and online tire sales were still someone's dream on their 386 computer... LOL
  21. Using a XJ sway bar may not be so easy. Their springs are over the rear axles (SOA) and the MJ is under (SUA), add in the fact the XJ's sway bar mounts to the plates on top of the spring packs and they spring themselves are farther apart (XJ springs mount outboard of the "frame", MJ's on the bottom of the frame), might make it a lot of work to adapt. The flip side is you can probably find a XJ sway bar for free since removing the rear sway bar is a popular mod on XJ's with trail aspirations. (I took both of them off my XJ and off to the recycler they went.) I understand where you're coming from though, my '89 MJ wallows quite a bit when I have my Four Wheel Pop-Up Camper installed. I'm guessing if your 86 hasn't had new shocks in the last few years or springs in the last decade, it's time to think about going that route. :)

Very cool concept. Looks pretty good in the pictures. Jeep could've had an answer to the International Scout Terra with something like this.
  23. A couple of things crack me up about this - besides what's been mentioned... 1. a 1966 J3000 Jeep Willys Gladiator? In 1966, the Willys name was long of the picture - it was the Kaiser Jeep Corporation. 2. "The truck has been restored as a period correct M715 style." Really? Other than being a Jeep truck, this thing has _NO_ M-715 style. It's a weak tip of the hat, at best. Early in my stint in the Marines, we still had a M-715's. I've seen them in several shades of military greens and even in gloss, but NEVER in that shade. I never saw a M-715 (or any other road capable military rig) that had POST SPEED LIMIT painted on it - especially the outside. But then, POST is an ARMY term, and my Army expereince is limited to a year in the Reserves in a Chinook outfit. (We did have maximum speed limits painted on the dash - inside - on some vehicles.) I'm also glad I was never stationed anywhere that had a 25 mph speed limit on the whole base! LOL Here's a nice looking '66 J truck that's for sale, a little spendy, but at least it has the right bed on it to make a better M-715 tribute: http://www.jeeptruck.com/mjs/sale/ads007/ads007.html
  24. Is marijuana legal in Quebec? He might be smokin' somethin' even stronger. What was MSRP on a MJ in 1987? I'm thinking he (or whoever originally bought it) probably didn't pay $9000.
  25. I just found this thread... http://comancheclub.com/topic/28164-anybody-know-this-mj/ Honest! But that's the sort of look I was thinking... might need to give a little more clearance on the fenders if you have much uptravel though.
