2.5L Tj Engine With Ax5 Fit My Mj? 242 Tcase Fit?
benjy_26 replied to mndiesel's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That's WAY too much to pay for a rebuilt engine. If you do the grunt work yourself and ask aroung your area for reasonably priced machine shops (and score a few deals on parts), a sub 1K rebuild is entirely do-able. Heck, I spent around that to get a 4.0 overbored, valve job'd, AND scored a hi-po cam. -
Ok, so, out of curiosity, what's the best year for AX5's? Is there a breakdown of changes out therr somewhere?
-
Indeed... or an 8.8 from a late 90's Explorer, or a 2wd Taco rear, or a D44. Heck, If I'm taking the time to cut and weld, I'm throwing another axle in.
-
Sorry, I hijacked my own thread. Is the AX 4 crossmember the same as thr AX 5's?
-
Interesting, ^^^ I never thought the C-member would be different. You know what happens when you assume! Y'all think the AX4 and AX5 crossmembers are different?

Mnkyboys 89 Comanche project
benjy_26 replied to mnkyboy's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Cool. Thanks for the info. I'll probably use some Spectre parts to fab an intake tube for this beastie. I've had good luck with their aluminum "fabrication" parts. Since I can't weld AL, I just use their flex couplers.- 798 replies

I think the actual clutch is too big to fit inside thr Dakota bellhousing.

Yup. Text book death wobble. Check your bushings

Then why bother swapping clusters? IMHO, a light that pops on is a better (more visible) backup than a duplicate gauge. Post a photo so we can see what you're talking about. Because I like my junk to look semi-original at first glance. I'll post a pic ASAP. What's more "semi-original" than an original factory instrument cluster? If you like your vehicles to look "semi-original," why install aftermarket gauges instead of factory equipment? Respectfully, you're not making any sense. No worries, I hardly make sense to anyone. As far as looking semi original, some of the gauges in my other cars are carves into the original clusters, or hidden in center consoles. They make sense to me ...

Awesome. I'm going to start measuring the pump and box off of my ZJ... it seems like it should fit.- 798 replies

I tend to install aftermarket gauges in EVERYTHING, so the stock clusters are mostly ancillary for me. I thoughgt the AMC logo on the bottom left of my stock cluster was an idiot light of sone sort. If it isn't, what is its purpose? Low fuel light? I thought so too... but I've run the MJ to empty once when calculating mileage and it didn't do anything.

No, you have to go with either the idiot light or full gauge cluster because one printed circuit foil can not support both (or p/o both) type clusters. Ah... forgot they were printed circuits.... Too bad they're not PTP wired. Then one could come up with some crazy combos.
-
The clusters are a direct swap. The speedo cable hook up is different on some years. Easier to swap the speedo head than the cable. Change the oil pressure sw and temp sw on the engine to gauge sending units. Pardon my ignorance, but how does one go about swapping the speedo head?

Hello all. I'm sure that this has been answered before, but I wasn't able to find specific info. I have an 87 SporTruck with the idiot light gauges, and I recently picked up a cluster from an 88 MJ at the junk yard. The difference between that cluster and mine is that the 88 has a different speedo cable (I think) and it has readouts for amps, oil pressure, and water temp. I'd like the keep the AMC logo'd idiot light (it looks cool :) ), but I would like the other read outs. My question is: Is it possible to only transfer SOME of the gauges off the 88 cluster onto my 87's cluster?

Water-Repellent Paints As Aid To Clean-Up?
benjy_26 replied to Incommando's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yup. I spray PAM on my undercarriage when wheeling in wet conditions. We don't get gumbo mud out in my corner of Texas, but caliche clay poses its own issues. -

Dude... KILLER BUILD!!!! I think that you keeping the 2.5 is awesome. BTW, do you have any pics of your P/S conversion? I'm about to start gathering parts for my own 87 4 banger with manual steering.- 798 replies

What Vehicles Have A Dana 44 Rear
benjy_26 replied to Alicia's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
OR... a 2WD rear end from a Taco. The width is similar, the aftermarket for Yota rear ends is limitless, it seems, they're light, stupid-strong, and have a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. I actually plan on throwing one under my Manche when the D35 gives up the ghost. -
OR... Jeepspeed brackets and a rebuild could be thrown in that thing. For some weird reason, Jeep (any jeep) running gear in my area seems to be selling as if it's covered in gold and gems. I'd probably take a gamble on a $55 axle, if it were local and I could pick it up.
-
Because off road (ab)use is hard on fiberglass.
-
I've seen a Ranger done with radius arms and a HP30. Seems like that could be done to a Dakota as well.

'86 Comanche Rear Axle Ratio 3.54 Or 3.55?
benjy_26 replied to tleed's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Personally, I'd get myself a 3.73 or 4.10 8.8 and re-gear the front. I meam, if you're regearing one axle anyway, might as well improve the situation all around. -
Ah... interesting. I'm going to have to start compiling a list if parts.
