  1. I replaced the heater hoses on both my XJ and MJ with 97+ models from the junkyard. Even if they were original, they are still newer than my originals. It's been over a year and no issues. Buying local makes it more convenient for warranty/returns, but I also suggest you check prices on Rockauto. If you are buying several things and can get them from the same shipping locations (to minimize shipping costs) you can get some pretty good deals. Sometimes you can add some items like wiper blades, air filter, and spark plugs and have little effect on total shipping cost to get an even better deal. Before I make a purchase (other than at the pick-n-pull) I usually cross reference prices on Rockauto, Amazon, and ebay.
  2. Found this on my Kentucky-Ohio-Illinois-Missouri junkyard tour back in July. Factory black transfer shifter, and a 242 bezel from a very early XJ, note it says "hi lock" and "lo lock" instead of "4 part time" and "4LO". Saving this for my 4x4 conversion, I have a burgundy interior, but with the factory black vinyl flooring. I've kicked around using a burgundy bezel, but think black will look better.
  3. Before I owned an MJ, I ran across an 86 in the pic-n-pull. It had the AMC20 axle (I know my axles), and really had me scratching my head, thinking it was a swap, but seeing it had the proper 5 on 5 1/4" bolt pattern. It also had metric ton springs, which could have been new, as they had no rust on them. I went home, did some research, and went back two weeks later. They'd crushed it. I still get mad when I think about it. It had the tailgate, and makes me wonder if it had the metric ton emblem. Like I said, I was new to MJs and didn't notice.
  4. Damn. Well he didn't get mine.
  5. Hadn't thought of that.
  6. That sounds like mine, lol. It didn't even have a radio.
  7. OK, thank you again. I've pulled two oem trans coolers to eventually use on my XJ and MJ, but never understood why some XJs had it and others didn't. Being a part of a towing package makes perfect sense.
  8. OK, thanks Don. Did the max cooling option add anything else, besides a two core radiator? I already had an electric fan, because I had AC, I suppose?
  9. I am replacing the entire AC system on my MJ (except evaporator). After I removed the condenser, I was surprised to see I have a single core radiator. It's the original. The tanks have the place for the second core, but it's not there. Mine is an original 4.0/auto/AC/2wd. Mopar part # 52004917. Is this common? I thought a 4.0 would have a 2 core. I have a spare rad out of a later XJ, found it in a junkyard, looked like it had been installed and never even filled up. It will be going in.
  10. This may be slightly off topic, but- I used to own a 1989 XJ Wagoneer, black w/woodgrain. I wish I'd kept it, but that's a different story. This was back when I was new to XJs. It started dying, I couldn't figure it out, so took it to the dealer. Of course it was the CPS. They replaced it quickly, wasn't to expensive, I'm feeling happy as I pick it up. Before I drove off, something told me to just take a look under the hood. Pop it up, and instantly notice my relay cover is missing. I went in and complained. There was a glass window behind the cashier's desk that looked into the shop. I watched the manager go over and start talking to the mechanic, couple hand gestures, then the mech goes over to the trash can, REACHES IN and pulls out my relay cover. This would have been about 1998, and was the last time I've taken a car to the dealer.
  11. Marion, IL is my hometown! I stayed at home in MO though. I expected a little darker also, but it was still cool.
  12. Maybe I missed it, but I don't see any mention of trucks equipped with cruise control. I've seen quite a few of the early XJs/MJs with cruise, and there is a short cable that attaches to the instrument cluster, that includes a speed sensor, and that short cable then attaches to the speedo cable. I could see if someone had an original speedo cable that was meant for cruise application, then bought a cluster, would have a hard time figuring out how it all went together because they were missing a piece. Not sure if that helps any in this case, but thought I would mention it.
  13. I think they use different connectors so you don't get them mixed up on the XJ. Try to clean the windshield and spray the back glass instead.
  14. Late 1991 up to 96 XJs have the reservoir on the pass side. I swapped one in to my 91 XJ, also in preparation for a dual diaphragm booster swap that is yet to happen (parts on the shelf, gathering dust). I did the late XJ inside-the fender-mount on my 91 MJ. I recommend the later one, although it is slightly more work. Much cleaner setup. I've experienced similar lackluster sprayer performance on my CJ. I've wondered if adding a relay to bring full voltage to the pump, similar to upgrading XJ/MJ headlight wiring, would make a difference.
  15. Cherry Picked Auto Parts in Toledo, OH, has a 1988 MJ in their lot that has a factory rear Dana 44. Truck is a short bed 5-speed, so perhaps swapped in. Also has one of those front axle lock kits, looked a lot like this one: https://www.extremeterrain.com/alloy-usa-differential-cable-yj-450920.html?utm_content=XT%20Driveline%20-%20Differentials%7CAlloy%20USA&utm_campaign=YJ%20-%20No%20Years&utm_source=google-pla&utm_medium=shopping&T5_Var3=yellow&T5_Var4=J11865&utm_term=%7Bkeyword%7D&XTID=J11865 The rear axle is very rusty.
  16. I recently posted this on Facebook with the title "If I won the lottery" haha. I was wondering if anyone has pictures of Comanches, new, lined up on the dealer lot.
  17. Can't see the rear cargo light in the pictures. If it has one and you are getting it, also get the dash switch panel for it, to the left (driver) side of the steering column. All early MJs were wired for the cargo light (plug and play), later were not, so wiring would need to be added.
  18. That column looks like it has a column mounted gear indicator. Was that a 1986 only thing??
  19. Someone already said it, but yes grab the tailgate handle! Or ask them to give you a deal on the tailgate since it is beat, and cut out the "JEEP" to hang in your garage. I would grab that mini console, the under dash courtesy lights, and the dash clock if it has one (probably since it's an XLS). Check to see if it has factory front tow hooks, although the brackets may be bent based the how the front bumper looks. Also, I bet it has rear speaker brackets in it.
  20. Converting a non tilt/column shift to a tilt, using a tilt/non column shift for parts? I don't think that's even possible, but hey... never seriously looked at it. Let us know how it goes. I once found a tilt/column shift column in a junkyard, but didn't have the tools to pull it. Who goes to the junkyard while on vacation? This guy.
  21. SEM is a brand that makes paint for plastic. Find a local supplier (the bigger O'Reillys have them around here), take your part in and compare to the caps on the spray can to see if you can find a close match. The counter guy I talked with had a chart in his book that we started out with. You might be able to find one online.
  22. I will soon be doing the AC on both my 91 XJ and 91 MJ, I also plan to use a 96 model compressor, and corresponding lines. I wasn't aware that the pressure sensors were different...
  23. So I plan to replace most all of the A/C system in my Comanche (and Cherokee, and Silverado). That includes the lines, compressor, condenser, receiver dryer, everything but the evaporator. A/C work is new to me, and I've down a lot of research, including reading stuff in this forum. It makes sense to me to flush the only part I am retaining. I am going to buy one of those kits that hooks up to shop air. My question is the flush itself. I've seen varying prices. Does anyone know if one is better than the other? Can I just use lacquer thinner? I saw that mentioned in another thread. Thanks for any advice. My entire life, I've never personally owned a vehicle with working AC. Looking forward to having three this summer.
  24. This is the best way to go, IMHO. Also, are you looking for a flat, 4-wire connector, or a round, 7-wire connector? This is the route I went, and it got me to wondering if the connector in question is used on any other vehicles. Perhaps Dakotas of the same year? I haven't checked yet, but it would be nice if we could confirm a more easily available source than junked Comanches. I've got pictures of the male/female connectors somewhere on my computer...
